Zhao Chi asked all the female villagers, "We've finished putting up three buildings now. You've all seen them: the Blacksmith Shop, the Carpentry Shop, and the Tailor Shop. That means I need artisans too. If any of you are interested, just say so."
The women looked at one another.
Then they discussed it quietly.
In the end, three women stepped forward.
Chapter 28: Class change
"My lord, I'd like to be a tailor."
"My lord, could I be a blacksmith?"
"Lord, could you let me become a carpenter?"
Zhao Chi nodded. "Of course. If you're sure, I'll help you change classes in a moment."
All three women nodded.
Zhao Chi asked again, "Anyone else?"
The remaining villagers said nothing.
Tang Ruan asked, "My lord, I'd like to become a professional soldier."
Zhao Chi said, "Wait until tomorrow. Once we clear the land outside and build the Barracks, you'll be able to change your class to soldier."
Tang Ruan nodded. "Great! Then I'll be able to fight for you even better."
"My lord, I want to be a soldier too."
"Yes, me too. I want to kill our enemies."
"My lord, I'm willing to fight for you."
All seven of the remaining female villagers wanted to become soldiers.
He would just have to change their classes tomorrow.
With so few people, the proportion of soldiers wasn't an issue.
There were only this many mouths to feed, after all. Hunting an animal would provide enough food.
Zhao Chi called the three women over.
"You three, come stand over here. I'll change your classes now, then allocate your points afterward. You want to be a blacksmith, right?"
"Yes, my lord."
Zhao Chi clicked on the class-change information in the system.
These artisan and soldier classes were all standard classes.
He could simply change their classes directly.
With the corresponding buildings completed, all three classes had been unlocked in the system.
They were only beginner-level classes, though.
[Class] Blacksmith [Rank] Beginner [Skill] Forging +5 [Attributes] Enhancement points +5
Changing classes granted bonuses.
And those bonuses were substantial.
Zhao Chi was currently a Trainee Lord, while Gu Qing was an Initial Hero.
When Zhao Chi advanced to Junior Lord and Gu Qing advanced to Basic Hero, they would receive additional bonuses too.
They just needed to wait a few days.
Zhao Chi clicked the class-change option, then selected the female villager.
A ray of light shot out of Zhao Chi.
It entered the woman's body.
Just like leveling up, her class change was completed instantly.
Zhao Chi continued changing classes.
The carpenter came first.
[Class] Carpenter [Rank] Beginner [Skill] Woodworking +5 [Attributes] Enhancement points +5
Her class change was soon complete.
Then came the tailor.
[Class] Tailor [Rank] Beginner [Skill] Sewing +5 [Attributes] Enhancement points +5
All three women had changed classes.
At this point, Zhao Chi made a point of checking their names.
[Beginner carpenter: Li Zhu] [Beginner blacksmith: Ding Dang] [Beginner tailor: Feng Xiu]
Beginner classes could be acquired directly through a class change.
Higher-level artisans, however, generally had to advance through experience accumulated over time.
All three female artisans had gained five points in their professional skills.
Normally, a year of full-time work would bring the corresponding professional skill to around ten points.
Half a year of full-time work would give five points.
In other words, all three artisans now had the equivalent of six months of work experience.
They were more skilled than ordinary people.
When crafting, they also received a five-percent bonus to the effects of their professional skills.
Zhao Chi's professional skills were ten points in saber technique and ten points in shield technique.
That meant he had the equivalent of a year's experience using a saber and a year's experience using a shield.
When using either a saber or a shield, his effectiveness would increase by ten percent.
But that timeframe was only a reference.
With good talent, the values would rise quickly.
With poor talent, or if someone slacked off, the values would rise slowly.
Next, he would allocate points to the three female artisans.
They were artisans, after all.
What mattered was producing "more," working "faster," making things "better," and using "less."
Many secondary attributes were suitable:
[Increase stamina] Allowed long hours of work with very little rest. The ideal worker for a 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six-day workweek. Matched "more." [Increase energy] Reduced the need for sleep and allowed prolonged concentration, improving quality. Matched "more" and "better." [Increase attack speed] Attack speed helped not only in combat, but also made hands and feet quicker while crafting. Matched "faster." [Increase accuracy] Made crafting more precise, maintained quality, and reduced material waste. Matched "better" and "less." [Increase spiritual power] Could be converted into stamina and energy at any time. More or less matched "more." [Increase learning] Granted more experience, faster leveling, and faster skill improvement. Perhaps matched "faster?" or "less?" [Increase efficiency] The attribute most commonly used by artisans. Improved efficiency, conserved stamina and energy, and sped up crafting. Matched "faster" and "less." [Increase perception] A rather mysterious attribute. Perception included the five senses, along with inspiration and awareness, occasionally allowing the creation of exceptionally high-quality items. Matched "better."
Some other attributes had a slight effect too, but not as much as these.
All three female artisans were level one and had one enhancement point each.
Adding the five points granted by their class changes gave them six points in total.
Zhao Chi tried to activate the Transplant Flowers, Connect Jade talent, but failed.
He would have to choose, then.
It was a difficult choice.
Every option was useful. None of them would truly be a mistake.
It was simply a matter of which best suited their current circumstances.
Even choosing poorly wouldn't be a major problem.
There would be items later that could reset their points.
Zhao Chi really wanted to increase their learning attribute so he could train them faster.
But that wasn't suitable for a new lord. It was better suited to established lords with resources to spare for training.
What he needed now was to turn out products and develop as quickly as possible.
In the end, Zhao Chi chose "efficiency" for all three of them.
