Background / History
Before becoming the sect master’s wife, Luo Ning was known as the Moon Palace Goddess and sought martial experts to help avenge her family. She visited the Watercloud Sword Pool but learned no swordsmanship there. The Zhou Family nevertheless forged the Weeping Water Sword for her, creating a debt of gratitude she continued to acknowledge after joining the Sky-Pacifying Sect 36.
Luo Ning and the Sky-Pacifying Sect Master became partners early in their martial-world careers. The sect master sought to restore the previous dynasty but concealed her sex because her followers might resist serving a female ruler. Luo Ning agreed to pose as her wife and handle internal affairs in exchange for being taught everything once the sect master attained martial arts bordering on the divine 30.
Their apparent marriage earned widespread admiration, but life on Southern Skies Mountain became monotonous for Luo Ning. Her training failed to close the growing gap between their abilities, while administrative duties displaced her former reputation as “the martial world’s greatest beauty” 30. Joining the sect also estranged her from an unnamed friend who had once been as close as a sister 21.
Appearance
Luo Ning is repeatedly described as an ethereal beauty whose appearance remains striking even without makeup 13 23.
- Hair: Long, ink-black hair, described as cascading like rippling water 13 16.
- Eyes and brows: Peach-blossom eyes and willow-leaf brows 11 39.
- Build: A slender waist and curvaceous figure 16.
- Clothing: Wears an ankle-length green dress and shoes embroidered with bamboo leaves during her stay at Ye Jingtang’s home 16.
- Accessories: Uses a jade hairpin; wears a veiled hat when joining her sect’s departing party 39 41.
Personality
Luo Ning values promises, repayment of favors, and martial-world etiquette. Although reluctant to reward Ye Jingtang after their embarrassing encounter, she honors her agreement to teach him. She also remembers the Zhou Family’s assistance and treats attending Old Master Zhou’s birthday as an obligation 10 17 36.
Her aloof, ladylike bearing conceals a quick temper, especially when Ye Jingtang teases her or violates her boundaries. She frequently draws her sword in response, yet puts lives and shared objectives ahead of personal resentment: she saves him from a concealed weapon and worries that treating her wound may have poisoned him 16 23 25 28.
She is conscious of reputation and political consequences. Her feelings for Ye Jingtang trouble her because the martial world considers her married, and a scandal could damage both her name and the sect master’s standing. She also fears that his court service might eventually place them on opposing sides 21 30.
Abilities & Skills
Cloud-Adhering / Cloud-Touching Fourteen Hands
A top-tier internal martial art obtained from Jade Void Mountain and created by Perfected Person Xuanji, ranked sixth in the world. Luo Ning considers it one of her ultimate trump cards 29.
- Emphasizes soft force; its first form can damage internal organs without injuring the skin 10.
- Uses deliberate movements to teach precise qi circulation rather than a fixed combat routine 10.
- Normally requires about three years to grasp the basics. Ye Jingtang’s success in three attempts astonishes her 11.
- She initially teaches only the opening form and later offers further instruction in exchange for securing Qiu Tianhe’s freedom 10 37.
Peacock-Opening Sword
Luo Ning uses her flexible sword in sweeping, fan-shaped attacks resembling a peacock’s spread tail 25 26.
- Cuts down incoming silver needles and creates a tightly guarded space in front of her 25.
- Allows airborne attacks against a fleeing opponent, as demonstrated against Guo Yuanlong 26.
- Does not make her immune to concealed weapons: an undetected black needle wounds her shoulder during the ambush 25.
Lightness Skills
Luo Ning teaches Ye Jingtang how to alter bodily lightness through qi circulation, while acknowledging that her own lightness skills are not particularly advanced 29.
- Raising qi makes the body light and permits quiet movement 29.
- Sinking qi produces the heavy-body technique known as the Thousand-Pound Drop 29.
- Attempting both methods without sufficient control can disrupt qi 29.
- Her instruction provides a foundation for studying Lu Jieyun’s more advanced insights 29.
Acupoint Sealing and Internal Control
- Seals a qi point near her wounded shoulder immediately after being struck by a poisoned needle 25.
- Temporarily immobilizes Ye Jingtang with a finger strike to his chest, numbing his limbs 39.
- Initially believes she can expel the needle’s poison herself, but later discovers that she cannot draw it from the shoulder wound unaided 27 28.
Martial Knowledge and Awareness
- Escapes White Impermanence’s pursuit despite being poisoned during her investigation of the Black Bureau 10.
- Possesses exceptionally keen senses, noticing Ye Jingtang’s attention while her back is turned 16.
- Recognizes the Dragon-Mingling Diagram and understands that it cannot be copied or readily taught through ordinary explanation 27 29.
- Distinguishes a collection of advanced martial insights from a beginner’s training manual 29.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Weeping Water Sword — A famed flexible sword forged for her by the Zhou Family of the Watercloud Sword Pool. She carries it at her waist 23 36.
- Personal medicine — Already possesses medicine while injured and refuses Ye Jingtang’s offer to exchange Jade Dragon Balm for further instruction 16.
- Dragon Pool Tourmaline — Given to her by Ye Jingtang as her share of the proceeds from capturing Wingless Owl 33.
Relationships
- Ye Jingtang — Rescuer, temporary housemate, martial pupil, and developing romantic attachment. Their cooperation is repeatedly strained by his teasing and unwanted physical advances, including taking her first kiss. She later reveals that her marriage is only a partnership and objects to the possibility of his becoming Prince Jing’s consort 10 17 29 38.
- Sky-Pacifying Sect Master — Female partner and nominal spouse. Luo Ning conceals her identity, manages sect affairs, and receives martial instruction from her 27 30.
- Zhe Yunli — The sect master’s disciple, who addresses Luo Ning as “Master’s wife.” Luo Ning cares for her, disciplines her teasing, and refuses to leave her behind with Ye Jingtang 11 17 36.
- Qiu Tianhe — The imprisoned martial-world friend she comes to the capital to rescue; also Zhe Yunli’s blade instructor 10 11 12.
- Zhou Family — Benefactors who forged her sword. Their assistance obliges her to attend Old Master Zhou’s birthday banquet 36.
- Zhang Henggu — Sect guardian who arranges her departure and accompanies her party out of the capital 36 41.
- Pei Xiangjun — Ye Jingtang’s employer, who warmly welcomes Luo Ning after unexpectedly encountering them together. Luo Ning asks Ye Jingtang not to let Pei suspect her identity 41.
- Niao Niao — Ye Jingtang’s bird companion. Luo Ning feeds and holds the bird, although she also scolds it after discovering her badly oversalted cooking 33 37.
