Cultivation Principles
Foundation and Method
Blood Exchange and Marrow Washing uses force circulation and breathing to drive blood circulation and transform the body 2.
- Physical prerequisites: External training strengthens the sinews and bones before internal organ refinement prepares the body for blood exchange 3.
- Active transformation: Practitioners circulate vital essence through deliberate exertion and breathing, rather than relying solely on gradual, passive nourishment 11.
- Increasing purity: Normal cultivation should make blood-and-qi power progressively purer, rather than depleting it 19.
- Technical difficulty: The process requires a deeper mastery of force than internal organ refinement 11.
Observable Signs and Risks
- During Li Xian’s first observed session, his skin becomes blood-red, his body appears intensely heated, and visible vapor rises above his head 11.
- Sessions must not be disturbed. A mistake can cause irreversible damage to the foundation and leave the practitioner permanently unable to advance beyond marrow washing 11.
- Severe depletion is associated with Li Xian’s accelerated training and the Blood Jade Art; Zhou Juechen does not consider it a normal result of blood exchange 14 19.
Great Accomplishment and Perfection
- Great accomplishment: Li Xian experiences his blood and qi becoming an interconnected whole 32.
- Perfection: Further refinement pushes blood and qi to their limits. Its principal advantage over great accomplishment is greater endurance, potentially allowing a practitioner to exhaust an otherwise comparable opponent 32.
- Advancement beyond the realm: Primordial Unity enables the perfected essence and qi of an Impervious Body to circulate endlessly. Blood and Qi Mastery is a later attainment marking great accomplishment in the Leakless Realm, not merely entry into Blood Exchange 2 32.
Capabilities and Standing
| Aspect | Documented Significance |
|---|---|
| Combat strength | A fifth-realm martial master can fight a hundred men alone and destroy mountain strongholds 24 29. |
| Regional influence | Blood exchange experts are classed as second-rate and can establish a reputation throughout a prefecture 11. |
| Rarity | Outside concentrations such as sects and sacred grounds, a prefecture of a million inhabitants may have only eight or ten such experts 15. |
| Military prospects | With sufficient military merit, a practitioner may become a Guerrilla General and potentially rise to Deputy General 24. |
| Social position | Practitioners can gain access to powerful households and attract numerous disciples. In Lijiang’s everyday affairs, they hold the highest standing when first-rate experts do not intervene 11 24. |
| Limit against Leakless experts | An Impervious Body supports repeated full-strength attacks through endlessly circulating blood and qi, giving it a major advantage over Blood Exchange 33. |
Cultivation Methods
Five Elements Art
Zhou Juechen’s manual covers cultivation from Bright Force through Blood Exchange and includes his experiences with achieving an Impervious Body 2.
- Provides the foundational instruction Li Xian seeks at Dragon Spring Martial Arts Hall 2.
- Includes breathing and circulation methods Li Xian uses while regulating his blood and qi after intensive training 14.
Blood Jade Art
The Blood Jade Art repeatedly ignites and boils the practitioner’s blood and qi, performing blood exchange and marrow washing through violent purification 14.
- Acceleration: Li Xian’s cultivation becomes more than ten times faster while he maintains its berserk state 14.
- Combat application: Boiling blood and qi also produces explosive strength beyond that of ordinary practitioners at the same level 14.
- Immediate cost: Six days of intensive practice leave Li Xian’s blood and qi depleted 14.
- Long-term dangers: Practitioners may suffer illness, early death, and foundation damage that prevents them from ever achieving an Impervious Body. Many Xu Family practitioners do not live past thirty 14.
- Li Xian’s safeguards: His existing comprehension of Primordial Unity and One Proof, Eternal Proof, Never Regressing talent help him counter its drawbacks, but do not eliminate the need to replenish consumed blood and qi 14.
Blood Refining Technique
The Blood Refining Technique requires Blood Exchange and Marrow Washing as a prerequisite and provides an active method of refining blood and qi into blood essence 42.
- Its refinement process helps practitioners work toward Blood and Qi Mastery 42.
- Full applications include refining blood into force, condensing blood into arrows, and refining blood into an aura 42.
- Its enormous consumption leads ordinary practitioners to replenish themselves by drinking blood; blood from Blood Exchange martial artists is especially effective 42.
- Li Xian argues that exceptional reserves of blood and qi or sufficiently potent Blood-Nourishing Pills can replace blood-drinking 42.
- He subsequently achieves Blood and Qi Mastery through the technique, medicinal support, and his talent 47.
Supporting Medicines
Zhou Juechen recommends the following medicines for restoring vitality consumed by accelerated cultivation or desperate combat, in descending order of preference 19.
| Medicine | Availability and Use |
|---|---|
| Blood-Nourishing Pills | Zhou’s first recommendation. Li Xian later uses them during his attempts to master blood and qi 19 47. |
| Blood Spirit Powder | Zhou cannot readily obtain it. Sword Saint Guangyuan supplies Li Xian with some, enabling him to replenish his reserves and reach minor mastery 19 23 24. |
| Precious Jade Soup | Zhou can obtain its ingredients, but each dose costs three hundred taels. It also supports Li Xian’s later recovery from battle 19 41. |
Notable Practitioners
| Practitioner | Documented Attainment |

Story Significance
Blood Exchange and Marrow Washing is one of Li Xian’s first objectives after learning this world’s martial system. He seeks Zhou Juechen’s instruction specifically because his previous-life experience does not provide a verified method for actively transforming his blood and marrow 1 2 11.
Li Xian mistakes Zhou’s three-month training wager for a demand to complete Blood Exchange and Marrow Washing. Zhou had intended only to test his progress in foundational training. The misunderstanding exposes how extraordinary Li Xian’s pace is: ordinary practitioners need eight or ten years for blood exchange, while faster practitioners still require three to five 18 19.
His rapid advancement also creates danger. Zhou warns that powerful factions would attribute such speed to a divine art or extraordinary fortune and attempt to uncover his secrets rather than simply admire his talent 18.
