  • Reported scale: Lin Lang states that the Jinyiwei has fourteen Thousand-household Offices, each overseeing ten Hundred-household Offices. He uses these figures to persuade Liu Zhengfeng that the organization can protect his family 23.
  • Promotion routes: Documented appointments reward arena victory, valuable intelligence, and successful arrests. Superior officers also attempt to sell recommendations or influence appointments through bribes 4 15 16 44.

Martial Strength

The Jinyiwei’s official reach is greater than its supply of elite fighters. Liu Zhengfeng discovers that Lin Lang’s recruitment pitch greatly overstated the strength of the local offices 23 36.

Personnel / Group Documented Strength
Ordinary Hundred-households Generally first-rate martial artists, rather than Martial Arts Masters comparable to Lin Lang 23
Thousand-household Liu Mid-stage Martial Arts Master; doubts whether he could control powerful sect elders recruited into the organization 20
Pingyang Thousand-household Office Liu Zhengfeng finds only two Martial Arts Masters there, neither particularly outstanding 36
Lower-ranking guards encountered by a captured thief Below third-rate; the prisoner believes she could kill them even while bound unless her martial arts are disabled 40
Liu Zhengfeng Peak Martial Arts Master with accomplished swordsmanship, initially employed as a Small Banner 23 36
Lin Lang An exceptional officer who reaches early Martial Arts Grandmaster while serving as Deputy Thousand-household 31 37

Background / History

Foreign Intelligence Assignment

The Eastern Depot has taken over much of the Jinyiwei’s former authority, while its Commander obeys Cao Zhengchun. Cao uses the organization to challenge Zhu Wushi’s influence over martial-world affairs. Rather than compete directly with the Dragon Guard Manor’s twenty-year intelligence network in Great Ming, he sends Jinyiwei personnel to investigate Great Song, Great Liao, Mongol Yuan, Western Xia, and Tubo 9.

Every Hundred-household Office under Lin Lang’s Thousand-household Office must supply personnel for the Great Song assignment. Lin Lang accepts the mission after refusing Hundred-household Li’s attempts to extract money from him. His report identifying Southern Beggars’ Gang leader Qiao Feng as Khitan earns Cao’s approval and an order promoting him to Hundred-household 8 9 15.

Recruitment and Sect Manipulation

After taking charge of Bailing County, Lin Lang proposes recruiting retired elders from prestigious martial sects. He argues that their experience and strength make them more useful than ordinary disciples, while their families, property, and possible legal violations provide leverage for recruitment 17 20.

His first successful recruit is Hengshan elder Liu Zhengfeng, who accepts a Small Banner appointment in exchange for protection from Mount Song. Lin Lang publicly uses his Jinyiwei token to drive away Mount Song’s representatives, then fights alongside Liu Zhengfeng against six ambushing Guardians. All six die, and Lin Lang reports that he has blamed the Sun Moon Demon Cult to provoke conflict between the factions 23 24 25 27.

Lin Lang subsequently proposes supporting a major sect as a government-controlled intermediary: it would absorb obedient factions and destroy those refusing to submit. Cao welcomes the alternative of destroying both the Five Mountains Sword Alliance and Sun Moon Demon Cult if neither accepts government backing 27 28.

Control of Pingyang and the Arrest Campaign

Lin Lang severely injures Thousand-household Zhao in a sparring match and announces that he will oversee the Pingyang office during Zhao’s recovery. He sends its personnel to collect intelligence and evidence against martial sects, while assigning Liu Zhengfeng to capture wanted criminals 35 36.

The office arrests dozens of fugitives, including martial experts who have evaded capture for ten or twenty years. The Eastern Depot formally authorizes Lin Lang’s temporary leadership, promotes Liu Zhengfeng to Hundred-household, and raises Wang Wu and Jia Liu to Probationary Hundred-household. Cao praises the campaign before the emperor and defends Lin Lang against Zhu Wushi’s accusations 44 45.

Preparations Against the Five Mountains Sects

Cao supports Lin Lang’s proposed action against Northern Mount Heng, Southern Hengshan, and Eastern Mount Tai. He orders evidence prepared, communications blocked, and local authorities instructed to cooperate. Lin Lang sends Wang Wu and fifty men to Hengshan City under the stated purpose of upholding justice for the common people 48.

Abilities & Operations

Intelligence and Infiltration

Infiltration and intelligence gathering are described as basic Jinyiwei skills; spying and transmitting information are established organizational strengths 18 38.

  • Foreign assignments track prominent sects, identify exploitable conflicts, and encourage the establishment of deep-cover agents who can report regularly 9.
  • Under Lin Lang, agents monitor the Five Mountains Sword Alliance, Sun Moon Demon Cult, and Northern Shaolin, with daily reports required 38.
  • Wang Wu and an accomplice plant tavern rumors to intensify factional suspicion and encourage rival leaders to enter the struggle 38.
  • Early foreign reports disappoint Cao because they contain gossip rather than strategically useful intelligence 15.

