Office and Authority
Relationship with the Imperial Family
The Heavenly Queen’s marriage binds the Nine Heavens to the Imperial Family. Qi Shiyun describes it as an institutional alliance in which affection is secondary to keeping the emperor and the Nine Heavens united. Throughout Great Yu’s thousand-year history, the organization has retained the position of empress 78.
- Leadership: The Heavenly Queen is the Nine Heavens’ supreme leader, not merely an imperial consort overseeing a separate organization 78.
- Political balance: The Nine Heavens, Imperial Family, and outer court form a three-sided balance that has sustained Great Yu. The Nine Heavens traditionally seeks the empress’s position without claiming the imperial throne 400.
- Legal motherhood: The Heavenly Queen is legally the mother of every imperial prince, regardless of biological parentage 312.
- Current holder’s privileges: Emperor Yongchang recognizes her right to use imperial self-address. Together, they are called the Two Sages, ruling side by side 297 301.
- Limits of command: The Vein Masters possess irreplaceable abilities and considerable independence. Even the Heavenly Queen must persuade or coax figures such as the Heavenly Physician and Heavenly Diviner 115 195.
Childlessness and Succession
The Heavenly Queen Lineage is initially described as requiring its holders to surrender the possibility of having children. This prevents a Heavenly Queen from using the Nine Heavens to advance her own descendants in a succession struggle 78.
The current administration consequently avoids detailed investigations of the princes, including the Crown Prince, rather than becoming entangled in their competition 110.
Later revelations qualify the claim that every Heavenly Queen has been childless:
- A Heavenly Queen five hundred years earlier became pregnant through the Empress’s interference and died as a result 400 403.
- The current Heavenly Queen’s pregnancy threatens the entire political balance: an emperor born to the leader of the Nine Heavens would unite powers that had deliberately remained separate 400.
- Facing this crisis, the current holder considers abdicating in favor of her disciple. The disciple has already become involved with Emperor Yongchang and is loyal to him, though not unreservedly loyal to her teacher 405 406.
Historical Holders
| Holder | Documented significance |
|---|---|
| Founding Heavenly Queen | Taught that politics without personal ties could not endure, a principle associated with the Nine Heavens’ protection of its members. Emperor Yongchang places only her above the current holder in historical standing 287 297. |
| Heavenly Queen of five hundred years ago | Was killed through a pregnancy engineered by the Empress. Her death provoked collective retaliation from the Nine Heavens 403. |
| Heavenly Queen preceding the current holder | Failed to protect Jiang Ping’an when he spoke impartially for the Crown Prince and was targeted by the future Emperor Yongchang. This destroyed his sense of belonging to the organization 301. |
| Current Heavenly Queen, known as Yan Shuang | Rose with the new generation of Nine Heavens, helped secure Yongchang’s rule, and became his co-ruler while defending the organization’s independent interests 198 297 301. |
Current Holder
Identity
The current Heavenly Queen is introduced as a Miao woman named Yan Shuang, with the Miao Frontier regarded as her territory 261.
Her identity becomes more complicated as older powers emerge:
- A separate, sealed woman who looks exactly like her claims that the Heavenly Queen stole her identity. Their voices and bearing differ 261 271.
- The sealed woman blames the Heavenly Queen for obstructing her recovery, but remains trapped within Shakyamuni’s dream-realm seal and a Living Person Coffin 305.
- Xie Wu recognizes the Heavenly Queen’s Taotie Dharma Form as evidence of the returned Empress and pledges to serve her again 332.
- The Heavenly Queen subsequently presents herself to Yang Zhenhai as the ruler whom his ancestors followed five hundred years earlier 354.
These revelations coexist with the later pregnancy plot, in which the Heavenly Queen identifies the historical Empress as an enemy and warns that she may have possessed Princess Yongxing 400 421.
Appearance
- Snow-white, lustrous skin likened to fine mutton-fat white jade; exceptionally refined facial features 98.
- Phoenix eyes conveying both penetrating wisdom and sovereign authority 98.
- A commanding voice, noticeably different from that of the identical-looking woman encountered in Lianshan Xin’s dream 271.
Personality and Leadership
The current Heavenly Queen places unusually strong emphasis on comradeship. She protects Nine Heavens members even when imperial orders point elsewhere, welcomes Jiang Ping’an back despite his conflict with Yongchang, and openly promises to fight for her comrades as they would fight for her 287 301 405. Her rewards are practical: she invests resources and collective effort in Lianshan Xin’s advancement rather than treating his achievements as her own 361 362.
Her feelings for Emperor Yongchang are genuine, although she understands his infidelity and manipulation. She accepts the immense authority he grants her in place of exclusive affection, but distinguishes love for him from subservience to the Imperial Family 89 297 397. She is also willing to relinquish office for a credible opportunity to reach Dao Integration 405 406.
