Background / History

Childhood and Academy

Naruto grows up as the orphaned son of Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze. His parentage is concealed while Danzo spreads knowledge of his identity as the Nine-Tails jinchūriki, provoking widespread hostility toward him. Raito, Sasuke, and others provide companionship that helps keep that isolation from consuming him 29 340.

At the Academy, Naruto is known as the “Dead Last.” He repeatedly fails the ordinary Clone Technique despite being comfortable with Transformation and Substitution. His friendship with Raito includes casual outings and classroom trouble, while his rivalry with Sasuke is intensified by his crush on Sakura 11 13 30.

Graduation and Team 7

After Naruto buys him ramen, Raito agrees to help him prepare for the accelerated graduation examination. Rather than continue struggling with illusionary clones, Naruto learns the Shadow Clone Technique and fills a park with roughly one thousand copies of himself. A masked attacker subsequently knocks him unconscious and abducts him, prompting Raito to pursue 30.

Naruto passes the examination and credits Raito for his success. He is assigned to Team 7 with Raito and Sasuke under Kakashi, rather than with Sakura. During Kakashi’s bell test, he follows Raito’s plan to rescue Sasuke and prepare a surprise attack; their cooperation earns all three a pass 33 35 37.

Early Missions and the Chūnin Exams

Before Team 7’s escort mission to the Land of Waves, Naruto asks Raito for stronger ninjutsu because he feels he is falling behind his teammates. Raito teaches him Wind Release, introduces Shadow Clone-assisted training, and begins instructing him in the Rasengan. Naruto completes the Rasengan during the mission and subsequently joins Sasuke in an unsuccessful spar against Raito 41 49.

Their competition continues through the Land of Snow mission and the Chūnin Exams. During the exams, Naruto rushes to protect an injured Sasuke from Orochimaru and uses the Rasengan against his snakes before Raito intervenes 58 67.

In the finals, Naruto and Sasuke fight evenly through taijutsu, clones, and chakra-enhanced weapons. Their final Rasengan–Chidori collision incapacitates both, and Hayate declares a draw. Raito treats their injuries afterward 72.

Team 7’s Separation

Jiraiya takes Naruto with him to search for Tsunade, keeping the jinchūriki away from Danzo during Konoha’s political instability. Meanwhile, Raito joins Kirigakure and Sasuke leaves for Orochimaru, breaking apart the original Team 7 92 120.

Naruto later confronts Raito and demands that he return to Konoha. When his own strength proves insufficient, he bargains with the Nine-Tails and escalates through increasingly dangerous transformations. The battle reaches a berserk six-tailed state, requiring Jiraiya’s attention 135 138 139 141 142.

Bringing his teammates home becomes a central motive for Naruto’s training. After mastering Sage Mode at Mount Myōboku, he returns to Konoha still determined to retrieve both of them. Tsunade permits a visit to Kirigakure but explicitly warns him that attacking its Mizukage could trigger war 239 275 277.

Reunion in Kirigakure

At a reunion dinner, Raito refuses to abandon his position as Sixth Mizukage. Sasuke likewise rejects Konoha and accuses its leadership of responsibility for the Uchiha massacre. Naruto disputes Sasuke’s accusation and challenges him outside 280.

Naruto and Sasuke demonstrate considerable growth in their ensuing fight, but neither can overcome Raito. Even Sage Mode fails to close Naruto’s disadvantage, and his subsequent eight-tailed transformation is defeated. Raito advises him to integrate the Nine-Tails’ power with Sage Mode rather than treating them as separate sources of strength 281 282 283 284.

Jiraiya’s Death and the Akatsuki Hunt

Naruto witnesses Nagato kill Jiraiya and loses control of the Nine-Tails’ chakra. His rampage devastates Konoha and tears through its defenders, leading Raito to leave Kirigakure to intervene 298.

Afterward, Naruto insists that he has mastered the Nine-Tails and demands permission to hunt Akatsuki. Tsunade reluctantly allows him to depart with Sakura and Sai, placing Sakura in charge of restraining him when necessary 306 307.

Near Amegakure, the team encounters the resurrected Hashirama and learns that Sasuke is nearby. Naruto again tries to bring Sasuke home, but Raito declares that Kirigakure will protect him. Naruto also learns that Raito has already killed Nagato, ending his opportunity to confront Jiraiya’s killer himself 335 336 337 338.

Family Reunion and the Ōtsutsuki Conflict

Raito’s resurrection of Hashirama makes Naruto wonder whether his parents could also return. He eventually reunites with Minato through Impure World Reincarnation, welcomes him without resentment, and takes him out for ramen. Minato is struck by his son’s maturity and disturbed by the shabby apartment in which he lives 345 382.

During the threat from the moon’s Ōtsutsuki, Naruto asks Raito to help Konoha and learns that the Uzumaki descend from Asura and Hagoromo. After further devastation to his village, he renews his determination to catch up to Raito and become Hokage 393 411.

Naruto later fights in Kirigakure’s defense alongside Sasuke. A resurrected, expressionless Jiraiya confronts him on the battlefield, leaving Naruto unable to bring himself to injure his mentor 423.

Sixth Hokage

After the twenty-year time skip, Naruto has succeeded Tsunade as the Sixth Hokage. He travels to Kirigakure’s Water Seven with Sakura and Sai for the Shadow Palace Conference, where he reunites with Sasuke and Gaara 441 443 445.

