| Status | Alive after defeating Zhong Qi at Chen Family Fort 50 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 1, “Why Divide Yin and Yang?” 1 |
Power Progression
Wang Qi’s cultivation does not follow the standard martial sequence: he retains internal qi rather than permanently converting all of it into inner force, and opens meridians before completing the conventional Force Transformation stage 18 33.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Internal qi cultivation; early out-of-body practice | 1 | Already practices the Lesser Yang Qi method taught by Wang Dashan and can leave his sleeping body. Returning at dawn restores his exhausted body and mind. |
| First Yang Arises / Yang Arising | 2 3 | Reaches Lesser Yang Qi’s highest stage. His initial breakthrough does not increase his total internal qi, but greatly improves replenishment, stamina, speed, agility, and strength. |
| Initial qi-to-force control | 11 | Experiments with turning internal qi into force to repel mosquitoes; discovers that each breath also draws in essence from the surrounding void. |
| Fine internal qi control | 18 | Can direct qi to a touched area of skin almost immediately. Delays full conversion into inner force to preserve both martial and spellcasting options. |
| True yang qi replenishment and growth | 24 | After exhausting his true yang qi delivering spirits, perceives heaven and earth origin yang through his Mind’s Eye. His true yang qi returns in greater abundance, prompting attempts at meridian opening. |
| Active true yang qi circulation outside the body | 29 | Uses true yang qi to destroy hostile spirits with palm strikes and punches. After returning, finds that both his true yang qi and internal qi have increased. |
| Lesser Celestial Circuit opened; provisional Meridian Opening Realm | 32 33 | Has opened the conception and governing vessels, plus two arm meridians whose names he does not know. His placement in Meridian Opening is explicitly provisional because he skipped the usual Force Transformation stage. |
| Intensive external body conditioning | 36 | Begins prolonged physical training without inner force assistance, using homemade wooden exercise equipment. His out-of-body practice replenishes true yang qi and internal qi. |
| Rapid body-conditioning and spell mastery | 37 | True yang qi and the aftereffects of out-of-body cultivation repair training damage. Achieves instant Clothing-Cleansing and Water-Repelling spells, silent Light-Concealing Shadow-Masking, and direct perception of his meridians. |
Background / History
Wang Qi retains memories of a previous life, including an interest in fitness, habits of cleanliness, and knowledge of the Heart Sutra. At sixteen, he reflects that he would have studied more esoteric subjects had he known he would come to this world 9 25 28.
For nearly ten years, he has suffered a recurring nightmare of lying in freezing well water while fire, slaughter, and cries fill the night above him. His birth father died, and Wang Qi remembers meeting him only a handful of times before the age of six. His origins remain concealed; Wang Dashan warns that his unusual identity makes public attention dangerous 1 4.
Wang Dashan raises him for ten years in the mountain wilderness. Though not biologically father and son, their bond surpasses that relationship. Dashan teaches him Lesser Yang Qi, practical survival, and martial techniques, but lacks a suitable advanced qi-refining method for him 1 3.
Wang Qi also maintains contact with the spirits of his former wet nurse, Aunt Yun, and her son A Bao. Feeling indebted to them, he recites the Heart Sutra in hopes of helping them pass on 1 23.
Appearance
Wang Qi is approximately 170 centimeters tall at sixteen, noticeably taller than most recruits around him. Years of training have given him a muscular, slightly bulky build, broad shoulders, and exceptionally long arms suited to archery 2 8 10.
- Long, ape-like arms — Nearly reach his knees when hanging naturally 2.
- Honest, guileless face — Contrasts with his imagined appearance as a fierce general or elegant wandering swordsman 2.
- Crimson-gold spiritual manifestation — Ran Jiao briefly sees flame-like currents flowing close to his skin when he rises after out-of-body practice 38.
Personality
Wang Qi values survival over military glory. Following Wang Dashan’s advice, he tries to display only enough talent to secure a safe position, but repeatedly underestimates how exceptional his restrained performances appear to others. He can deliberately act dull, timid, or obedient when it suits him 4 8 10 17.
His fastidiousness overrides his thrift and often drives his cultivation choices. He refuses unboiled drinking water, spends nearly half his private savings on a clean inn rather than sleep among insects, and chooses cleansing spells over additional combat techniques 7 12 15 33.
Curiosity gradually becomes more important to him than the vengeance associated with his concealed origins. He treats cultivation as something to investigate rather than obey unquestioningly, sometimes modifying techniques despite his incomplete knowledge. This independence produces breakthroughs, but also painful symptoms and concern from his instructors 24 25 33 37.
He is compassionate without refusing violence. Encounters with animal spirits deepen his respect for life, and he protects vulnerable villagers even when they oppose him. In combat, however, he uses concealment, repeated volleys, and lethal finishing blows without accepting an enemy’s demands for an “honorable” duel 23 39 43 49 50.
