Wartime Service and Reassignment

Mikoto handled logistics during the Second Shinobi World War and never served on the front lines. Her former instructor suffered injuries in an accident at the front that ended their ninja career, causing the team to disband. She subsequently joined Qianye Lan and Kushina under Hatake Sakumo 17.

Although she had graduated well before her new teammates, wartime conditions had prevented the village from holding Chunin Exams, delaying her opportunity for promotion 33.

Early Team 8 Missions

Team 8 spent roughly a month completing dozens of D-rank assignments before receiving a C-rank merchant escort. During a field-tilling assignment, Mikoto tired much more quickly than Lan and Kushina, whose Uzumaki constitutions gave them greater endurance 19.

On later assignments, she rushed to support Kushina against bandits and defeated two herself. She also accompanied Sakumo when he sold the bandits’ stolen goods on the black market; the proceeds and money taken from subsequent attackers were divided equally among the four team members 27 28.

During a border patrol, Mikoto fought a Sunagakure Anbu operative alongside her teammates. Her Fire Release combined with Lan’s Wind Release for their opening attack, after which she maintained pressure with ranged ninjutsu while Lan fought at close quarters 29 30.

Chunin Exams

After passing the written round, Mikoto accompanied her teammates into the Forest of Death. They followed Lan’s plan to wait near the central tower and ambush exhausted teams carrying the scrolls they needed 35 36.

In the tournament, Mikoto faced Dekai, whose Water Release blocked her Great Fireball Technique. She exploited his mistaken belief that meeting her Two-Tomoe Sharingan would expose him to genjutsu, using his lowered gaze to conceal a wire-and-shuriken trap. Rejecting Fugaku

Mikoto asked Lan to pose as someone close to her to discourage Uchiha Fugaku, who kept pursuing her with encouragement from her family’s elders. After explaining the plan to Kushina, the pair walked together outside the Uchiha compound, where Fugaku confronted them 43 44.

When Fugaku dismissed their relationship as an act, Mikoto kissed Lan. She also angrily rejected Fugaku’s attempt to make her future depend on the outcome of a duel, insisting that the choice was hers alone. Lan accepted Fugaku’s taijutsu challenge and defeated him 44.

Mikoto kissed Lan again after the fight, then returned home flustered and unsure how to face Kushina. Shizuka interpreted her behavior as genuine romantic interest, and Sosuke subsequently told Fugaku’s father to abandon the proposed pairing 45 46.

First A-Rank Escort

Following the team’s promotion, Sakumo selected an A-rank assignment escorting medical personnel, equipment, and supplies to a border medical station. Mikoto received her own mission scroll and joined the convoy at Konoha Hospital. Sakumo assigned her reconnaissance duties, with Lan supporting her and Kushina guarding the medical staff 48 49.

Her warmth does not prevent her from acting decisively in battle. She remains composed when Dekai counters her Fire Release and turns his fear of the Sharingan into a tactical advantage. She is also protective of her teammates, rushing to help Kushina when she fears the bandits will outnumber her 27 39.

Mikoto strongly resists being treated as someone whose romantic future others can decide. She openly rebukes Fugaku’s possessiveness, despite normally showing little anger around Lan 44. Her own growing attraction to Lan leaves her more conflicted: she hides their hand-holding from Kushina, feels guilty about the secrecy, and later experiences jealousy when she sees Kushina resting against him 48 49.
