Background / History
Yulin origins
Lin Chu identifies himself as one of the Yulin Orphans, descendants of soldiers who died in service during the conflicts with the Hu people. He credits the emperor with providing for these bereaved families and declares that the Yulin Orphans are willing to serve him unto death 32.
He belongs to the Yulin Shadow Guard, the secret organization established alongside the publicly known Yulin Army. Its responsibilities include monitoring the realm, handling matters beyond ordinary people’s capabilities, and serving the emperor 32.
Raising the Divine Archer Battalion
Under the title of Bandit-Quelling Commandant, Lin recruits troops for an expedition to suppress mountain bandits in Danyang Commandery. His followers include veterans with specialized skills, while the recruiting force places particular emphasis on archers 9.
At the riverside camp, he backs the dismissal of recruits who abandoned their equipment or made others carry it. When disgruntled recruits threaten the officers, he uses a whirlwind to throw them outside the gates. He then appoints the first thirty march finishers as squad leaders and authorizes an additional skill reward for Wang Qi, who already holds that position 14 15.
After observing Wang Qi cultivate outside his crowded tent, Lin orders separate tents for new squad leaders learning qi cultivation. He also asks Zhao Ji to provide enough literacy instruction for them to read their techniques and cultivation formulas 17.
Wang Qi’s spell practice and quarantine
Wang Qi’s repeated spellcasting aggravates Lin’s unusually sensitive perception of spiritual force. Lin orders Xu Sanlang’s hunting party to take the recruit out daily, later forbidding the group from returning before seven in the evening 19 20.
When Wang Qi develops alarming physical symptoms, Lin initially concludes that he has suffered cultivation deviation. He delays the usual discharge because he values the recruit’s talent and worries that the compulsory hunting trips contributed to his rushed nighttime cultivation. After half a month, he visits intending to offer a substantial severance payment, only to find Wang Qi practicing the Mighty Stele-Crushing Palm in good health 27.
Lin accepts Wang Qi’s report of recovery, orders him back to training, and suggests that a strong performance at the Grand Military Review could earn him another assignment 27.
Recruitment into the Shadow Guard
Wang Qi’s first-place archery result and saber demonstration convince Lin to recruit him into his elite force, which numbers fewer than twenty members. Lin recognizes the supposedly simple Grass-Cutting Saber Technique as battlefield blade work intended to sever cavalry horses’ legs 30.
Following a nighttime combat test conducted by Xu Ping and hidden archers, Lin offers Wang Qi access to five techniques. Once Wang Qi agrees to join, Lin reveals his identity and assigns him to Xu Ping’s scout battalion 31 32.
Lin explains that the southern expedition has a classified purpose. He also states that the Divine Archer Battalion will eventually become a mobile bandit-suppression force directly under Chang’an, while Wang Qi will return to the capital with him 32.
Wang Qi’s overnight study of his new skills again disrupts Lin’s sleep. Lin angrily orders Xu Ping to remove him from camp and keep him away for three months 33.
Appearance
- Silver mask: Wears an exquisite silver mask during both public command duties and private recruitment meetings 14 17 31.
- Brocade clothing: Appears in brocade rather than being described in ordinary soldiers’ attire 15 17.
Personality
Lin is generally gentle in his dealings with subordinates, but uncompromising about military discipline. He rewards perseverance, rejects recruits who evade their responsibilities, and keeps his post-march address brief so exhausted soldiers can eat 14 15 20.
His appreciation for talent repeatedly tempers his authority. He adapts camp arrangements to support cultivation, worries that Wang Qi’s reckless spell experiments could kill him, and gives the apparently injured recruit time to recover rather than immediately discharging him 17 27.
His sharp irritability around Wang Qi stems from involuntary vigilance rather than simple dislike: spiritual-force fluctuations make his body enter combat readiness even when he knows the spell is harmless. He also teaches his officers to respect living creatures and hunt only what they need, avoiding indiscriminate slaughter that might offend the harmony of heaven 19 20.
Abilities & Skills
Spiritual-force perception
Lin possesses a rare gift for detecting fluctuations in spiritual force 45.
- Closely tracks Wang Qi’s spell experiments, including silent casting, failed instant casting, and improvised hand seals 17.
- Instinctively becomes combat-ready when he senses spell activity; repeated harmless casting can exhaust his nerves 19.
- Ran Jiao identifies people with his gift as capable of detecting even her encoded, suppressed Wind Whisper Spell 45.
- Xu Ping advises that practicing more than ten li away will be safe. This is a practical precaution, not a confirmed maximum detection range 34.
Wind spellcasting
Lin controls powerful winds through spellcasting 14 19 33.
- Chants briefly and presses his feather fan forward to create a whirlwind that lifts several troublemakers and carries them outside camp 14.
- Sends a command to departing officers through a voice carried on the wind 19.
- Produces a fierce wind toward the concealed scout camp when Wang Qi’s nighttime practice awakens him 33.
Internal qi and cultivation knowledge
Lin’s internal qi feels unimaginably vast to Wang Qi, while his cultivation exerts oppressive pressure on the still-ordinary Wang Ergou 14.
- Recognizes that Wang Qi has trained qi upon meeting him 14.
- Understands the dangers of experimenting with destructive spells before establishing a foundation 17.
- His knowledge is not infallible: he mistakes Wang Qi’s meridian-opening symptoms for cultivation deviation and does not recognize his unconventional progress toward the Lesser Celestial Circuit 27.
Military training and assessment
Lin combines demanding training standards with practical support for recruits 17 18.
- Sets prolonged archery practice sessions for the Divine Archer Battalion 18.
- Uses appointments and access to techniques as rewards for promising soldiers 13 15 32.
- Recognizes the Mighty Stele-Crushing Palm and the anti-cavalry purpose of Wang Qi’s saber technique 27 30.
- Chooses Langya over Mount Tai Commandery for training because Langya offers better food supplies and transport access; the battalion’s consumption could impoverish Mount Tai 42.
Equipment / Items
- Feather fan — Uses it while casting the whirlwind that expels unruly recruits 14.
- Technique catalog — A bundle of bamboo slips listing martial techniques and spells; gives it to Wang Qi to select his five recruitment rewards 32 33.
Relationships
- Wang Qi — Promising recruit whom Lin brings into the Yulin Shadow Guard despite repeated frustration with his spell practice. His concern for Wang Qi’s welfare influences both camp reforms and his handling of the quarantine 17 19 27 32.
- Zhao Ji / Scribe Zhao — Trusted colleague responsible for registration, literacy instruction, and administering technique rewards. Lin addresses him as “Brother Zhao Ji” 15 17 30 32.
- Xu Sanlang — Subordinate company commander ordered to take Wang Qi hunting daily; previously belonged to Lin’s elite force 19 20 30.
- Xu Ping — Detached Division Commandant under Lin who tests Wang Qi and receives him into the scout battalion 31 32.
- The emperor — Object of Lin’s declared loyalty; Lin regards imperial support for the Yulin Orphans as benevolence deserving lifelong service 32.