Abilities & Skills
Lesser Yang Qi and True Yang Qi
His foundation is a balanced, gentle Daoist method that can transition into many subsequent cultivation paths 2.
- Rapidly replenishes internal qi and stamina after First Yang Arises 2.
- Regulates circulation to reduce fluid loss during marching 13.
- Converts internal qi into inner force as needed, reinforcing his limbs, sword strikes, and defenses without converting his entire reserve permanently 18 50.
- Uses true yang qi to harm evil spirits and repair physical training damage 29 37.
- Lacks systematic cultivation instruction; experiments initially cause gum pain, a rash, and a persistent runny nose 24 25.
Out-of-Body Cultivation
Wang Qi’s consciousness can leave his sleeping body, pass through physical barriers, and interact with spirits. Early attempts depend heavily on his mental condition and emotional control 5.
- Fear and stray imaginings can produce disturbing visions and leave him exhausted 5.
- Initially remains near his body; later ventures beyond the military camp and returns to his body’s side almost instantaneously 23 29.
- Gains unusually clear, rational thought outside the body, accelerating his understanding of spells 37.
- Directly perceives the channels through which his internal qi flows 37.
- Must conserve mental energy for nighttime practice; Ran Jiao’s apparent ability to sense him makes him reluctant to leave his body beside her 36 42.
Heart Sutra Recitation
The Heart Sutra is a scripture Wang Qi knows from his previous life and believes only he knows in this world. Its recitation reaches spirits, but also attracts unwanted listeners 1 23.
- Recites its heart mantra 108 times during his early nighttime encounters 1.
- Helps hunted animals’ spirits pass on through an expenditure of true yang qi 23.
- Directs beneficial fluctuations toward Aunt Yun and A Bao, causing gloomy energy to leave them and color to return to their forms 36.
- Can exhaust his true yang qi when delivering a large gathering of spirits 23.
Archery
Wang Qi combines rapid shooting, keen senses, and sustained qi reserves. Even when deliberately showing only part of his ability, he exceeds recruitment expectations 8.
- Rapid fire — Shoots approximately two arrows per breath at an eighty-pace target during recruitment, individually drawing each arrow from his quiver 8.
- Linked Arrows — Develops a self-taught three-arrow chain, then learns the orthodox method and uses five-arrow volleys 10 16 20 49.
- Force-Piercing Arrow — Acquires a technique that gathers force to strengthen a shot; finds its straightforward power-gathering approach easier than Qi-Gathering Finger 33 37.
- Low-light vision — Clearly sees birds and fish in conditions where others struggle 10 11 21.
- Sound awareness — Detects a mountain goat at roughly sixty-five paces and dodges ordinary ambush arrows by their sounds 20 31.
- Limits — High-speed shooting can reduce arrow power; his early success against wolves also tempts him into reckless pursuit 6.
Utility Spellcraft
Wang Qi learns spellcasting by examining how incantations guide mental power and use internal qi to move Heaven and Earth Origin Energy. He recognizes that intention—not the pointing finger itself—directs a spell 16 18.
- Water-Cleansing Spell — Learned from Zhao Ji; succeeds on his first attempt and promptly experiments with silent casting and hand gestures 15 17.
- Clothing-Cleansing Spell — Chosen as his first Yulin Shadow Guard reward; eventually cast instantly 33 37.
- Water-Repelling Spell — Also reaches instant casting through out-of-body-assisted practice 37.
- Experimental limits — His instructors warn that abandoning incantations too early could be fatal with a dangerous spell 17.
Light-Concealing Shadow-Masking Spell
A higher-tier concealment spell suited to scouting and hidden support 33.
- Achieves silent casting after half a month of practice, though instant casting remains difficult 37.
- Conceals himself while scaling a guarded compound wall and moving through crowds 44 49.
- Experiments with hiding campfire light; the flames initially disrupt the spell, but expanding its range briefly succeeds 41.
Mighty Stele-Crushing Palm
A forceful palm technique inherited from Wang Dashan, associated with external body conditioning and breaking defenses 29 36.
- Performs prolonged sequences of strikes using his unusually enduring qi reserves 31.
- Uses it in spiritual form to destroy hostile spirits 29.
- Counters Zhong Qi’s final surprise palm strike while simultaneously beheading him 50.
- His early physical strikes lack the explosive force of better-developed external martial artists 31.
Grass-Cutting Saber Technique
An unnamed technique taught during village harvest work, characterized by horizontal cuts and nimble footwork 30.
- Adapts its movements to a reverse-gripped iron sword against Zhong Qi 50.
- Repeatedly attacks the legs, accumulating wounds until his opponent cannot pursue him 50.
- Relies on familiar movements rather than changing forms mid-fight and risking an opening 50.
Qi-Gathering Finger
Initially a basic technique for finger strength and attacks against acupoints and joints 33 37.
- Supports archery through improved finger control 33.
- Its written meridian instructions expose gaps in his anatomical knowledge 37.
- Redesigns its qi circulation and movements until it resembles a more advanced combined internal-external technique; he cannot determine its actual rank 37.
