Background

Qiao Lun was born into the Zenin Clan and trained as a jujutsu sorcerer. The clan’s dangerous internal environment helped shape his determination to become stronger. His experience included fighting Cursed Spirits and sparring with Maki Zenin and Naoya Zenin 3 10 19.

He awakens in the Hunter world at an auction venue. Already familiar with that world through its manga, he uses his knowledge to identify people, anticipate events, and seek suitable teachers. He conceals the source of this information, telling Kurapika only that he was teleported there 1 20 28 52.

His unexplained arrival leaves him without a documented local identity. Kurapika arranges identification for him, though Qiao Lun recognizes that a thorough investigation could expose the missing records of his early life 20 27.

Appearance

• Build: Tall and slender, with a muscular physique and eight-pack abdominal muscles 46 51.
• Hair: Soft, pale blond 51.
• Face: Delicate features and narrow, foxlike eyes that tilt upward at the corners; his faint smile does not always reach his eyes 51.
• Accessories and clothing: A metal stud in his left ear and tailored, loose black clothing. Earlier outfits include his Jujutsu High uniform and a locally purchased replacement 28 51.
• Bearing: Graceful and composed enough to be mistaken for a pampered young nobleman, despite his brutality in combat 28 45.

Personality

Qiao Lun’s underlying priority is security. Crossing worlds and growing up within the Zenin Clan leave him unwilling to ignore threats: if he cannot eliminate an enemy immediately, he prefers to withdraw and return when he can. His conflict with the Phantom Troupe begins because its members pursue him after he attempts to leave the auction 4 6 19.

He enjoys testing himself against strong opponents, sometimes choosing their specialty as the field in which to defeat them. Against Uvogin, he deliberately shifts into close combat; against Razor, he becomes so absorbed that he briefly forgets their fight carries no personal enmity. Nevertheless, he can restrain himself or retreat when circumstances demand it 10 72 117 147.

Although often aloof, he responds to sincerity with trust. He stops guarding himself against Biscuit once she earns his confidence, respects Feitan’s decision not to pursue intensive training, and takes responsibility for protecting people he brings into dangerous situations 46 56 117.

His pragmatism also makes him ruthless. He rejects the idea of forgiving Genthru merely because the Bomber cares about his companions, and he routinely finishes enemies rather than leaving them wounded and capable of returning 61 89 117.

Ten Shadows Technique

An inherited Zenin technique that summons shikigami through shadows. Qiao Lun describes it as a family inheritance with more than a thousand years of history 21 75.

• Shadow Space: Stores objects and bodies, conceals Qiao Lun, and provides routes for surprise attacks. Stored weight is added to his own body 10 19 21.
• Summoning cost: Shikigami are sustained by Cursed Energy rather than Emission Nen 22.
• Environmental weakness: Dust that prevents distinct shadows from forming, or the removal of light sources, can obstruct his shadow-dependent techniques 10 82.

Shadow Cursed Technique

Qiao Lun’s shadow-related Specialization lets him treat shadows as tangible objects. He names the shadow-pulling ability Shadow Cursed Technique 57 76.

• Shadow extraction: Tears a person’s shadow free without necessarily restricting their movement or Nen immediately 65 66.
• Shadow Curtain: Lifts a shadow into a flexible barrier that blocks, redirects, or entangles attacks 68 69.
• Distortion: Twisting a shadow can injure the corresponding body part; he uses this against Genthru’s arm and Youpi 65 154.
• Spatial access: His own lifted shadow remains an entrance to Shadow Space and can open at will 154.
• Defensive limit: The curtain is not invulnerable. Kelo’s conjured axe develops a toothed mouth capable of biting and tearing it 144.

Shadow Eater and Fusion

Fusion is the core property Qiao Lun discovers behind his Specialization. Extracted shadows can merge with objects or his body, while shikigami fusion lets him directly acquire their traits 66 69 70.

• Weapon fusion: Genthru’s shadow gives his cursed longsword access to Little Flower 66.
• Shikigami fusion: The Divine Dogs provide claws; Max Elephant provides physical power and water-aspected Cursed Energy; Tiger Funeral provides powerful paws and hooked claws 70 83 154.
• Borrowed Nen abilities: Demonstrated examples include Phinks’s Revolving Sky, Knov’s Window Maker, Shizuku’s Blinky, and Netero’s 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva 123 160 162 163.
• Physical limits: His body initially tolerates only the two Divine Dogs together. Greater stacking requires improved conditioning and familiarity with fusion 70.

