  • By Tiana Island, his Pugilist potion was digesting continuously, and he estimated that another week would suffice. Kronos gave him the Sequence 7 Weapon Master formula, but no advancement to that Sequence is documented in the supplied chapters 45.

Background / History

Gner served in the Army eight or nine years before meeting Kronos. His fighting ability and intelligence attracted several generals’ attention, and he encountered Beyonders associated with the Church of the Evernight Goddess. His prospects collapsed after he injured a noble connected to the Levett Family, leaving him relegated to an instructor’s post at a naval base 10 13.

A general who valued Gner negotiated with the Levett Family to secure his freedom and offered to transfer him back before departing for the Southern Continent. Gner refused because he no longer wanted to risk becoming entangled in powerful people’s struggles. The general died on the Southern Continent four years before Kronos learned Gner’s history; without that protection, Gner remained at the base 10 13.

Kronos’s offer to help him become a Warrior restored his ambition. Learning how much his former general had done for him brought Gner to tears; he spent that evening drinking and repeating that he had let the general down. After taking the Warrior potion, he retired from military service and joined Kronos in Backlund 13 14 22.

Personality

Gner is blunt, perceptive, and difficult to fool with obvious theatrics. He quickly recognized that Kronos’s initial friendliness was a pretext for learning his techniques. As a teacher, however, he was genuinely dedicated, explaining the reasoning behind his attacks and identifying every flaw in Kronos’s movements 10.

His military setback left him dispirited and drinking heavily. Recruitment gave him a renewed sense of purpose: he moderated his drinking, worked to restore his fitness, and took his responsibilities seriously. He continued to enjoy strong spirits and emphatically rejected the idea of quitting alcohol altogether 10 13 22.

His fear of political struggles extends to personal discomfort around high-ranking nobles. He became visibly nervous on entering Argyle Manor, but gradually relaxed around Kronos’s family and eventually began speaking to Marquis Argyle voluntarily 13 22 34 35.

Gner combines professional caution with a mischievous streak. He insists on reconnaissance before battle, yet enjoys mocking Kronos’s acting and deliberately overplaying his own supporting role. Rapid Beyonder advancement briefly made him overconfident, but he recognized the problem when Kronos challenged his assumptions 22 32 41 42 43.

Abilities & Skills

Battlefield Combat

Gner’s techniques emphasize surviving lethal encounters rather than performing formal fighting movements 9 10.

  • Instinctive execution: He teaches that movements must become habits; consciously deciding what to do during a life-or-death fight is too slow 10.
  • Unarmed combat: Even as an ordinary human, he could defeat some Sequence 8 opponents. As a newly advanced Pugilist, he decisively defeated a bodyguard who had held that Sequence for nearly five years 22 23 24.
  • Combat instruction: His training includes weighted vests and sandbags, sustained sparring, and detailed explanations of openings and mistakes. These lessons accelerated Kronos’s Melee Scholar potion digestion 10.
  • Weapons: He teaches dagger and combat-blade techniques, although he trusts his fists more and dislikes relying on weapons 13 32.
  • Improvised weapons: He used the Lucky One Cane as a heavy club against the Evil-Patterned Black Panther, coordinating his blows with Kronos’s spells 49.

Pugilist Physique and Combat Limits

His Warrior Pathway advancements strengthen his body, but superior technique does not eliminate the disadvantages of facing higher Sequences 23 24.

  • After becoming a Pugilist, he described himself as capable of taking on two versions of his former self 23.
  • During mountain travel, he maintained his pace while talking, even when Kronos accelerated enough to exhaust himself 46.
  • Against a Sequence 7 Nightmare, his technique was better, but his attacks inflicted less damage and he was gradually forced onto the defensive 24.
  • The Nightmare’s dream ability briefly blanked his awareness, creating an opening to subdue him. The Nightmare nevertheless judged him capable of holding off an unprepared Spirit Medium 24.

Fatigue-Relieving Meditation

As a child, Gner found a book containing unfamiliar writing and hand gestures. He later identified the writing as Emperor Roselle’s script, but the book was lost and he remembered only one gesture. Kronos recognized it as the Bing, or “Soldier,” hand seal of the Daoist Nine Secrets 12 13.

  • Relieves both mental and physical fatigue, even before Gner becomes a Beyonder 12.
  • Produces a sensation of warmth entering through his pores 12.
  • Uses an image of his first revolver as the focus of meditation 12.
  • Does not produce the voices or visions that Kronos experiences when experimenting with the seals 12.
  • Gner is not shown knowing the other Nine Secrets gestures 12.

