Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Apprentice Mage 1 His starting rank when memories of another world awaken. Sets goals of becoming an Archmage within five years and reaching Legendary rank within twenty; neither goal is confirmed as achieved in the supplied chapters.
Intermediate Mage 2 Reaches this rank after six months of relentless spell practice and meditation, compared with the usual five to ten years for high elves. Initially conceals his advancement from instructors and classmates.

Background / History

Herad belongs to the prominent Dawnblade family, which produces many warriors but relatively few spellcasters. His magical talent makes him a priority for the family’s support. He grows up among the Windrunners and knows Alleria and Sylvanas from childhood, while Lirath becomes his devoted younger companion 3 5 21 24.

Before transmigrating, Herad was a game programmer who also studied art to a professional game-artist standard. His memories remain dormant until an afternoon fishing with Lirath. Recognizing Azeroth, he remembers the future Orc invasion and Arthas’s destruction of Silvermoon and contamination of the Sunwell. Lirath’s age suggests that he has at least five years before the first catastrophe, prompting him to abandon his leisurely routine and pursue magic at the Moon Temple 1 3.

His access to resources extends beyond personal wealth. The Dawnblade family controls most of the high elven kingdom’s port businesses, including Sunsail Anchorage, allowing him to establish an offshore weapons factory without immediately attracting Council interference 17.

Appearance

  • Build: Describes his arms and legs as scrawny when he first recognizes the dangers facing Quel’Thalas 1.
  • Face: Considered good-looking, though physical attractiveness is commonplace among high elves 9.
  • Clothing: Wears understated blue mage robes during the Spell Tournament, contrasting with other contestants’ more flamboyant colors 7 9.
  • Outside Quel’Thalas: Magic withdrawal leaves him looking sickly, despite remaining capable of normal spellcasting 44.

Personality

Herad is exceptionally disciplined. At the Moon Temple, he trains while his peers socialize, repeatedly exhausting his mana and recovering through meditation. By the tournament, he practices every basic spell at least a thousand times daily. His diligence is driven chiefly by survival rather than prestige, and he treats money as a resource for increasing his strength rather than funding indulgence 2 6 11.

He prefers to conceal his capabilities and act cautiously. He deliberately makes tournament victories look closer than they are, avoids summoning elementals beyond his control, and introduces technological changes gradually because he fears bronze dragon intervention. His pragmatism also shapes his treatment of others: he considers befriending a World Tree more useful than destroying it and restores the clearing after testing his golem 4 5 9 16.

Although usually even-tempered, Herad becomes angry when profit-seeking threatens military preparations. Captain Hank’s unauthorized departure with his warships particularly frustrates him because their battlefield debut is central to his plans 46.

Abilities & Skills

Spellcasting

Herad’s repeated practice gives him unusually fast casting and precise control for an Intermediate Mage 4.

  • Fireball: Has practiced it at least 100,000 times and can cast one in roughly one second, compared with an ordinary mage’s slightly more than two seconds 4.
  • Frostbolt: Demonstrates similarly superior casting speed 4.
  • Arcane Missiles: Can launch two or three missiles simultaneously and sustain a dense barrage capable of overwhelming an opponent’s shield 4 10.
  • Defensive magic: Uses both general-purpose Spell Shield and fire-resistant Flame Shield 6 10.
  • Counterspell: Times an interruption to prevent Carl Deep Shadow from replacing her shattered shield 10.
  • Slow Fall: Enables Little White to glide between hills; the hawkstrider’s apparent flight is not unaided 44.

Golemcraft and Programming

Herad combines magical construction with programming concepts from his previous life. He creates his first Arcane Core while still an Intermediate Mage, although golem-making is normally taught at Advanced Mage rank because of its mana requirements 3.

  • Crystal processing: Completes an Arcane Core across multiple work sessions, locating the unfinished energy node each time he resumes 3.
  • Body shaping: Uses Turn Fossil to Mud to mold granite into a golem body with a complete torso 3.
  • Behavior design: Adds language, emotion, and simple combat routines to his first golem. Its emotional responses are programmed behavior, not proof of self-awareness 4.
  • Control systems: Develops pilot-operated Arcane War Machines and later adds a rule preventing an Arcane Scavenger from indiscriminately absorbing unfamiliar energies 22 45.
  • Early limitations: His first golem relies on basic punches and kicks that skilled Warriors can evade; its crude three-fingered hands also cannot perform fine actions such as pulling a trigger 4 14.

