Background / History

Xia Yan is a modern-world transmigrator familiar with the Naruto storyline. His parents in this world died fighting in the Second Shinobi World War, after which a Senju elder raised him. The elder repeatedly urged him to work toward the clan’s resurgence, despite the Senju having largely dispersed into Konoha’s civilian population and abandoned their surname 1.

At the Ninja Academy, Xia Yan attended the same class as Kakashi Hatake and Obito Uchiha. Recognizing their names convinced him that major future conflicts were unavoidable. He deliberately maintained above-average but inconspicuous grades, hoping to avoid being selected for early battlefield service without appearing useless 1 3.

His attempts to obtain a safer administrative or Academy position were rejected. Instead, his guardian used the clan’s connections to place him in the Anbu at eight. Over the following five years, Xia Yan became a squad leader and carried out at least fifty missions involving the elimination of enemy spies. Despite that experience, he had never participated in large-scale warfare 1 2 3 26.

His service also concealed a second responsibility: investigating the Anbu and reporting its activities to his clan. Although he resented this obligation and felt limited personal attachment to the Senju, he acknowledged that their protection, training, and ninjutsu resources had enabled his survival 9 31.

Appearance

• Hair and face: Handsome, with silver-white hair inherited from Tobirama Senju’s line 1 48.
• Eyes: Brown; he remarks that black eyes and a mask would make him resemble Kakashi 1.
• Anbu attire: Wears an Anbu uniform and mask while on duty 2.
• Sage Mode marking: Red eyeshadow appears during Sage Mode and disappears when he deactivates it 24.
• Personal preference: Prefers the black hair he had in his previous life, considering white hair conspicuous during nighttime stealth missions, but has not dyed it 48.

Personality

Xia Yan deliberately presents himself as gentle, humble, dependable, and committed to Konoha. He models this public image on the First and Fourth Hokage, combining friendliness with strength and firmness when necessary. Maintaining it for years has made his courteous smile habitual and earned the trust of classmates and subordinates 9 12 35.

Privately, he is calculating and strongly concerned with survival. His familiarity with future events influences whom he befriends, which political opportunities he pursues, and which enemies he avoids. He initially cultivates Kakashi partly because of Kakashi’s connections to Minato and the future savior, while also taking deliberate steps to address his grief 3 9 16.

His mission judgment can be ruthless. He has abandoned teammates to complete assignments, receiving promotion rather than punishment for his decisiveness. He avoids personally killing troublesome recruits but admits that he would not necessarily risk himself to rescue them 15 44.

Despite relying heavily on his cheat, Xia Yan does not regard himself as a natural genius. He continues basic training because possessing and controlling power does not automatically mean using it efficiently in combat. Conserving chakra is a particular focus of his practice 14 33.

Abilities & Skills

Plant-Based System and Senju Secret Technique

His cheat converts special attributes extracted from plant life force into seeds. Seeds grow by consuming his chakra; their mature fruits grant corresponding abilities when eaten 1.

• Extraction: Uses the Senju Secret Technique to drain a plant’s life force. Extracting the Wind Release seed leaves its source tree withered and lifeless 25.
• Mastery: Fruits provide complete command of their associated abilities. He also states that once he successfully performs a jutsu in full, his cheat allows him to essentially master it 1 13.
• Detection: The system alerts him to previously uncollected seed types or higher-grade versions of known seeds 24.
• Cultivation capacity: His capacity increased from two seeds to four and eventually eight, but excessive planting consumed too much chakra and slowed growth 17.
• Storage: Extracted seeds can be kept outside his body until he has sufficient chakra to cultivate them 25.
• Uncertain rules: He does not understand what determines a plant’s extractable attributes. Growing ordinary descendants of previously useful trees failed to reproduce their special seeds 25.

Sage Mode

His elementary Sage Mode is independent of the Three Great Sage Lands. It raises his chakra quality, physical capabilities, sensory perception, and resistance to genjutsu 2 23.

• Raises his combat strength to Elite Jonin level during the fight with Yashamaru 23.
• Makes his movements difficult for Kakashi’s Sharingan to track 23.
• Detects the foreign chakra accumulating on his ninja blade, allowing him to anticipate Yashamaru’s Magnet Release trap 23 24.
• Does not establish that he has reached near-Kage strength; the narration explicitly places him below it 23.

Speed, Taijutsu, and Blade Combat

Years of basic attribute fruits give Xia Yan exceptional movement speed, reflexes, coordination, and strength. His fighting style emphasizes simple, direct attacks rather than elaborate movements 7 37.

• Combines Body Flicker with rapid blade attacks to kill enemies before they can react 20.
• Outpaces Kakashi’s physical responses even when the Sharingan can perceive his movements 36 37.
• Severs the black threads attached to Kakuzu’s detached fist, though he cannot cut through Kakuzu’s hardened defense 6 7.
• Uses taijutsu as his primary means of defeating Yashamaru, conserving the chakra that additional ninjutsu would require 24.

Water Release

Water Release is his most frequently demonstrated elemental specialty. Intermediate fruits underpin his control, and several of his techniques are associated with Tobirama Senju 7 17 38.

Earth Release

His Earth Release, like his Water Release, was developed through intermediate fruits. Revealing it during their spar surprises Kakashi, who had previously seen only his Water Release 17 37.

