Background / History

Exile to the Flowing Sand River

Sha Wujing was originally the Curtain-Rolling General in Heaven. The Jade Emperor banished him to the Flowing Sand River for an unspecified offense. Every seven days, he was bound to a pillar beneath the river while flying swords pierced his chest and sides more than a hundred times 25 29 32.

Unable to endure hunger and cold, he emerged every two or three days to eat people. His attacks on woodcutters and fishermen eventually left both banks uninhabited. Among his victims were passing pilgrims; nine of their skulls floated in water that otherwise could not support even a goose feather. Believing them to be treasures, he strung them together and wore them around his neck 24 25 32.

Guanyin Bodhisattva guided him toward repentance and instructed him to wait for the scripture-seeking Pilgrim, whom he was destined to protect 24 32.

Ao Tu’s False Decree

Before Tang Sanzang arrived, Sha Wujing fought Tiger Vanguard and drove him away. Ao Tu then subdued him with his treasured fan’s fire, healed him, and claimed that he and Tiger Vanguard were Dragon and Tiger Generals serving Venerable Ananda 24.

Ao Tu presented a false decree ordering Sha Wujing to add a tribulation to the pilgrimage before becoming Tang Sanzang’s disciple. Sha Wujing accepted the explanation, particularly because the scheme appeared intended to delay rather than harm the Pilgrim 24 25.

Following Ao Tu’s instructions, he altered the river marker to read Black Water River, adopted the name Sha Tuolong, and posed as a fisherman. Ao Tu took away his nine skulls, while Sha Wujing built a wooden hut to receive the travelers 24 25.

Joining the Pilgrimage

As the fisherman, Sha Wujing claimed that monsters had destroyed his village and that a Bodhisattva had instructed him to await a holy monk. He described an Evil Tiger and a Poison Dragon as two of the river’s “Three Scourges,” then belittled Wukong’s abilities until Wukong went to confront the supposed tiger and entered a trap 26.

After Ao Tu captured Tang Sanzang and Bajie, Sha Wujing revealed himself as the third scourge. He later challenged Wukong under his Sha Tuolong identity and retreated underwater after three punishing staff exchanges, drawing Wukong after him 29.

When the obstruction ended, Sha Wujing accompanied Wukong to Guanyin. Learning that Ao Tu had deceived him, he apologized for delaying the pilgrimage. Guanyin excused his mistake and personally introduced him to Tang Sanzang, who accepted him as a disciple and named him Sha Monk. He then helped support Guanyin’s Willow-Leaf Boat during the crossing 32.

Appearance

Sha Wujing’s intimidating appearance repeatedly causes strangers to mistake him for a man-eating monster 163 282.

  • Face: Blue-black, with extremely rough features 163.
  • Build: Knotted sinews in his hands and feet 163.
  • Hair: Bald when posing as a fisherman; he attributes this to fire in his fabricated account 26.
  • Facial hair: Has a beard, which is singed during the Flaming Mountain ordeal 298.
  • Former adornment: A necklace of nine pilgrims’ skulls, removed by Ao Tu 24.
  • Aura: Fierce and baleful, but without the demonic aura Wukong expects from a disguised monster 26.

Personality

Sha Wujing is hardworking and generally willing to accept thankless duties. He guards and carries luggage, prepares meals, washes Tang Sanzang’s clothes, and helps with household chores while lodging with others. The narration explicitly describes him as bearing toil and complaints without protest 41 53 272 435 436 450.

His loyalty is strongest when his master is threatened. He offers to receive Ao Tu’s punishment for burning the cave rather than let Tang Sanzang suffer, refuses to surrender at Flaming Mountain, and declares that he would die without regretting his commitment to the westward journey. He also opposes Bajie’s attempts to abandon the pilgrimage 241 303 304 404.

His devotion does not always produce sound judgment. He initially trusts Ao Tu’s counterfeit Buddhist authority and later accepts Ao Tu’s impersonation of the Buddha. He often follows his senior brothers’ opinions, including their pressure to continue the Chechi contest and their arguments for leaving the injured stonecutter’s family behind 24 32 152 286 372.

Sha Wujing also wants recognition for his contributions. After severing Tiger Vanguard’s tail, he is reluctant to abandon the pursuit because he has accomplished little against the formidable enemies encountered along the journey 171.

Abilities & Skills

  • Is substantially outmatched by Wukong, Six-Eared Macaque, and the Bull Demon King in their direct clashes 29 300 303.

Divine Body and Endurance

Sha Wujing possesses a protective divine body, though it does not make him immune to injury or pain 109.

  • Survives Tiger Vanguard administering a full thousand club strokes 109.
  • Suffers severely from the beating because Ao Tu has sealed his magical power 109.
  • Has the webs of his hands split and half his body driven into the ground when blocking the Bull Demon King’s cudgel 303.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Nine pilgrims’ skulls — Formerly worn as a necklace. Guanyin explains that arranging them in the Nine Palaces formation around her Red Gourd would create a Dharma Boat. Because Ao Tu has taken them, she instead provides a Willow-Leaf Boat 24 32.
  • Fisherman’s disguise — Includes a straw rain cape, bamboo hat, and boat, used during the staged river obstruction 26.

Relationships

  • Tang Sanzang — Master. Sha Wujing serves as a protector and caretaker, and defends his master against both physical threats and slander 32 173 227 241.
  • Sun Wukong — Eldest senior brother. Sha Wujing relies on his strength and rescues, helps nurse him after injury, and proudly defends his origins and appointment as the Pilgrim’s protector 68 177 276.
  • Zhu Bajie — Second senior brother and frequent combat partner. Sha Wujing rebukes his laziness and lack of resolve, but sometimes joins him in shirking duties or avoiding responsibility 53 59 286 317 404.
  • Guanyin Bodhisattva — Spiritual guide. She brings him toward repentance, arranges his place in the pilgrimage, and forgives his involvement in Ao Tu’s deception 24 32.
  • Ao Tu — Deceiver and recurring captor. Their first encounter exploits Sha Wujing’s obedience to Buddhist authority; later confrontations include a beating ordered by Ao Tu and retaliation for Sha Wujing burning his cave 24 109 241.
  • Tiger Vanguard — Recurring opponent. He fights Sha Wujing at the river and Lotus Cave, administers his thousand-stroke beating, and later loses a tail to his spade 24 82 109 171.