Arrests, Detention, and Interrogation

Jinyiwei officers conduct raids, detain fugitives, and use the threat of imprisonment to compel cooperation 8 41 42.

  • Lin Lang’s men raid the Silver Hook Gambling House and take wanted murderer Li Fei into custody after Lin Lang defeats him 41.
  • The gambling-house manager fears being subjected to the “ten great tortures” if detained 42.
  • Lin Lang uses threatened arrest and claims of stolen silver to extort money from the establishment 41 42.
  • A summoned squad expertly burns and disperses the bodies of Zhu Wushi’s four agents; previously interrogated criminals have been disposed of in the same manner 45.
  • The organization’s authority is identified with Great Ming. Yu Canghai challenges Lin Lang’s right to arrest him in Great Song, after which Lin Lang kills him instead and later attributes the killing to Duan Yu 33 34.

Recruitment and Protection

Lin Lang presents imperial protection as an alternative for martial experts threatened by their former associates 23.

  • Recruits are expected to have clean backgrounds and retire formally from the martial world before joining 23.
  • Liu Zhengfeng completes his Golden Basin Handwashing Ceremony before Lin Lang publicly asserts his protected status 24.
  • Recruitment can involve coercive leverage over families, property, or violations of the Great Ming Code 20.
  • Official affiliation carries a social cost: other martial artists leave Liu Zhengfeng’s ceremony rather than remain to drink with a new Jinyiwei member 24.

Equipment / Resources

  • Xiuchun Blades — Carried by Lin Lang and Hundred-household Li 3 18.
  • Rank tokens — Waist tokens identify official appointments; Lin Lang displays his Hundred-household token and supplies Liu Zhengfeng with a Small Banner token 23 24.
  • Martial repository — Provides martial arts through rank and service rewards, but contains relatively few powerful techniques. Lin Lang considers exchanging the acquired Pine Wind Sword Technique for another art 1 17 33.
  • Prisons — The threat of Jinyiwei detention is sufficient to frighten both Madam Li and the Silver Hook Gambling House manager into paying 8 42.
  • Eastern Depot support — Includes promotions, authorization of local command, prepared evidence, and orders compelling local officials to cooperate 15 44 48.

Notable Personnel

  • Lin Lang — Rises from Chief Banner Officer to Deputy Thousand-household; leads the recruitment strategy, sect-manipulation scheme, and Pingyang arrest campaign 1 17 27 31 44.
  • Thousand-household Liu — Lin Lang’s initial prefectural superior; approves recruitment of sect elders and brings Lin Lang to the capital to present his larger strategy 17 20 27.
  • Thousand-household Zhao — Claims exceptional movement skills but is severely injured by Lin Lang and displaced from active command during recovery 35 36 44.
  • Liu Zhengfeng — Recruited Hengshan elder; advances from Small Banner to Bailing County Hundred-household while remaining under Lin Lang’s command 23 44.
  • Wang Wu and Jia Liu — Loyal followers whose lives Lin Lang previously saved; become Chief Banner Officers and later Probationary Hundred-households 4 17 44.
  • Hundred-household Li — Former Bailing County head; takes bribes, attempts to charge Lin Lang for a promotion recommendation, and is reassigned after Lin Lang replaces him 4 16 17.
  • Liu Wu — Chief Banner Officer who sabotages Lin Lang before their promotion contest; loses the bout and is later found murdered 1 5 8.

External Relationships

  • Eastern Depot / Cao Zhengchun — Controlling authority and political patron. Cao directs intelligence assignments, rewards useful service, and protects Lin Lang before the emperor 9 15 45.
  • Dragon Guard Manor / Zhu Wushi — Rival power with a better-established domestic intelligence network. Zhu Wushi attempts to recruit Lin Lang and criticizes his conduct at court 9 44 45.
  • Mount Song Sect — Opponent during Liu Zhengfeng’s recruitment; its Guardians challenge Jinyiwei protection and later ambush Lin Lang and Liu Zhengfeng 24 25.
  • Sun Moon Demon Cult — A target of surveillance and manipulation, but also Lin Lang’s intended foundation for controlling Great Ming’s martial world 27 38.
  • Golden Coin Gang — Avoids direct retaliation over Li Fei’s death because killing Cao-backed Jinyiwei officer Lin Lang could attract government attention and disrupt its expansion 43.

Internal Culture

  • Advancement and wealth: Officers risk their lives for promotion and money. Lin Lang increases payments to secure support when available official posts are too limited to reward everyone 39.
  • Shifting loyalties: Most of Lin Lang’s followers abandon him when they believe his martial arts are ruined; Wang Wu and Jia Liu remain loyal because he saved their lives 3 4.
  • Bribery and favoritism: Liu Wu pays Li three thousand taels to arrange the promotion bout, while Li later demands twenty thousand taels for recommending Lin Lang 4 16.
  • Celebratory banquets: Successful missions, arrests, and promotions are marked by drinking, feasting, and visits to entertainment establishments 1 6 44.