• Earth Release: Earth and Stone Dragon: Forms a large dragon from earth and stone and sends it against Kakashi’s Earth-Style Wall 37.

Sensory Perception

Xia Yan possesses strong sensory abilities even outside the explicitly described Sage Mode enhancement 19.

• Detects distant combat through chakra fluctuations 19.
• Locates concealed enemies and warns Kakashi through covert hand signals 21 22.
• Tracks Kakashi after substitution and recognizes that ordinary concealment will not evade his senses 37.
• Detects chakra-bearing insects following him and identifies their watcher as Aburame Ryoma 28.

Chakra Recovery and Limitations

His principal weakness is low usable chakra, caused by the demands of his growing seeds rather than a lack of overall combat ability 1 17.

• Extended ninjutsu use can leave him nearly depleted after a single engagement 20 22.
• His recovery is unusually fast: he restores approximately 70% of his chakra within a few minutes without Soldier Pills 22.
• He compensates through economical attacks, taijutsu, deception, and rapid finishes 24 33.

Sealing Jutsu and Flying Thunder God Study

Xia Yan receives a Flying Thunder God scroll through Uesugi Gen, memorizes it, and burns it. Its sealing requirements become the main obstacle to his training 12 13.

• Previously attempted sealing jutsu as a child without much success 13.
• Secures Minato’s personal instruction by offering intelligence about Konoha’s internal affairs 42 48.
• Studies sealing jutsu and Flying Thunder God fundamentals for three days under Minato’s strict guidance 50.

• Minato Namikaze — Fourth Hokage, intelligence partner, and instructor. Their cooperation begins with mutual caution; Minato’s verification of Xia Yan’s information increases his trust, and he eventually expresses willingness to become his formal teacher if circumstances permit 42 43 48 50.
• Senju elder — Unnamed guardian who raised him, arranged his Anbu placement, and receives his reports. Xia Yan dislikes the elder’s fixation on restoring the clan but remains grateful for his upbringing 1 10 31.
• Uesugi Gen — Brings him the clan’s Flying Thunder God scroll 12.
• Uchiha Sora — Former deskmate. They reunite at a training ground, where he conceals his Anbu work and encourages her ambition to enter the Medical Department. Witnessing his spar with Kakashi overturns her impression that he lacks access to strong ninjutsu 32 33 38.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Kakashi’s Assignment and the Kakuzu Encounter

Kakashi joins Xia Yan on a mission to retrieve the body of the spy Kashiwagi Sen. Finding Kakuzu already in possession of the corpse, Xia Yan first attempts negotiation, then coordinates with Kakashi when fighting becomes unavoidable. He considers Kakuzu beyond their ability to defeat and prioritizes recovering the body or obtaining an opportunity to retreat 3 5 6.

After returning, Xia Yan uses Kakashi’s report to alert Minato indirectly to interference in the Anbu. He also begins treating Kakashi’s assignment as an opportunity to expand his influence 9 11.

Observation Post Attack and Yashamaru’s Capture

Xia Yan and Kakashi reinforce a Konoha observation post under attack by Sand ninja disguised as Stone ninja. Xia Yan’s speed and Water Release overwhelm most of the attackers; he preserves survivors for interrogation and detects an additional concealed enemy 19 20 21.

That enemy is Yashamaru. Xia Yan activates Sage Mode, recognizes the Magnet Release trap laid on his blade, and substitutes a clone before counterattacking. He captures Yashamaru alive because his Anbu knowledge and connection to the Fourth Kazekage make him particularly valuable 23 24.

Root Laboratory Discovery

Returning to Konoha, Xia Yan and Kakashi encounter Root personnel guarding a basement. Xia Yan defuses the confrontation through carefully ambiguous assurances, detects Ryoma’s surveillance, and suspects a laboratory connected to Root and Orochimaru. Minato later considers the possibility of human experimentation and resolves to investigate 28 34.

Alliance with the Fourth Hokage

Minato initially summons Xia Yan to thank him for helping Kakashi. Their later private discussions become an exchange: Xia Yan offers information about the Anbu and Konoha’s internal politics, while Minato agrees to teach him Flying Thunder God 39 42.

Xia Yan subsequently supplies a report identifying suspected Third Hokage loyalists and another captain with an unknown allegiance. Minato verifies portions of the intelligence and begins teaching him sealing jutsu, leading to the detection of a basic sealing-type seed 48 50.

Goals and Planned Development

• Become Hokage: Publicly frames his ambition around protecting Konoha and privately regards his Senju background as an advantage in pursuing the position 12 45.
• Complete his system mission: Become the “True Big Boss of the Shinobi World”; progress is listed at 1% in his opening status 1.
• Recruit talented allies: Seeks promising people while remaining wary of the Uchiha’s political situation and the influence of village ideology on potential recruits such as Shisui and Itachi 11 12.
• Investigate the Ryūmyaku: Identifies the chakra source in Rōran as a possible answer to his reserves problem, but postpones pursuit until he has sufficient strength, sealing knowledge, and a workable plan 45 46.
• Develop all chakra natures: Considers eventually pursuing Truth-Seeking Orbs and Kekkei Mōra. These remain speculative goals; a Fusion Seed is only an idea, and he does not possess Wood Release at this stage 43 46.
