Warlock!

Had one finally appeared?

In the Dark Age, there were many supernatural professions.

Broadly speaking, they could be divided into two systems: the Warlock system and everything else.

Warlock was the most powerful profession in the entire Dark Age, and the one the original owner of his body had dreamed of joining.

Xu Le looked at the man, who wore a loose gray robe and a round-brimmed hat.

He looked to be in his thirties, with black-framed glasses resting on a high nose bridge.

He had a square face. Though his looks were fairly ordinary, he gave people a favorable impression at first glance.

"Tell me what happened."

The Warlock's voice was exceptionally clear, without the slightest slurring.

That clear voice reminded Xu Le of an actor from his previous life renowned for his delivery of dialogue.

At the gray-robed Warlock's question, the guard answered without delay:

"Sir Warlock, when we put the Psyche Worm on this man, it shriveled up and looked half-dead. There must be something wrong with this kid. He stayed out overnight. He might even have been contaminated by Guyinduo."

Xu Le felt he ought to defend himself at this point.

"Hey, hey, Mr. Guard. I've never done anything to you. Throwing accusations at me isn't right."

The guard wanted to say more, but the middle-aged Warlock raised his hand, stopping their argument.

"Wasting time on something so pointless is poor conduct. Mr. Guard, may I take a look at the Psyche Worm?"

"Of course, sir."

The guard handed the worm to the Warlock, who picked it up and gave it a casual glance.

"There's nothing wrong with the Psyche Worm."

Then he looked at Xu Le.

"Come here."

"All right."

Xu Le didn't dare be stubborn at a time like this. He obediently walked up to the Warlock and let him do as he pleased.

The man placed the Psyche Worm on Xu Le again, this time on his chest rather than his back.

Noticing the gunshot wound, the Warlock shifted it slightly aside before pressing it down.

Sizzle!

Xu Le thought he heard the worm wailing, and the cool sensation was even stronger than before.

Before their eyes, the Psyche Worm died at a visibly rapid pace.

Xu Le's eyebrows, meanwhile, lifted slightly.

It felt as though that particular sensation had reached its climax.

He hadn't been sure before, but now he knew exactly what that sensation was.

The Guyinduo Soul Tree!

Seeing this, the guard hurriedly pointed at Xu Le.

"Sir Warlock, that's exactly what happened! Exactly that! There's something wrong with him. There definitely is!"

The guard was delighted now. In truth, he didn't care whether there was anything wrong with Xu Le.

What he cared about was whether he himself was at fault.

As long as he hadn't made a mistake, he couldn't care less whether Xu Le lived or died. He just needed to pin all the blame on him.

The gray-robed Warlock, however, said little. Looking at the Psyche Worm, which had already turned to ash, he raised his eyebrows.

"Interesting. Interesting."

Xu Le watched the Warlock, his heart fluttering with unease. What's interesting? Just say it!

I can't stand people who talk in riddles.

"Sir Warlock, did I do something wrong?"

The Warlock shook his head and placed a hand on Xu Le's shoulder.

"Don't be nervous, young man. I mean you no harm. Tell me, what happened to you yesterday?"

Xu Le hesitated briefly before speaking.

"Last night, we encountered Oddities!"

"We? Who was with you?"

"Old Zhou and me."

"Tell me in detail what happened last night. There's no need to rush. Take your time."

The Warlock's expression was perfectly calm, as though nothing could make him nervous.

His words brought Xu Le an inexplicable sense of reassurance.

"It all started with the first Living Corpse we encountered last night..."

As an unsuccessful novelist, Xu Le did at least know how to tell a story.

He gave a vivid account of the previous night's events-an edited version, of course.

Still, most of what he said was true.

The only lie was that he made Old Zhou the one who had killed the Living Corpses.

"Old Zhou sacrificed himself to save me. It was all because I was too weak. Before he died, he asked me to take good care of his wife and daughter. I'll make sure I do."

At this point, Xu Le clenched his fists tightly, his eyes seemingly filled with immense determination.

The Warlock narrowed his eyes slightly, leaving Xu Le feeling a little dazed.

He didn't know how good his acting was, but he kept getting the same feeling.

The Warlock before him seemed to have seen through his thoughts.

"Are you very sad about Old Zhou's death?"

"Yes. Old Zhou was my friend despite our age difference. He treated me well and helped me with a lot of things."

While the two talked, a guard beside them had already brought out some records concerning Old Zhou and Xu Le.

It had to be said that Lighthouse's night watchman system maintained a remarkably strong grip on the city.

Although the records were incomplete, they contained basic outlines of Xu Le's and Zhou Ke's lives.

After looking through the records, the Warlock's gaze finally settled on Xu Le.

Xu Le couldn't tell what the man was thinking from his eyes. All he could do was wait.

The air seemed to freeze at that moment.

Suddenly, a meow broke the silence, and everyone looked toward its source.

A black cat was walking along the wall, apparently pawing through leftovers the guards had thrown away.

"What rotten luck." One guard turned his head away.

The other guards felt much the same.

Black was an unwelcome color in this era. Night watchmen only wore it to blend into the darkness.

Creatures such as black cats were generally considered ill omens in Lighthouse.

It was only natural that people would abandon them, leaving them to become strays.

One of the guards even tried to draw his gun to shoot the cat, but the Warlock stopped him.

"Enough. Do one good deed each day, avert one calamity each month. The Black Tide comes tomorrow night. Since you're on guard duty here, you'd do well to shed less blood."

Hearing the Warlock's words, the guard lowered his head in slight shame.

The others stayed silent as well, not daring to speak.

Do one good deed each day, avert one calamity each month?

Xu Le was curious about that saying. It sounded like something a feng shui practitioner or fortune-teller would say.

Was that sort of thing popular in this world too?

By then, the Warlock had turned back toward Xu Le.

"All right, Xu Le. You've passed your Psyche Test."

Hearing this, Xu Le was pleasantly surprised.

The whole process had been much simpler than he had expected.

"That's all it takes?"

"Yes. Although your Heart Energy state is quite unusual, it still falls within the range of a normal person. You have all the emotions a normal person possesses; they've simply been masked by some kind of power. This may be an innate ability, so there's no need to be too surprised. Deep Blue produces many gifted young people every year. Xu Le, I think you might be one of them."

The Warlock suddenly said so much to him that Xu Le felt a little overwhelmed by the attention.

He was also sincerely grateful to this Warlock.

"Thank you very much, sir. Can I go now?"

The Warlock suddenly smiled.

"There's no need to thank me. I'm only doing my duty. As for leaving, heh, all I can say is that you're getting ahead of yourself. Besides the Heart Energy examination, you still have many other tests to undergo. The Heart Energy test is just one very simple part."

The corners of Xu Le's mouth began to twitch.

"The simplest part?"

"Yes, the simplest part. Oh, right, my name is Gan. I'm a Medium."
