Background / History

Original Owner and Transmigration

Before Xu Le's arrival, his body's original owner was a Zion student studying at Lighthouse University. He completed the required credits in two years, obtained a Warlock advancement manual, and began gathering resources outside the city with retired soldier Zhou Ke. Their partnership developed after Zhou Ke discovered him researching matters forbidden to Warlocks 16 42.

The original Xu Le betrayed Zhou Ke over a Guyinduo Fruit, stabbing him and refusing to promise safety for his wife and daughter. He swallowed the fruit, but his attempt to shoot Zhou Ke failed because he had not readied the firearm correctly. Zhou Ke disarmed him and shot him in the chest 5.

The current Xu Le awakened in the wounded body beside Zhou Ke's corpse. Memories obtained through Zhou Ke's medal later confirmed that he had transmigrated. He distinguishes himself morally from the original owner but recognizes that he must live with the consequences attached to Xu Le's identity 1 5 6.

Surviving the Wilderness

Xu Le discovered that darkness could produce Oddities and used a fire to stabilize the cabin. When Zhou Ke's body became a Living Corpse, he restrained its arm with a dagger and killed it with a close-range headshot. A subsequent ghostly threat resisted gunfire, forcing him to seek Golden Toad's help; he accepted the toad as his shikigami and secured protection until dawn 1 2 3 5.

The Night Watchers initially treated him as a possible contamination risk. He earned a hearing by identifying a hidden Guyinduo fragment on Wang Shu's leg, then used Lighthouse law and coherent reasoning to demonstrate his humanity. Despite an alarming reaction from the screening Psyche Worm, Gan judged his emotions to be normal but concealed by an unusual power. Xu Le passed the remaining examinations 9 12 13 14.

Zhou Ke's Last Wish

Xu Le visited Zhou Ke's widow and daughter, presenting himself as a representative handling compensation. The company, insurance, and procedures he described were invented, but he intended to make the promises real: relocation within thirty working days and payment of 8,125 yuan within forty-five working days 16 17.

His sincerity unlocked the Veteran's Soul before he had delivered either promise. He reaffirmed his commitment to the family and pursued becoming a Warlock as the best way to obtain the necessary resources 17 18.

Red Moon Calamity

At Lighthouse University, Xu Le rescued Wang Man by defeating a Living Corpse with a sword and phosphorus fire. During the subsequent classroom crisis, he identified contaminated students, shot several, and compelled other survivors to execute those he marked before they could mutate. He then asked Wang Man to sing to reduce the survivors' dangerous emotional buildup 22 28 29.

After Zhang Zhe's fatal contamination, Xu Le accepted responsibility for his last wish. With Wang Shu protecting him, he completed the remaining Medium advancement requirements and summoned White Cicada rather than an ordinary spirit beast. A later Night Watcher recollection credits him with turning the tide and killing Black Cicada 30 31 48.

Mother Tree Realm and Night Watchers

After the calamity, Xu Le entered the Gundo Mother Tree Realm and received the designation Number Seven. He selected an Ice Element Fruit and helped Chi Xiao identify the rewards offered to her, gaining instruction about talent fruits and the capacity of Guyinduo Fate users to consume additional fruits. He chose to keep his Ice Fruit rather than immediately eat it 35 36 38 39 40.

Xu Le withdrew Zhang Zhe's 1,150-yuan estate, retained 50 yuan, and set aside 1,100 yuan for the school, unlocking the teacher's twin-bladed sword. He subsequently delivered the estate and documents to the school's welfare director 40 41.

He accepted Bai Jing's offer of clerical employment with Team 6 and began studying under Gan. His successful removal of Li Shunliu's fear pollution led his colleagues to seek more active help from him. Xu Le resisted immediate assignments, citing his contract and his incomplete Warlock training, though he recognized that Lighthouse's worsening situation limited how long he could delay 43 46 48 49 50.

Xu Le considers his new face handsome, though his body is initially rather scrawny 8 16.

His experience as an unsuccessful novelist helps him improvise explanations, negotiate with stronger beings, and recognize other people's perspectives. He prefers preparation and reasonably safe sources of power to gambling with his life 2 5 13 31 37.

His apparent fearlessness is partly supernatural: the Soul Tree absorbs his nervousness and fear, returning calm and mental clarity. He knows that observers often mistake this effect for extraordinary personal courage 25.

He can become brutally decisive when hesitation threatens everyone's survival. During the classroom crisis, he deliberately adopts a murderous demeanor to enforce cooperation and accepts damage to his reputation. Nevertheless, he keeps commitments to the dead, protects Wang Man, and attempts to save Li Shunliu despite lacking a proven treatment method 17 28 29 34 48.

At work, Xu Le is friendly to staff regardless of rank, while remaining protective of his own time and safety. His reluctance to undertake dangerous duties reflects his awareness that his potential exceeds his current training 42 44 49 50.
