| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Eighth rank of martial arts | 1 | His level at sixteen. Studying many other subjects had slowed his martial development. |
| Unspecified higher cultivation | 1 | Awakens near an ancient tomb after a gap in his memories. The aftermath of his fight with an old Daoist suggests strength at least a hundred times greater than before. |
| Early Third Grade | 120 | Explicitly identified during his fight with Ye Shirong. His Heavenly Gang Mace attack tears apart half of the stronger opponent’s palm. |
| Second Grade | 152 | Uses the Golden Orb and blood essence refined by the Blood Demon Pill to strengthen himself during combat. Deliberately restrains advancement to temper his muscles and bones instead. |
| Further foundation and Qi Sea refinement | 195 | Digests the Dragon and Tiger Vitality Pill to improve his physical limits. The Mortal Shedding Pill condenses most, but not all, of his Qi Sea into jade liquid. |
| Transcendent Grade | 283 | Uses Blood Sacrifice while protecting the gravely wounded Bu Yuehua, heals his injuries, and opens the bridge between heaven and earth. |
| Late Fourth Realm | 333 | Advances after sacrificing two cultivators, including Xu Tong. |
| Fifth Realm | 455 | His Fifth Realm foundation allows him to withstand a group of patriarchs and sect leaders while waiting for his allies’ plan to succeed. |
| Approximately “5.25” in Daoist cultivation | 493 | Retrospectively described as the level reached after refining a Jiao Core, which also grants Water Control and Yin Thunder. |
| Approximately “5.4” | 493 | Gains another increase from the cultivator referred to as Rat Tunnel. |
| Late Dragon-Steed Realm, approximately “5.7” | 528 | Reaches this level following Shang Mingzhen’s defeat. His Gang Qi can take solid form, and he demonstrates precise small-scale artifact crafting. |
| Sixth Realm | 569 | Breaks through while holding Sikong Tianyuan by the neck. His accumulated combat experience undergoes a qualitative change, granting conscious control over every bodily function. |
| Middle Sixth Realm | 673 | Reaches this stage after refining more than half of Shang Lianbi’s Blood Qi in seclusion. Recognizes that the Seventh Realm requires another path. |
| Peak Sixth Realm | 680 | Explicitly documented during the confrontation with the Corpse Ancestor. Even this physique cannot withstand Mo Hunsheng’s overwhelming force. |
Background / History
Childhood and the missing years
Xie Jinhuan receives a second life in the Great Qian Dynasty, born as the only child of a county commandant. Determined to distinguish himself, he begins studying at three and pursues martial arts alongside music, chess, calligraphy, painting, astronomy, geography, and social accomplishments. By sixteen, however, his scattered efforts have left him only at the eighth martial rank 1.
His father is framed by the He Clan and sent to Lingnan. The family is attacked on the journey, an incident Xie Jinhuan later attributes to the Nether God Sect. His initial recollection is of fleeing through the woods from a yaoguai 1 431.
He next awakens near a collapsed ancient tomb, physically older and vastly stronger, with no memory of his recent experiences. Later passages connect his combat instincts to training on an island, where he fought simulated opponents and repeatedly practiced surviving without equipment 1 201 431 516.
His father’s survival
Early official records state that Xie Wen died in the line of duty during a demon attack, leaving Xie Jinhuan as the family’s sole survivor. Xie Jinhuan himself mourns the family life he believes he has lost 24 145.
Xie Wen is subsequently revealed to be alive in Northern Zhou, serving as a deputy director in the Criminal Constables Bureau. Father and son reunite while Xie Jinhuan is investigating the conspiracy surrounding Li Huaichuan’s death, and later maintain correspondence through Empress Dowager Guo’s channels 252 254 643.
Appearance
Xie Jinhuan is notably handsome, with carefully cultivated bearing and an athletic physique 1 180.
- Face: Described by admirers as having sword-like brows and star-bright eyes 11.
- Hair: Ink-black; he deliberately musses it when posing as an inconspicuous wandering rogue 146.
- Build: Well-defined waist and abdominal muscles, with strongly developed shoulders, back, and chest 180 503.
- Clothing: Frequently wears white robes or white brocade. For covert travel, he adopts coarse clothing, bamboo hats, windbreakers, and ordinary-looking weapons 146 199 485.
- Bloodline manifestations: Phantom dragon scales appear during power releases; dragon horns emerge when he enlarges his body to protect the peach blossom grove 455 574.
Personality
Xie Jinhuan is ambitious and industrious, but his early determination to master everything initially undermines his progress. As a cultivator, he becomes more disciplined about foundations: even when abundant blood essence makes rapid advancement possible, he suppresses his Qi Sea’s growth to avoid becoming powerful in appearance but ineffective in practice 1 152.
His public reputation rests on repeated acts of demon-slaying and intervention against conspiracies. Lin Wanyi and Linghu Qingmo both recognize that he cannot tolerate demons and crooked-path practitioners harming others, even when helping a foreign country exposes him to danger 273.
He is also theatrical, flirtatious, and willing to bluff. He invents a secluded sect background, exaggerates his supposed master’s standing to intimidate an opponent, and uses conversation to delay hostile cultivators while an ally secures their objective 10 206 454.