Naruto marries Sakura, and their son Boruto participates in the later Chūnin Exams. Although he has achieved his childhood ambition, Naruto acknowledges that Raito’s strength and Kirigakure’s supremacy remain far beyond his reach. His later conversations with Sasuke are more restrained, particularly when Sasuke again refuses to revisit Konoha 457 470.

Appearance

Naruto has striking blond hair and blue eyes, with a resemblance to Minato strong enough for Tsunade to suspect his parentage on sight 41 135.

  • Early clothing: His first mass Shadow Clone display fills the park with orange-clad copies 30.
  • Sage Mode: Orange-red pigmentation appears around his eyes, and his pupils become horizontal 282.
  • Tailed-beast transformations: Red chakra forms a cloak and additional tails; his five-tailed state develops bone armor 138 141.
  • Hokage attire: Dons the Sixth Hokage’s robes after succeeding Tsunade 441.

Personality

Naruto is outspoken, competitive, and eager for recognition. His childhood ambition is not merely to become Hokage, but to surpass the previous Hokage and make the entire village acknowledge him. His enthusiasm also expresses itself through pranks, classroom outbursts, and extravagant gratitude toward people who help him 13 30 35.

His loyalty can become coercive. He repeatedly refuses to accept Raito’s and Sasuke’s decisions to leave Konoha, even declaring that he will drag Sasuke home with broken limbs if necessary. Nevertheless, he understands Tsunade’s warning that attacking the Mizukage has consequences beyond a personal dispute 275 277.

Naruto actively seeks instruction when he recognizes his shortcomings. Raito’s progress motivates him to train harder, while his rivalry with Sasuke develops into a mixture of competition and mutual respect 41 53 72.

Loss changes him substantially. Jiraiya’s death provokes both a catastrophic rampage and a grim desire for revenge. By his reunion with Minato, he presents himself with a maturity that surprises his father; in adulthood, he is more willing to acknowledge the distance between his wishes and his former teammates’ chosen lives 298 307 382 470.

Abilities & Skills

Chakra Reserves and Uzumaki Constitution

  • Possesses enough chakra to create approximately one thousand Shadow Clones while still an Academy student 30.
  • Recovers chakra exceptionally quickly; during the search for Koyuki, his recovery is described as occurring in the time needed to drink water 55.
  • Must initially devote part of his chakra to suppressing the Nine-Tails, whose interference hinders his control 15 40 55.

Shadow Clone Technique

  • Uses large numbers of physical clones to surround opponents, compensate for differences in taijutsu, and conduct wide-area searches 55 68 72.
  • Accelerates training by recovering his clones’ experience and insights when they disperse, a method taught by Raito 41.
  • Numbers alone do not guarantee success: Sasuke’s Sharingan enables him to identify and destroy clones efficiently 72 281.

Rasengan

  • Forms a densely compressed, rotating sphere of chakra without hand seals; Raito teaches him the technique before the Land of Waves mission 41 49 72.
  • Uses it to destroy a large tree, repel Orochimaru’s snakes, and clash directly with Sasuke’s Chidori 49 67 72.
  • By his later duel with Sasuke, his execution is described as flawless, reflecting a major improvement over his Academy chakra control 281.

Wind Release

Technique Application
Beast Wave Palm Projects cutting wind attacks; initially learned through mass Shadow Clone practice 41 281.
Vacuum Blade Coats a kunai or Chakra Blade in sharp wind chakra to enhance its cutting power 72 281.
Wind Release: Shuriken Infuses a thrown shuriken with enough cutting power to slice stone 281.
Vacuum Sphere Used to open a confrontation with Sasuke near Amegakure 337.
  • Wind gives Naruto an elemental advantage against Sasuke’s Lightning Release, but is disadvantaged against Fire Release because it strengthens the flames 72 281.

Taijutsu and Weapon Combat

  • Develops sufficient taijutsu skill to fight Sasuke evenly during the Chūnin Exams finals, earning Rock Lee’s praise 72.
  • Adopts elements of Raito’s chakra-flow swordsmanship for use with his Vacuum Blade 72.
  • Remains less technically accomplished with a blade than Sasuke; in their later duel, elemental advantage helps him withstand Sasuke’s superior swordsmanship 281.

Nine-Tails Power

  • Negotiates directly with Kurama for chakra, initially promising one favor while explicitly excluding release from the seal 138.
  • Gains greatly increased strength, chakra tails, and rapid injury repair through its power 138 140 284.
  • Higher transformations initially threaten his consciousness and control; grief over Jiraiya’s death later triggers another rampage 141 142 298.
  • Eventually claims full mastery, an assessment supported by Minato’s later observations 306 382.

Sage Mode

  • Learns Mount Myōboku’s senjutsu under Jiraiya and completes Sage Mode training in less than a month 201 226 239.
  • Gains sensory abilities, although they cannot reveal the depth of Raito’s chakra 280.
  • Requires approximately one minute of natural-energy gathering during his duel with Sasuke 282.
  • Raito recommends combining Sage Mode with the Nine-Tails’ power; the encounter does not establish that Naruto has completed that integration 284.

Summoning Technique

  • Learns the technique during his journey with Jiraiya to find Tsunade 132.