Black Flash

A critical strike produced when the physical impact and release of Cursed Energy occur less than 0.000001 seconds apart. The resulting black lightning raises the attack’s power to the power of 2.5 11.

• Breaks through Uvogin’s defenses and later destroys Shalnark’s chest and Autopilot antenna 11 38.
• Produces a heightened state of clarity in which Cursed Energy control becomes instinctive; insights gained during that state remain after it fades 11 15.
• Also improves Qiao Lun’s understanding of Nen and contributes to increased aura reserves 21 50.
• Cannot be consistently activated at will. Later, maintaining consecutive Black Flashes becomes easier for him, but triggering the first remains difficult 11 88.

Nen Control and Perception

His prior Cursed Energy training transfers unusually well to Nen, allowing rapid improvement under Biscuit 4 55 56.

• Ten, Ren, and Gyo: Establishes basic aura control immediately after awakening and detects Machi’s hidden threads 4.
• Ko, Ken, and Ryu: Uses advanced aura concentration, sustained defense, and redistribution in combat 50 56 69.
• En: Extends his senses five meters around himself; Biscuit considers it capable of further growth 80.

• Gon and Killua — Traveling and training companions. Their participation in his aura-reserve training makes them stronger than their manga counterparts at the same point 59 92 116.
• Feitan — Qiao Lun rescues him at the auction. Initial caution toward his advances later gives way to an intimate relationship; Qiao Lun recommends working for Kurapika for greater safety 3 17 46.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Yorknew City

After awakening Nen during the auction conflict, Qiao Lun turns the Troupe’s pursuit into a counterattack. Round Deer’s healing enables him to overpower Uvogin with Black Flash, while Max Elephant’s water later exposes Nobunaga’s defensive weakness and creates an opening for a killing slash 4 10 11 24.

He arranges Hisoka’s opportunity to fight Chrollo, then guards the restaurant with his Divine Dogs so neither combatant can escape. As other Troupe members converge, he intercepts them and kills Shalnark with a third consecutive Black Flash 18 34 38.

Rather than join the Nostrade Family, he finances Kurapika’s independent rise in Yorknew. Their agreement converts his mafia earnings into a continuing source of intelligence, resources, and shared profits 44.

Greed Island and Battera’s Castle

Qiao Lun enters Greed Island both to train and to draw the surviving Troupe into another confrontation. He recruits Biscuit, discovers the fusion property of his shadow ability, defeats Razor, and subjugates Piercing Ox 50 53 66 72 75.

Chrollo instead maneuvers him toward a battle at Battera’s Castle. Qiao Lun finds slaughtered staff and a gravely wounded Sabazushi, then faces an ambush involving teleportation, darkness, defensive barriers, and several Troupe members 78 80 82 83.

He also joins Gon’s team against Razor’s pirates. Their dodgeball victory is followed by Round Deer healing the players and Hisoka attacking after Qiao Lun refuses a duel 92.

Chimera Ant Extermination

Qiao Lun accompanies Gon and Killua to Kite, intending to protect him and prevent the Chimera Ant crisis from following the manga’s course. He joins the NGL investigation and demonstrates Nue’s Complete Form against a Squadron Leader’s forces 94 107 111 118.

His efforts to eliminate the Queen and Meruem fail when Colt sacrifices himself to protect them. Rather than release Mahoraga, Qiao Lun chooses to concentrate on Youpi and later plans to face that Royal Guard alone 123 134.

During the palace invasion, he carries Youpi outside to clear the team’s route, removes his shadow, and combines Shadow Curtain attacks with shikigami fusion. Against Meruem, he coordinates Shadow Space, Max Elephant, Piercing Ox, Tiger Funeral, and Blinky to secure victory 151 154 160 162 164.

The victory does not end Meruem’s movement: post-mortem Nen continues driving him toward Komugi. Unable to eliminate that manifestation, Qiao Lun acknowledges his limit and leaves the next step to Neferpitou and the others 163.

Election Period

During the Hunter Association’s election proceedings, Qiao Lun spars with Gansaku. The Divine Dogs’ combined attacks force an end to the match and lead Gansaku to reconsider the strength of the Chimera Ants Qiao Lun had fought 168 169.

He subsequently maintains contact with Pariston as a possible route to information about Beyond and Kakin’s coming affairs 170.
