Background / History

Academy and Team 7

An orphaned Uchiha heir, Sasuke begins his ninja career focused on killing Itachi, whom he holds responsible for his clan’s destruction. At twelve, he introduces himself as having few interests beyond that ambition. He is assigned to Kakashi’s Team 7 alongside Naruto Uzumaki and Gekkō Raito, while Sakura joins a separate, hospital-focused team 35.

Sasuke initially competes with his teammates rather than cooperating. During the Bell Test, he attacks early because he fears Naruto and Raito will secure the two available bells. The three ultimately pass after joining forces against Kakashi 35 37.

Early Missions and Training

On the Land of Waves escort mission, Sasuke declines the leadership role, allowing Raito to take command. He serves as the forward scout while Naruto guards Tazuna and Raito covers the rear 43.

Raito’s strength and Naruto’s rapid progress intensify Sasuke’s fear of becoming Team 7’s weakest member. Their training culminates in Raito provoking his Sharingan awakening. Sasuke subsequently pursues Chidori training under Kakashi and uses the technique against the immobilized Snow Shinobi during a later mission 49 53 58.

Chūnin Exams and Orochimaru’s Mark

During the Chūnin Exams, Sasuke defeats three Genin teams and collects one Heaven Scroll and two Earth Scrolls before Orochimaru ambushes him. Despite resisting with swordsmanship, Fire Release, and Chidori, he is overwhelmed and marked with a Cursed Seal. Naruto intervenes, and Raito enables him to carry Sasuke to safety 67.

Kakashi suppresses the seal after warning that its continued activity could destroy Sasuke’s body. Still suffering neck pain, Sasuke insists on entering his preliminary match against Akadō Yoroi 68.

In the finals, Sasuke and Naruto fight evenly through taijutsu and chakra-enhanced swordsmanship. Their final Chidori–Rasengan collision leaves both collapsed, and Hayate declares a draw. Raito heals them afterward 72.

Defection from Konoha

Sasuke leaves Konoha for Otogakure with the Sound Four. Shikamaru leads a hastily assembled pursuit team, while Sasuke warns his escorts not to underestimate Konoha’s Genin 110.

When Raito catches him beside a river, Sasuke questions whether Itachi could truly have exterminated hundreds of Uchiha alone without anyone escaping or ANBU noticing. He also cites Konoha’s treatment of Raito as a political bargaining chip as evidence of its leaders’ hypocrisy. Raito accepts his decision to leave rather than forcing him back 113 114.

Before separating, Sasuke challenges Raito to a sword duel to measure the gap between them. He draws the Kusanagi Sword and coats it in Chidori as Raito answers with Zangetsu and Hot Breath Blade 114.

Revenge against Danzo and the Search for Itachi

Raito contacts Sasuke after deciding to confront Danzo, revealing Danzo’s involvement in the massacre and theft of Uchiha eyes. Sasuke joins him inside a barrier, where they repeatedly kill Danzo as Izanagi restores him. After Danzo’s death, Sasuke leaves Konoha with Raito’s group 200 206 209 211.

Sasuke later assembles Taka with Jūgo, Suigetsu, and Karin and travels to Kirigakure to seek Raito’s help locating Itachi. A reunion dinner with his former teammates turns hostile when Naruto demands his return to Konoha. Their ensuing battle escalates until Raito intervenes and overwhelms both of them 277 279 280 281 282 283.

Itachi’s Death and the Truth of the Massacre

Raito brings Sasuke to Itachi’s hideout, where Sasuke insists on facing his brother himself. During the battle, Orochimaru emerges from Sasuke as the Eight-Headed Serpent, only for Itachi to seal him with the Totsuka Blade 287 291 294.

Expecting Itachi to take his eyes, Sasuke instead receives a gentle tap on the forehead. Itachi dies before him, leaving Sasuke confused about his brother’s intentions. Sasuke collapses, awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan, and is carried toward Kirigakure by Raito 294.

Still seeking answers, Sasuke later confronts a reincarnated Itachi. Learning the truth behind the massacre does not reconcile him with Konoha; he condemns Itachi’s choice to sacrifice their family and vows to destroy the village. When Naruto again attempts to retrieve him, Sasuke formally accepts Raito’s invitation to join Kirigakure 306 324 336 337 338.

Restoring the Uchiha Clan

Raito explains that restoring Sasuke’s clanspeople requires their cells. With their burial locations unknown, Danzo’s preserved Sharingan become a possible source of the necessary material 341.

Sasuke infiltrates Konoha, steals the Scroll of Seals, and enters Root’s former base with Suigetsu and Jūgo’s assistance. There he discovers a wall of preserved Sharingan taken from most of the clan’s awakened ninja. He carefully retrieves the eyes while Konoha’s pursuers close in 344 350.

After Raito brings the Uchiha back, Sasuke announces that he has sworn allegiance to Kirigakure and that the clan will belong to the village. Raito leaves their settlement arrangements to him. Sasuke shows Fugaku their future land and explains that Kirigakure now welcomes kekkei genkai clans 355 356.

Capture and Later Life

Sasuke disappears while investigating the Three Great Shinobi Villages. Orochimaru, Obito, and Madara target his direct Uchiha lineage for their bloodline experiments. Raito eventually finds him gravely weakened in a laboratory and restores him with Medical Ninjutsu 382 385 396.

In later years, Sasuke remains in Kirigakure and has a daughter, Sarada. He proudly supports her ambition to become Mizukage and confidently predicts her victory over Naruto and Sakura’s son, Boruto. Despite Naruto’s lingering hopes, Sasuke has no desire to return to Konoha 457 470.

Personality

Sasuke is proud, competitive, and acutely sensitive to being surpassed. Naruto’s Rasengan and Raito’s overwhelming strength initially make him feel humiliated, but also drive him to train harder. His reluctance to ask openly for instruction contrasts with his eventual willingness to seek Raito’s swordsmanship guidance 48 49 53 72.

His hostility toward Konoha develops from personal grief into a rejection of its leadership and treatment of the Uchiha. He refuses to accept that loyalty to the village excuses his family’s destruction, even when that argument comes from Itachi 113 114 336.

His reserve does not erase his attachments. He still calls Naruto and Raito his friends after Team 7’s collapse, does not want innocent people endangered because of him, and becomes openly affectionate and indulgent around Sarada 66 306 470.
