  • Aptitude restrictions: The Xu Household’s initial applicants are rejected as unsuitable even for outer-sect menial service 10.

  • Policy disputes: Demonic attacks divide leaders between advocates of a forceful purge and those urging restraint to avoid a larger war 25.
  • Rival scrutiny: Other factions monitor the Azure Mystery Sect’s expansion, while some senior figures object to Xu Xuan’s overt control of mortal kingdoms 92.

Cultivation and Resources

Wood-Element Specialization

The sect excels in wood-element cultivation and spiritual herb production 10.

  • Its medicinal gardens maintain extensive herb illustrations and historical management notes 23.
  • The Greenwood Dragon-Binding Art manifests tough vines that bind an opponent. Its effectiveness varies greatly with the practitioner’s cultivation 121.
  • Sect identity tokens carry distinctive spiritual light and Dao resonance associated with its tradition 37.

Spiritual Agriculture

  • Herb production: Medicinal gardens supply resources whose importance increases during conflict with the Profound Sword Gate 23.
  • Cultivation experiments: Manager Zhao authorizes Xu Xuan to test companion planting with wound-healing grass and mind-calming flowers 23.
  • Improved Jade Marrow Rice: Xu Xuan develops a strain resistant to drought and insects, with a growth cycle thirty percent shorter and twice the yield. The sect distributes seeds and cultivation methods to affiliated lineages and friendly forces 32.
  • Wartime stockpiles: Purchases include formation-building ores, bloodstaunching vine for healing pills, and adamantine sand for repairing and reinforcing formations 27 30.
  • Emergency procurement: During an escalation, the sect and Profound Sword Gate issue purchase orders fifty percent above market prices 32.

Support for Higher Cultivation

  • Purple Mansion preparations: Zhou Yongchang cites a Tribulation-Averting Grand Formation, guardian elders, and the accumulated insights of earlier Purple Mansion cultivators as advantages of advancing within the sect 81.
  • Restricted resources: Access to rare cultivation materials depends heavily on contributions and backing; ordinary outer disciples have little chance of obtaining precious qi of heaven and earth 27.
  • Pine Crane resources: Zhou Yongchang provides Xu Xuan with Longevity Wood, allowing him to condense a Greenwood spirit body. The gift later proves inseparable from the scheme to seize his Dao foundation 94 96 98 100.

History

Early Connections with the Xu Household

The Xu Household initially sought entry through the sect’s regular recruitment system, but its juniors lacked the required aptitude. Xu Xuan instead secured vassalage under outer-sect steward Yuan Qiu, placing one hundred clansmen in Hundred Fragrance Valley to cultivate five hundred mu of fields 10.

In a later life, Xu Xuan lived as Wang Tong and used his ability with spiritual plants to attract Li Jiangping’s attention. After treating diseased Heart-Clearing Grass and diagnosing problems in Jade Marrow Rice fields, he obtained a recommendation and entered a peripheral medicinal garden 15 16 17.

His growing influence enabled Xu An, Xu Ping, and Xu Shun to join the garden. The resulting network carried resources and cultivation knowledge back to the Xu Household, while later generations continued entering sect institutions 23 43 49.

Border Conflict and Demonic Attacks

Competition with the neighboring Profound Sword Gate intensified over mineral resources. An early clash over a small spirit stone vein caused deaths on both sides, increasing the importance of agricultural supplies and wartime procurement 18 23 27 30.

The sect also faced sinister markings, an attack on a refined iron mine, and infiltration targeting a herb storehouse. Its leadership disagreed over how aggressively to respond, though the Steward Hall eventually issued a demon-suppression order with substantial rewards 25 26 28.

The conflict with Profound Sword Gate developed into a major war in Liyang Kingdom. Fighting over a high-grade spirit stone vein drew Foundation Establishment elders into combat, but neither side had secured victory by the time of Xu Xuan’s sixtieth-year dynastic anniversary 56 57 80.

Expansion into the Southern Wilds

The sect established numerous frontier outposts and offered long-term missions to map the Southern Wilds and identify resource sites 27 36.

Xu Xuan used its authority to protect the newly settled Lingyan Xu Lineage. His genuine inspector’s token first compelled Xiao Yuanshan to withdraw; Elder Zhou’s subsequent intervention forced the Xiao Household to abandon its tribute demands 37 38.

Patronage of Xu Chen

When Xu Xuan reincarnated as Xu Chen, an inherited Inner Sect Disciple Token protected him during a confrontation with the Yue imperial court. Zhou Yongchang subsequently authenticated its connection to the Lingyan Xu Lineage and established Xu Chen as his personal disciple and inspector 56 58.

Zhou later attended Xu Xuan’s Foundation Establishment ceremony on the sect’s behalf, pledged protection to his kingdom, and supplied the Dragon-Patterned Black Gold Spear 73 74.

Yan Kingdom Branch

Zhou Yongchang recruited Xu Xuan as a Foundation Establishment elder and arranged a thirty-year State Preceptor posting in Yan Kingdom. His assignment included investigating an ancient cult and a suspected demonic artifact 81.

Xu Xuan founded the Azure Mystery Sect as the Azure Wood Sect’s branch, asserted authority over Yan Kingdom’s cultivation world, and extended that authority into the Kingdom of Wu. He also forced the Lin Clan to accept a branch on Spirit Rock Mountain 82 83 84 86.

The branch expanded substantially during his tenure, attracting rogue cultivators and members of smaller lineages. Its growth brought scrutiny from neighboring powers and rival Azure Wood Sect factions. At the end of thirty years, a newly appointed Foundation Establishment elder replaced him 92.

Dao-Foundation Seizure and Aftermath

After returning, Xu Xuan discovered that the five-elements path promoted by Zhou Yongchang could not reliably reach Purple Mansion because the world’s elemental source streams were damaged. Further investigation revealed the Zhou Lineage’s interest in methods that stole another cultivator’s perfected Dao foundation 96.

Zhou ultimately admitted that his patronage had been intended to prepare Xu Xuan for harvesting. He absorbed Xu Xuan’s Dao foundation, but the Longevity Wood escaped through Xu Xuan’s Greenwood Spirit Body 98 100.

The Azure Wood Sect declared Xu Chen a traitor who had practiced the Blood Baleful Demon Art. The Great Xu Kingdom and Xu Lineage were crushed by their enemies, with survivors fleeing overseas, toward Profound Sword Gate, or into hiding 100.

More than two hundred years later, the sect remained powerful. Reports identified Zhou Yongchang as Purple Firmament Peak’s master and suggested he had reached mid-stage Purple Mansion. The sect continued seeking wood-aspect treasures, which Xu Xuan suspected was part of the search for Longevity Wood 107.