Reconnaissance and Battlefield Instincts

  • Investigated the Black Skull Gang’s movements, meetings, and apparent Sequences, reporting his findings to Kronos 27 29 32.
  • Recognized similarities between a Midnight Poet and the Nightmare he had fought, helping Kronos infer his opponent’s pathway 24.
  • Gathered local information in bars, including reports of Saint Luo Village’s unusual illness 38 45 46.
  • Approached a hut covertly and knocked its caretaker unconscious during the volcano investigation 39.

Wilderness Survival

  • Draws on experience marching through the wilderness to explain terrain, dangers, and outdoor equipment quality 46.
  • Hunts animals for food and prepares them while traveling 41 48.
  • Keeps watch by monitoring his surroundings even while appearing to stare into a campfire. His vigilance denied the lurking black panther an opening for several hours 48.
  • Chooses safer places to relocate camp and avoids butchering a carcass at an unsuitable site 49.
  • Can skin and dismember animals quickly and precisely. Under guidance, he removed the panther’s head and connected spine intact, but left extraction and spiritual preservation to a specialist 50.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Weighted training gear — A sandbag vest and weights strapped to the limbs, used in Kronos’s combat training 10.
  • Dagger — Carried during the mountain expedition and later used to process the Evil-Patterned Black Panther 49 50.
  • Lucky One Cane — Borrowed from Kronos for the panther fight; used as a heavy weapon rather than for its other abilities 49.
  • Weapon Master potion formula — Given to him by Kronos so he could begin searching for Sequence 7 ingredients before finishing Pugilist digestion 45.

Relationships

  • Kronos — Student, employer, and friend. Gner teaches him combat, serves as his bodyguard, and assists with reconnaissance and adventures. Kronos offers continued cooperation as allies once Gner becomes powerful 10 13 34.
  • Unnamed Army general — Former patron who protected Gner and negotiated his freedom. Gner remains deeply grateful and mourns having disappointed him 13 14.
  • Marquis Argyle — Supports Gner’s recruitment and approves his Pugilist advancement. Gner initially fears meeting him but gradually becomes comfortable enough to speak with him 11 22 35.
  • Violent Bear — Drinking companion with whom Gner quickly becomes friendly. Gner visits his bar regularly, making it a useful place for Kronos to send messages 25 32.
  • Annie — Kronos’s younger sister. Her questions do not trigger his usual anxiety around nobles, and he entertains her with Army stories 34.

Story Role / Major Arcs

  • Philip arranges Gner as Kronos’s sparring partner. Their sessions become a regular two-hour morning routine in exchange for good liquor each week 9 10.
  • Gner’s meditation introduces Kronos to a surviving Nine Secrets hand seal 12.
  • He accepts recruitment after Kronos explains that the position concerns Beyonder growth and exploration rather than political influence 13.

Backlund and the Black Skull Gang

  • After retiring, Gner joins Kronos in Empress Borough and advances to Pugilist with Argel Family resources 22 23.
  • His defeat by the Nightmare exposes the limits of relying on close combat against mid-sequence powers 24.
  • Kronos introduces him to company managers as a trusted potential messenger, while Gner independently investigates the harbor and Black Skull Gang 27.
  • He accompanies Kronos during the confrontation with the gang and the subsequent retreat to Argyle Manor. Learning that stronger wraiths had threatened them persuades him to remain at the manor despite his discomfort 33 34.

Sea Voyage and Damir Island

  • Boards the ship under his own name while Kronos adopts the alias Klein 37.
  • Helps investigate a possible Phoenix-related Spirit World entrance near Damir’s extinct volcano. They withdraw, and Kronos blocks the passage for a later return 38 39 40.
  • Poses as a cured-meat merchant and skeptical spectator to support Kronos’s Warlock act. His staged challenges prompt spell demonstrations that convince the villagers and advance Kronos’s potion digestion 40 41 42 43.
  • Accepts Kronos’s warning to avoid Bansy Harbor until reaching angel-level strength 44.

Tiana Mountain Expedition

  • Reports Saint Luo Village’s unusual illness, obtains outdoor supplies, and guides Kronos through the mountains 46.
  • Helps fight the Evil-Patterned Black Panther using the borrowed cane while Kronos supplies lightning and fire spells 49.
  • Initially refuses Kronos’s request to continue alone, then accepts after recognizing his resolve. Upset at losing his immediate bodyguard role, he nevertheless carries the panther back to the harbor 50.
  • Negotiates with a Church of Knowledge informant to process the carcass for one-third of its remaining meat and bones, performing the knife work himself 50.
