Background / History

Titans originate as World-Souls within the cores of promising planets. Unable to reproduce conventionally, they search the universe for other developing World-Souls and reshape planetary environments to support their growth. Despite searching for hundreds of millions of years, they found only a dozen or so members of their kind 365 440 449 450.

On ancient Azeroth, the Titans defeated the Old Gods and their enslaved elemental creatures, imprisoning the two groups separately. Aman'Thul personally tore Y'Shaarj apart. The Titans also established laboratories, planetary machinery, and living constructs to maintain their work after their departure 9 110 222 365 489.

Their servants did not remain united. The Old Gods afflicted titan-forged with the Curse of Flesh, while betrayal and infighting fractured the Keepers. Some mechanical peoples gradually became flesh-and-blood races, including gnomes, dwarves, and humans 14.

Sargeras eventually destroyed the Pantheon. Examining its members' corpses in Antorus, Herad concluded that Sargeras had stabbed most of them from behind before overwhelming the survivors with his demon army 449.

Physiology & Appearance

  • Colossal humanoid bodies: Herad estimates the unfinished Argus the Unmaker at slightly over 200,000 meters tall. A Titan lying down resembles an enormous mountain range 411 451.
  • Stone and metal composition: Titans possess bodies of special stone or metal powered by arcane energy. Their resemblance to arcane golems does not extend to their minds: Titans have genuine souls rather than controlling programs 417.
  • Titan's Heart: An internal energy core serves as their heart. They lack ordinary organs and nerves, making conventional anatomical attacks ineffective 444 446.
  • Soul-metal cores: Examination of the dead Titans establishes that their hearts are made of soul metal. Veteran Titans have larger hearts, and Herad identifies heart size as the determining factor in their strength 450.
  • Exceptional durability: While alive, their bodies are tough enough that even a high-yield hydrogen bomb would only break the surface. Their remains are substantially easier to dismantle 450.
  • Bodiless exception: Watcher Algalon is explicitly described as an incomplete Titan without a physical body, manifesting instead as condensed starlight 456.

Personality & Outlook

The Titans value order and the growth of their race rather than justice as mortals understand it. Their interest in habitable worlds is closely tied to nurturing new Titans. Azeroth receives particularly generous support because its World-Soul has the potential to surpass every existing Titan 364 480.

Their rational approach can be ruthless. World Reforging offers corrupted planets a fresh start but destroys uncorrupted inhabitants alongside the corruption. Herad consequently regards their priorities as selfish and their methods as indifferent to mortal life 406 456.

Despite their intelligence, the Pantheon's members proved vulnerable to betrayal. Herad interprets the condition of their bodies as evidence that they failed to recognize or counter Sargeras's planned attack 449.

Abilities & Skills

Arcane Power and Perception

Titans are embodiments of arcane power capable of observing the world in minute detail. This perception underpins their extraordinary craftsmanship 115.

  • Their individual combat strength is presented as superior to that of other races, including the naaru 411.
  • Battles against Titans are fundamentally contests of energy rather than ordinary weapon damage 417.
  • Even an unfinished Titan can possess overwhelming defenses: Argus's death-energy barrier absorbs a bombardment from more than a hundred Obsidian Warship cannons without a ripple 411.

Planetary Shaping

Titans use powerful artifacts to alter planetary environments and help younger members of their race develop 417.

  • Raise land from the sea or turn plateaus into oceans 417.
  • Manipulate weather and change planetary orbits 417.
  • Destroy planets or employ World Reforging to reset worlds severely corrupted by the Void 417 456.

Artifact Creation

Artifact manufacture forms the foundation of Titan technology. Their creations combine compact size with power that other civilizations may require enormous fleets to reproduce 115 466.

  • Artifact Spirits: A true artifact contains spirituality derived from nature or a trace of its creator's emotion; superior materials influence quality but are not sufficient by themselves 115.
  • Sustained energy: Titan artifacts can function as small, effectively inexhaustible energy sources without regular fuel replacement 483.
  • Combined operation: Mimiron links more than 150 artifacts with four Pillars of Creation to power the Pantheon's Titan Seats 489.
  • Inherited expertise: Titan Keepers and Dragon Aspects possess enough knowledge to manufacture artifacts themselves 115 480.