His loyalties are personal rather than unquestioningly institutional. The narration distinguishes him from someone devoted above all to an abstract righteous cause: when the Righteous Path conflicts with the people he loves, he seeks to make that path accommodate them. His unwillingness to abandon others also leads him into risks serious enough for Ye Hongshang to intervene and reprimand him 284 619.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Dao
His principal discipline is Martial Dao; the other cultivation traditions supplement his close-combat foundation 516.
- Weapon versatility: Uses swords, sabers, spears, maces, and improvised or borrowed weapons. At the Heroes’ Gathering, he repeatedly matches his opponent’s weapon rather than taking an equipment advantage 199 201 217.
- Unarmed combat: Uses Cannon Fists, kicks, grappling, and tightly controlled evasions. Island training teaches him to survive desperate situations without weapons 202 300 516.
- Exploiting openings: Defeats Zhang Jian by turning one positional error into sustained spear pressure, preventing him from regaining his footing 201.
- Vital-point attacks: Commonly targets the throat and eyes rather than relying on exchanges of raw strength 152.
- Limits: Superior cultivation can overwhelm his balanced foundation; Mo Hunsheng sends him flying despite his peak Sixth Realm physique 680.
Techniques of the Five Cults
Xie Jinhuan can transform his qi to employ methods associated with Daoism, Buddhism, Martial Dao, Witchcraft, and the Demon Path. This is more efficient than separately cultivating incompatible disciplines as Shang Mingzhen does 431 516.
- Daoist arts: Palm Thunder, fire techniques, Blazing True Fire, and the Three Pure Ones Treading the Dipper Steps 32 431 516 528.
- Buddhist defenses: Vajra Meditation and Nine Lotuses Covering the Realm 574.
- Witch Cult methods: Charm Techniques and divine-soul curses 431 516.
- Early inefficiency: His experimental qi division retains only one-fifth of his usable qi for Thunder Magic. Even doubled by the Zhenglun Sword, it initially produces less power than straightforward martial attacks 47.
Dragon-Vein Bloodline
His dragon veins are bestowed by Ye Hongshang rather than established as his original ancestry. Their power is restrained by the Seven-Star Nails so that his mortal body can survive it 566.
- Controlled releases: Invokes named releases including Heavenly Authority, Heavenly Pivot, and Heavenly Jade to increase his power 455 516 566.
- Physical effects: Produces dragon might and phantom scales that become increasingly substantial under greater releases 516.
- Safety thresholds: Properly controlling Heavenly Jade requires the Sixth Realm; full control over all seven stars requires the peak Sixth Realm or Seventh Realm 566.
- Overload: Using Heavenly Jade before reaching the Sixth Realm nearly tears apart his muscles, bones, organs, and qi meridians 566.
Blood Sacrifice and Refinement
Blood-based cultivation supplies both recovery and advancement, but can place extreme demands on his body and judgment 283 673.
- Emergency recovery: Blood Sacrifice rapidly repairs injuries during the battle in Shenshang Gorge 283.
- Cultivation gains: Sacrifices and refined Blood Qi contribute to his later Fourth and Sixth Realm advances 333 673.
- Acquired abilities: Refining a Jiao Core grants Water Control and Yin Thunder 493.
- Side effects: Blood Qi refinement and Demonic Baleful Qi intensify his desires, requiring companions to remain with him as Guardians of the Dao during seclusion 673.
Sixth Realm Body Control
After his breakthrough, bodily control that previously depended largely on instinct becomes conscious and comprehensive 569.
- Size alteration: Enlarges himself to shield a peach blossom grove and the school behind it 574.
- Layered protection: Combines Coiled Dragon Spans the Ridge, Buddhist defenses, and protective lotuses 574.
- Limits: Daoist Kongkong’s damaged flying sword still penetrates these defenses and injures his internal organs 575.
Swordsmanship and Soul Countermeasures
- Seven Absolutes of the Xu Sage: States that he worked out these techniques himself; later uses them with Ye Yunchi’s Nihility Sword to overwhelm Chaochitai 431 503.
- Blind-Eye Swordplay: Believes he learned it through the island’s illusion. Its resemblance to Ye Sheng’s lineage contributes to Ye Yunchi mistaking him for Ye Sheng’s disciple 431.
- Disembodied defense: When Shang Mingzhen knocks his soul out of his body, he uses a curse technique taught by Bu Yuehua to disrupt the attacker and return 516.
- Dependence on allies: Ye Hongshang can take control of his body or retrieve his soul, but these interventions are her abilities, not his own 456 516 619.
Investigation, Arts, and Crafting
- Investigation and infiltration: Follows clues through criminal networks, adopts convincing disguises, and allows himself to be captured to locate a bandit base 106 180 319.
- Tracking and evasion: Gains a reputation for tracking exceptionally well and appearing or vanishing unpredictably 255.
- Music: Plays the pipa, teaches dancing, and identifies a counterfeit bone flute 53 424.
- Painting and poetry: Paints lifelike portraits and impresses Ye Yunchi with his literary knowledge 424 446.
- Languages: Knows some Western Regions speech, which he attributes to encounters through his father’s official work 241.
- Artifact crafting: Melts jade with Blazing True Fire, inscribes formation channels, and quenches it with the Black Tortoise Divine Gift to create a simple Dharma Artifact 528.