Hunting, Mapping, and Practical Knowledge
- Sets traps, gathers wild food, skins game, cooks, and catches fish with a rope-tethered arrow 3 7 21.
- Produces a detailed mountain map recording terrain, elevations, animals, and plants; it covers substantially more than the scouts’ twenty-li assessment area 34.
- Remembers every officer and recruit in camp from his first day, allowing him to recognize an unfamiliar escort 31.
- Records spoken incantations using simplified characters and phonetic marks 15.
- Applies previous-life fitness knowledge to exercise equipment and corrects Wang Ergou’s lifting form 28 36.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Homemade short hunting bow — His familiar weapon for hunting, rapid volleys, and close-range shooting 3 8 50.
- Standard military war bow — Used for recruitment testing and concealed support at Chen Family Fort 8 47.
- Arrow quivers — Regularly carries several; switches to a fresh twenty-arrow quiver during the fight with Zhong Qi 19 50.
- Self-defense iron sword — Forged by the village smithy and funded by pooled village contributions 7 35.
- Billhook, rope, and hunting necessities — Used for clearing paths and wilderness work; rope also enables arrow fishing 3 21.
- Tent and marching pack — Establishes a private, camouflaged streamside campsite; his full kit weighs approximately eighty jin 35.
- Wooden exercise equipment — Built from previous-life memories for intensive physical conditioning 36.
Relationships
- Wang Dashan — Adoptive father, martial teacher, and survival mentor. Conceals Wang Qi’s identity and urges him to stay out of the limelight 1 4 5.
- Aunt Yun — Former wet nurse and recurring spirit companion. Protects him from gathered shadows; he recites the Heart Sutra to help her 1 23 36.
- A Bao — Aunt Yun’s son and spirit companion. Reminds Wang Qi to complete his dawn practice and enjoys his recitations 1 23.
- Wang Ergou / Wang Er — Fellow villager and former childhood rival. Wang Qi shares his marching burden, advises his training, and suggests the name Wang Er 12 13 28.
- Xu Sanlang — Archer officer who recognizes his potential, takes him hunting, and seeks help when his cultivation appears to go wrong 8 19 24.
- Zhao Ji / Scribe Zhao — Spell instructor and technique adviser. Appreciates Wang Qi’s ingenuity but repeatedly worries about his unconventional experiments 15 17 33.
- Lin Chu / Commandant Lin — Commander who rewards his talent and recruits him into the Yulin Shadow Guard; also finds his repeated chanting disruptive 15 19 32.
- Xu Ping — Scout commander who tests him through an ambush, oversees his transfer, and assigns his partnership with Ran Jiao 31 32 40.
- Ran Jiao — Scouting partner whose reconnaissance, infiltration, and close-range agility complement his archery. She appears able to sense his disembodied consciousness 38 40 50.
- Zhong Qi — Enemy at Chen Family Fort. Wang Qi defeats him with sword strikes, repeated archery, and a final palm counter 49 50.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Enlistment and Divine Archer Battalion Training
- Chooses enlistment rather than flight, refusing to endanger the village chief’s family or spend his entire life in the mountains 4.
- Enters the archer ranks despite attempts to understate his literacy and shooting ability 8 9.
- Becomes the battalion’s first five-man squad leader after shooting waterbirds for supper 10.
- Wins over officers through hunting and cooking, while his spell practice repeatedly disrupts camp 19 21 22.
Cultivation Experiments and Recruitment to the Shadow Guard
- Exhausts his true yang qi helping animal spirits, then experiences greater replenishment and begins unsupervised meridian experiments 23 24.
- Is isolated after developing symptoms mistaken for a dangerous illness; uses the enforced solitude to continue exploring cultivation 25 26 27.
- Ranks first in archery and overall at the military assessment, then survives Xu Ping’s staged ambush 31.
- Accepts recruitment into the Yulin Shadow Guard after asking about benefits and his future assignment 32.
Scout Battalion and Independent Training
- Passes the scouts’ mapping test immediately with his existing mountain survey 34.
- Uses the resulting free time to build a private campsite, train his body, and develop out-of-body-assisted spellcraft 35 36 37.
- Meets his teammates more closely after their attempted test of the newcomer; Ran Jiao’s Demon Race blood broadens his interest in the world 38 39.
Fei County and Chen Family Fort
- Partners with Ran Jiao to locate brigands while minimizing harm to civilians 39 40 43.
- Reconsiders Chen Jingtian’s revolt after learning that land tax has risen to four-tenths to fund the Northern Expedition 46.
- Provides concealed archery support while Ran Jiao holds Chen Jingtian’s parents hostage 47 49.
- Draws Zhong Qi away from the hall, disables his legs, survives a projected saber attack, and kills him after a feigned-death counterattack 48 49 50.
- Returns to the great house with Zhong Qi’s head and exchanges silent approval with Ran Jiao after the remaining outlaws are defeated 50.
