Background / History

Tang Long first met Yue Wanyan at the Path to Immortality approximately 20,000 years before the present. Attracted to her, he offered to help her ascend, but his ghost cultivation immediately alarmed her. He persuaded her to accept his assistance by presenting a genuine Moon God Palace Sect Leader’s token and claiming friendship with its palace master. Privately, he also wanted revenge for the palace master’s earlier hostility toward him 228 229 230.

During their travels together, Tang Long and Yue Wanyan accidentally entered Nüba’s tomb and awakened her. Tang Long fought Nüba for ten days and nights without either winning. Exhausted, they settled their dispute when he offered to find her a suitable cultivation burial site. Their subsequent journey led to Nüba becoming his sworn elder sister 260.

His relationship with Yue Wanyan brought conflict with the Moon God Palace. He remembers deceiving her, her imprisonment by the palace, and her eventual succession as palace master, after which she issued a warrant for him. Although they ultimately became parents, the palace’s pressure separated them again, and Yue Wanyan returned to the Immortal Realm as a Divine Maiden 230.

Tang Long later explained that Yue Wanyan had placed Tang Xiaoling’s soul within the World Origin to nurture it. This triggered a phenomenon connecting her world to evil-spirit worlds and creating an Instance. Xiaoling was repeatedly selected while still very young, but Tang Long prevented her participation until circumstances forced him to allow it. He suspected her maternal clan of manipulating events and vowed to seek justice for Yue Wanyan, whom he believed the clan treated as a power source rather than an empress 145.

Personality

Tang Long is openly doting toward Xiaoling. He brings her food and toys, reassures her with child-friendly explanations, and delights in watching her adventures. His protectiveness can become ruthless: he arranges events across the Myriad Worlds for her sake and refuses to compromise when opponents deliberately endanger her 55 152 223 280 351.

His affection does not always mean constant companionship. Xiaoling spends considerable time alone, and Tiantian regrets following his instruction to conceal her human form. Tang Long also gradually accepts that his daughter needs experience outside his protection, sometimes ordering his subordinates not to intervene so that she can solve problems herself 170 291 292.

He is flirtatious, quick-witted, and willing to deceive. He charms the Nine Heavens Goddess with practiced replies, initially approaches Yue Wanyan partly to spite the Moon God Palace, and boasts that she fell for him at first sight—an account Nüba later recognizes as misleading. Despite his confidence before enemies, he avoids Houtu’s displeasure and flees when the Nine Heavens Goddess demands answers about his other women 78 144 145 229 260.