Creation of Living Constructs

The Titans create genuinely living stone and metal beings, not merely programmed machines 365 494.

  • The first titan-forged were assembled from individually fashioned parts and awakened by activating the materials' spirituality 494.
  • Personally created Keepers inherit traits from their makers, although Titans regard them as tools rather than offspring 449 488.
  • Knowledge can persist through their creations' bloodlines: dwarven smithing, gnomish engineering, and Tol'vir magical expertise survive the Curse of Flesh 374.

Interstellar Travel

Titans can cross space in their physical bodies, but their enormous power does not grant unrestricted teleportation 440.

  • Aman'Thul alone is identified as capable of using powerful spatial magic for rapid travel 440.
  • Sargeras faces journeys lasting years when separated from a destination 440 449.
  • Algalon's incomplete form reaches approximately half the speed of light 456.

Containment and Purification

Titan technology can confine Old Gods, suppress corruption, and enforce planetary security 360 406 452.

  • Old God prisons: Their walls block Herad's earth power and mental probing, while preventing the prisoners from fully escaping 360.
  • Elemental wards: Elementals cannot freely leave confinement, although outside summoning rituals exploit a loophole 9.
  • Void suppression: The runic chest containing Y'Shaarj's heart demonstrates the ability to suppress Void corruption 406.
  • Global purification: The Forge of Origination can devastate Azeroth under the purification protocol 452.
  • Temporal restraint: The Pantheon can immobilize Sargeras through an intense time-stasis effect 490.

Known Titans

Name Role or Distinction
Aman'Thul First Titan and leader of the Titans; uniquely capable of rapid spatial travel. Personally destroyed Y'Shaarj 440 457.
Sargeras Fallen combat Titan who killed the Pantheon and led the Burning Crusade. Ultimately imprisoned outside the prime material plane 449 494.
Aggramar Powerful combat Titan who once fought alongside Sargeras; associated with creating life on Draenor 405 446.
Khaz'goroth Associated with the Hammer of Khaz'goroth, one of the Pillars of Creation 365 489.
Argus the Unmaker Unfinished Titan forcibly transformed by Sargeras; the Burning Legion's second-strongest member 411.

Uldum Climate research center, part of the system guarding C'Thun, and storage site for the planetary purification weapon 222.
Un'Goro Crater Ecological environment laboratory containing Titan structures, including a Permanent Portal 365.
Forge of Origination Executes global purification, returning the affected world toward a barren or chaotic state 452.
Forge of Wills Powerful creation machinery; later used to form Helya's new body 339 494.
Pillars of Creation Exceptionally powerful artifacts representing individual Titans, including the Eye of Aman'Thul, Hammer of Khaz'goroth, Tidestone, and Aegis of Aggramar 489.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Recovery of Titan Knowledge

Herad studies Titan technology through artifacts and surviving installations. The Hammer of Khaz'goroth extends his effective spellcasting range from a little over a kilometer to hundreds of kilometers, while Tol'vir structures provide a substantial body of magical knowledge for his golem's database 365 374.

Dismantling Antorus

After recovering a Titan's Heart, Herad identifies its soul metal as suitable for upgrading Ulthalesh. He subsequently discovers the Pantheon's corpses in Antorus and deploys the Plant Army to dismantle their remains 446 449.

The recovered hearts are melted down and reforged into a roughly two-thousand-meter flying greatsword. This transforms the dead Titans' cores into a weapon intended to kill Sargeras 450 451.

The Pantheon's Final Use

Unable to reliably kill Sargeras because of his regeneration, Herad investigates the Pantheon as a means of imprisonment. Mimiron helps activate four Titan Seats using the Pillars of Creation and a network of lesser artifacts 478 489.

The restored system pulls Sargeras into the Pantheon and immobilizes him. Helya then uses the special dimensional power left by the Titans to enclose him in a separate cage and carry him outside the prime material plane 490 494.
