Background / History

Early Companionship and Linley’s Heartbreak

Bebe is already living closely with Linley when the brothers prepare to attend Ernst Academy, sleeping on his pillow and accompanying their later travels. In the Magical Beast Mountain Range, he watches their surroundings from Linley’s shoulder 6 10 12.

During Linley’s deteriorating relationship with Alice, Bebe stays beside him and rubs anxiously against his cheek. After the breakup, An entrusts Bebe with watching over Linley on the mountain behind the academy. Bebe remains nearby during the period leading to the creation of Dream Awakening; when Reynolds discovers Linley missing from his original location, Bebe is left squeaking frantically 13 14 15.

Mist Canyon and the Golden Dragon

On the return to Mist Canyon, An selects Bebe to gather Blue Heart Grass because of his small size and speed. Bebe harvests 160 stalks, far more than the few Linley initially considers necessary. He feigns fear to avoid a Velociraptor’s attention, but a Golden-Patterned Python attacks as he leaves. An and Linley cover his escape and carry him out of the canyon 16.

Against the wounded peak eighth-level Golden Dragon, Bebe attacks its injured foreleg while the brothers restrain it. He later diverts its Holy Light Blast by lunging at its head, then delivers the killing blow through its eye socket after An and Linley bring it down. The grass he gathered and the dragon’s blood enable both brothers to awaken as Dragonblood Warriors 17 18.

Revenge and the Flight from Wushan

Bebe participates in the ambush of Duke Paterson, with orders to prevent the duke’s escape. He kills the steward and remaining servants, then helps dispose of the bodies and erase evidence after the interrogation 21 22.

Following Wushan Town’s devastation, Bebe mourns beside Orson’s body. An sends him to locate Yale’s convoy, allowing the survivors to meet the Dawson party and obtain help. When An, Hogg, and Hillman subsequently depart for the O’Brien Empire, Bebe accompanies Linley south to train in the Magical Beast Mountain Range 25 27.

Saint-Level Return and Dragon Valley

Seven years later, Bebe returns with Linley to Chiyan City as a Saint-level magical beast, greeting An in human speech. He later joins An, Linley, and Barker in Dragon Valley, where he outmaneuvers a Saint-level Thunder Dragon and covers it with claw wounds. The expedition secures the dragons’ agreement to provide fresh blood for future Baruch Clan awakenings 29 36 37.

Baruch Empire and the Necropolis Gathering

Bebe is among the Saint-level allies Linley brings to the Magic Crystal Ore Vein during the confrontation with the Radiant Church and Dark Church 45.

At Beyrut’s castle, Bebe enters freely despite the residence’s defenses against unauthorized visitors. He asks “Grandpa Beyrut” to admit Barker to the Necropolis of the Gods expedition and returns with permission, enabling Barker to join Linley’s group 50.

Appearance

  • Black fur and small, jet-black eyes: His compact appearance leads a Velociraptor to dismiss him as an ordinary, low-level Black Shadow Mouse 16 36.
  • Variable size: His usual body length is approximately twenty centimeters; he can enlarge to nearly half a meter or roughly one meter, then shrink again 16.
  • Sharp claws and teeth: His claws gouge tree bark and dragon flesh, while his teeth can tear open an existing dragon wound 17 18 37.
  • Usual perch: Frequently rides on Linley’s shoulder or shelters inside his clothing and arms 10 16 21.

Personality

Bebe is affectionate and protective toward Linley. He visibly worries over Linley’s heartbreak, stays beside him during his withdrawal, and becomes furious when enemies threaten the brothers. His sorrow beside Orson’s body also shows his attachment to the people around them 13 14 19 25.

He is proud, playful, and opportunistic. He gathers every stalk of Blue Heart Grass he can carry, boasts about his haul, and deliberately acts frightened to mislead a larger beast. He teases An about his golden Dragon Transformation and complains when both brothers gain wings while he still cannot fly 16 18.

In battle, Bebe can be ruthless, killing Paterson’s servants during the ambush. His confidence is not entirely reckless: when asked whether An can defeat Fain, he acknowledges both fighters’ strength and refuses to assume a winner 22 49.

Abilities & Skills

Exceptional Speed

  • Before his documented Saint-level advancement, An states that Bebe is faster than an eighth-level magical beast 16.
  • Uses rapid movement for harvesting, surprise attacks, and striking exposed wounds 16 17.
  • At Saint level, evades the Thunder Dragon’s electrical net and tail attacks, then changes direction sharply to dodge its lightning breath 37.
  • Speed does not make him untouchable: the Golden-Patterned Python nearly catches him, requiring An’s intervention 16.

Size Alteration

  • Enlarges from approximately twenty centimeters to nearly one meter 16.
  • Uses his larger form to carry the harvested Blue Heart Grass and attack the Golden Dragon’s head 16 18.
  • Retains a small form suitable for riding on Linley’s shoulder and remaining inconspicuous 16 21.

Claws, Teeth, and Physical Defense

  • An identifies speed and defense as Bebe’s principal combat strengths 17.
  • Tears open the Golden Dragon’s wounded foreleg with his teeth and survives being flung into a tree 17.
  • Kills the weakened Golden Dragon by driving his foreclaws into its eye socket 18.
  • Scratches the Saint-level Thunder Dragon’s nose and leaves claw marks across its scales 37.

Communication

  • Uses Soul Transmission to report his harvest, comment on the brothers’ transformations, and relay Beyrut’s permission 16 18 50.
  • Communicates through squeaks, nods, and gestures before his human speech is demonstrated 14 17.
  • Speaks in a human voice after becoming a Saint-level magical beast 29 36.

Flight

  • Cannot fly during the brothers’ first Dragonblood transformations and openly complains about it 18.
  • Demonstrates independent flight upon his Saint-level return and later flies into Beyrut’s castle 29 50.

Relationships

  • Linley Baruch — His closest companion, whom he addresses as “Boss.” Bebe accompanies Linley through emotional crises, training journeys, and combat 13 14 27 36 50.
  • An Baruch — Trusted friend and combat partner. An entrusts him with Linley’s safety, directs his battlefield assignments, and praises his Blue Heart Grass harvest 14 16 17 29.
  • Beyrut — Calls him “Grandpa Beyrut” and enjoys privileged access to his defended castle. Beyrut grants Bebe’s request to include Barker in the expedition 50.
  • Barker — Fellow participant in the Dragon Valley expedition; Bebe later obtains permission for him to enter the Necropolis of the Gods 36 37 50.
  • Haeru — Fellow companion who chooses, alongside Bebe, to remain with the brothers rather than leave the Yulan Plane 35.