Mana Drain and Energy Research

Using a confiscated Troll Hexxer’s research, Herad reproduces Mana Drain with arcane energy instead of shadow energy 29 30.

  • Extraction: Siphons energy from Magic Crystals and Mana Wyrms through threads extending from a purple orb; the spell can target multiple sources 30.
  • Energy transfer: Feeds energy into a Mana Wyrm, bringing it close to a physical form. Its intelligence does not improve, ending his attempt to develop the creatures into useful magical pets 30.
  • Mana essence: Reduces drained wyrms to dense liquid magical energy. He nearly fills a twenty-liter jar while harvesting wyrms around Eversong Woods 31.
  • Automation: Plans to give Arcane Golems Mana Drain so they can collect energy without requiring him to travel between harvesting sites 31.
  • Holy energy: Studies the Arcane Scavenger’s ability to drain Turalyon. He determines that Turalyon’s incoming holy energy could sustain the machine at full capacity, although Turalyon’s body can use less than one-tenth of that supply 44 45.

Elemental Summoning and Binding

Herad summons an ordinary air elemental and binds it through an Arcane Field inside a mithril puzzle cube 9.

  • Combat support: The elemental fires lightning orbs, manipulates wind, and assists his Arcane Missile barrage 9 10.
  • Physical resistance: Its wind-based body makes physical attacks ineffective 9.
  • Ambush potential: By suppressing its wind and lightning and concealing the cube, it can become invisible to the naked eye before enveloping and shocking an approaching enemy 9.
  • Safety limit: Herad deliberately chooses an ordinary elemental rather than an elite one to avoid losing control of the summoning 9.

Technical and Strategic Knowledge

  • Weapon adaptation: Recognizes that heavy golems can absorb autocannon recoil that flesh-and-blood soldiers cannot safely withstand 14 21.
  • Automatic-weapon concepts: Proposes machine guns and automatic rifles by reducing the scale of existing aircraft autocannons 15.
  • Foreknowledge: Anticipates major threats and prepares specialized weapons, but admits that his memories are not wholly reliable and lack exact dates 6 34 39.
  • Intelligence gathering: Uses scouts and goblin merchant agents to track the Orcs and investigate the Dragonmaw Clan 32 48.
  • Personal limitation: His initial rifle marksmanship is poor; he repeatedly misses a target only twenty meters away 13.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Runed Bag — Stores and transports his full-sized Arcane Golem 4.
  • Enchanted Fishing Rods — Gives one to Lirath when beginning serious magical training and later uses another while traveling. The enchanted hook attracts fish, while the rod and line resist breaking 1 23.
  • Mithril puzzle cube — Binding and command device for his air elemental, built around a purple Magic Crystal. Its materials cost 600 gold coins after a discount 9.
  • First Arcane Golem — A granite construct nearly five meters tall and weighing a little over ten tons. It survives a World Tree’s blow unharmed, crosses rivers along the riverbed, and can shatter large stone blocks with its punches 4.
  • Autocannon-equipped golems — Use their great mass to stabilize weapons with an effective range exceeding two kilometers. The initial test still requires Herad to operate the electrical firing control himself 14.
  • Arcane War Machines — Compact, six-legged vehicles modeled on infantry fighting vehicles. The prototype is roughly sedan-sized, carries seven or eight people in cramped conditions, and provides a mobile autocannon platform 22.
  • Enhanced Arcane War Machine — Mounts a 120 mm smoothbore cannon; anchors the tips of its six mechanical legs in the ground to fire from a stable position 39.
  • Arcane Scavenger — A powerful, intelligent energy-draining war machine costing at least 100,000 gold coins. Herad lends one to Alleria despite warning that its magical energy cannot be replenished in the field 39 44 45.
  • Piercing Explosive Lances — Supplied to Gryphon Riders and Knights against Red Dragons. Falstad tests one against thick steel, and riders subsequently penetrate dragon scales with them 49.
  • Transport assets — Deploys an airship to evacuate Dalaran mages from Karazhan and uses merchant ships, an Ironclad, and a Tank Landing Ship for arms delivery, refugee escort, and troop transport 35 46.