Abilities and Skills
Heavenly Queen Lineage and Seven Killings Manual
Her principal cultivation belongs to the Heavenly Queen Lineage, rather than the Netherworld inheritance. She is shown practicing the Seven Killings Manual when the removal of her karmic obstacles triggers her breakthrough 308 311.
- Her Dharma Form’s previous flaws prevented her from properly approaching Celestial Phenomena 308.
- Xie Tianxia believes she has the potential to advance sooner if she relinquishes the emotional burdens of her marriage and office 255.
World-Devouring Spirit-Swallowing Great Method
Maitreya identifies this technique as an inheritance of the primordial demonic path. The Heavenly Queen later confirms that she possesses the Devil Ancestor’s core inheritance 330 360.
- Refines the Dragon Maiden’s origin and works to conceal the resulting Dragon Clan aura 330.
- Converts Yang Society President’s remaining cultivation, blood essence, and vitality into nourishment for Lianshan Xin’s developing Dharma Form 361.
- Can be countered: Xie Guanhai carries a Buddhist treasure that suppresses the method during their battle 368.
Taotie Dharma Form
Her Taotie Dharma Form is a recognizable marker of the ancient Empress’s legacy 332 354.
- Secures Xie Wu’s allegiance and establishes her claim before Yang Zhenhai 332 354.
- Alongside the Devil Ancestor’s inheritance, forms the basis of her confidence that she can devour or suppress the entity growing inside her—until she considers Shakyamuni’s involvement 403.
Netherworld Ghostfire and Six Paths of Reincarnation Fist
She cultivates Netherworld Ghostfire as a contingency against the woman sealed in the coffin, initially avoiding deeper pursuit of the Lord of the Netherworld’s legacy because of its dangers 311.
- Lianshan Xin teaches her the fist technique in a dream. Combining it with Netherworld Ghostfire allows her to master the Six Paths of Reincarnation Fist 360.
- She regards this as a major opportunity, but considers the Devil Ancestor’s inheritance better suited to her aptitude 360.
Heaven and Earth in the Sleeve
A spatial divine ability that creates a world within the sleeve, granting capabilities normally associated with higher cultivation 330.
- Stores the Living Person Coffin with a sweep of her sleeve 330.
- Its use surprises Maitreya because spatial mastery of this kind should ordinarily exceed a Celestial Phenomena cultivator 330.
Karma and Dream-Cultivation Guidance
She understands One Dream, Three Thousand Worlds well enough to identify its emphasis on space-time and karma, then assist Lianshan Xin through karmic connections 311.
- Trains with Lianshan Xin and Xie Tianxia in dreams for nearly a month 311.
- Offers assistance with either the dream art or Netherworld Ghostfire, while cautioning him against pursuing the latter prematurely 311.
Intelligence and Covert Operations
Her networks reach beyond the imperial court into the Demon Cult, Miao Frontier, Divine Dragon Island, and Dragon Palace 78 280 332.
- Restricts knowledge of Zhuo Biyu’s double-agent status to protect her cover 78.
- Recruits the Gu King to refine Love Gu and monitor the Miao Frontier, though he later plots against her 280.
- Uses Yama for killings that the emperor and Heavenly Queen cannot openly undertake without violating the court’s own rules 297.
- Creates misleading information during her pregnancy crisis to obstruct an enemy who may know her arrangements 401.
Equipment and Items

- Immortal-Saving Elixirs — Gives four to Lianshan Xin during preparations involving Thousand Faces and the threat posed by the Empress 421.
Relationships
- Emperor Yongchang — Husband and co-ruler. She helps secure his throne and manages its hidden threats, while he grants her exceptional authority 297 301.
- Xie Tianxia — Trusted comrade and rival. Their competition does not prevent mutual support or the ability to entrust their lives to one another 231.
- Lianshan Xin — Protected subordinate, trainee, and major contributor to her advancement. She declines his request to become her adopted son, anticipating that unequal status could complicate their future relationship 308 311 362.
- Jiang Ping’an / Yama — Covert collaborator whom she welcomes back into the Nine Heavens and shields against imperial hostility 297 301.
- Heavenly Diviner — Longstanding comrade who saved her from an arrow twenty years earlier. She personally confronts the Turtle Chancellor after learning it has possessed him 383.

- Zhuo Biyu — Double agent whom she protects and tests through further infiltration of the Demon Cult 78 114.
- Thousand Faces — Former assassination target later accepted as a secret recruit. His management of the Shen Clan becomes a test before appointment as Heavenly Transformation 112 315 421.
- Yan Xiezhi — Publicly identified as her elder brother, though Jiang Ping’an questions the biological relationship. She authorizes his replacement and accepts his execution if corruption is established 297 301.