Relationships

  • Lirath Windrunner — Younger companion and loyal follower. Receives Herad’s enchanted fishing rod and helps organize bets on his tournament victories 1 5 7.
  • Sylvanas Windrunner — Childhood acquaintance addressed as “Second Sister,” military collaborator, and recipient of his weapons. Initially underestimates his magic; later kisses his cheek after receiving three Arcane War Machines 6 16 23.
  • Alleria Windrunner — Childhood acquaintance addressed as an elder sister. Tests his Arcane War Machines, seeks Council funding for them, and borrows an Arcane Scavenger for the expedition 21 24 39.
  • Theros Dawnblade — Head of Herad’s family. Hosts a large celebration after his tournament victory and admission to the Royal Academy 11.
  • Rommath — Grand Archmage who gives Herad his Royal Academy admission letter. Shares the problem of powering golems outside Quel’Thalas and later requisitions his mana essence sample 11 16 31.
  • Jindi — Gnome mage, engineering supplier, and business associate. Helps connect Herad with gnomish engineers and acts as his envoy to the Wildhammer Dwarves 12 16 42.
  • Lor’themar Theron — Ranger officer who enthusiastically adopts Herad’s firearms. Accidentally triggers an Arcane War Machine’s electric punishment mode while inspecting it 15 24.
  • Little White — His white hawkstrider mount. Receives a World Tree’s nature gift, develops extraordinary speed, and later glides with Herad’s Slow Fall spell 23 24 44.
  • Turalyon — Reluctant subject of Herad’s holy-energy experiments after repeatedly challenging Alleria’s Arcane Scavenger 44 45.
  • Captain Hank — Goblin captain and highly profitable employee. Earns Herad a fortune in less than two years but angers him by taking essential warships away on another trading run 46.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Spell Tournament

Herad’s concealed advancement makes him an unexpected threat in the annual tournament. After finding himself absent from gamblers’ predicted rankings, he raises 10,000 gold coins and distributes the money among trusted followers to bet on his victories. He then keeps early matches deliberately unremarkable, defeating Kelson Firespeech with Arcane Missiles and conserving his more decisive advantages 5 6 7 8 9.

In the semifinal, he overwhelms Carl Deep Shadow with Arcane Missiles, lightning, and a precisely timed Counterspell. His final opponent forfeits rather than risk the same treatment. The victory earns him admission to the Royal Academy of Magic and leaves him with substantial funds for his next projects 10 11.

Industrialization and the Zul’Aman Campaign

Herad travels to Dalaran, buys 1,000 long-barreled firearms, and demonstrates their usefulness to Sylvanas’s rangers. He sells the first batch at cost to open a market for his planned factory, which Jindi’s recruited gnomish engineers help establish near Sunsail Anchorage 12 14 15 16.

His cautious technological changes nevertheless attract a bronze dragon’s attention. Unseen by Herad, the dragon examines more than two centuries of his life, finds nothing unusual, and abandons its surveillance 16.

During the border offensive, rifle volleys devastate Zul’Aman’s defenders. Demand for heavier weapons grows after autocannon-equipped golems demonstrate their effectiveness, leading Herad to develop vehicles that rangers can operate safely. He completes an initial batch of six Arcane War Machines and delivers three to Sylvanas before visiting Alleria 19 21 22 23.

After Zul’Aman’s destruction, a captured Hexxer’s book reveals methods of consuming Animal Loa power. Herad sends the book and its translation to Silvermoon and warns that Zul’jin could return as a demigod-level enemy 29.

Orc Invasion and Allied Support

Herad follows the developing invasion through intelligence reports, recognizing that the Orcs’ early engagements conceal preparations for a much larger offensive. After Medivh’s death, he arranges the evacuation of Dalaran mages from Karazhan while shipping weapons toward Stormwind 32 34 35.

For the high elven expedition, he prepares cannon-armed Arcane War Machines and lends Alleria an Arcane Scavenger for battlefield testing. He also sends Jindi to locate the Wildhammer Dwarves and encourage their participation in the Allied Forces 39 42.

Countering the Dragonmaw Clan

Herad prepares heavy cannon specifically for living aerial targets, initially withholding their purpose from Alleria. At Southshore, he later shows Allied commanders shattered Red Dragon scales and footage of Arcane War Machines shooting down flying drones. Their limited magical endurance remains a concern 39 48.

As goblin agents investigate the Dragonmaw Clan’s location and formations, Herad identifies the clan controlling the Red Dragon Queen as a priority for destruction. Against the immediate dragon threat, he equips Gryphon Riders and Knights with Piercing Explosive Lances, which prove capable of penetrating the dragons’ scales during the Horde’s attack 48 49.
