Background / History

Childhood and Missing Moon Manor

Bu Yuehua grew up as Missing Moon Manor’s young lady, surrounded by venomous snakes and scorpions but sheltered by her parents. When she was seven, her senior brother Bu Hanying brought news that her father, Bu Qingya, had apparently been killed. Witch Alliance elders concluded that an unknown attacker had used the Soul-Seizing Lock and taken his body. Bu Yuehua subsequently became the manor’s young lord 244.

During her childhood, the woman later identified as Empress Dowager Guo appeared when Bu Yuehua was desperate and taught her a powerful martial art. Bu Yuehua continued practicing it for years without knowing her benefactor’s name or publicly discussing her 260.

Bu Yuehua sought to establish a future beyond the Southern Border. She maintained that Missing Moon Manor had originally been righteous and had been driven south through its association with Chi Dragon Cave. Her ambitions included opening a Central Plains branch and eventually securing support for the Gu Poison Sect’s return 185 462.

Blood Alliance with Nangong Ye

While competing with Nangong Ye for Phoenix Feather Grass, Bu Yuehua accidentally fell with her into the underground realm beneath Fire Phoenix Valley. Suspecting that they had discovered the Vermilion Bird Mausoleum, they agreed to explore together and divide its treasures equally 101.

Their alliance was enforced through mutual threats: Nangong Ye implanted Seven-Star Nails in Bu Yuehua, while Bu Yuehua planted an Immortal-Burning Gu in Nangong Ye. Bu Yuehua’s heavily yin-oriented cultivation prevented her from replenishing her qi effectively underground. After their initial search yielded little, she secretly took the Phoenix Feather Grass, arguing that Nangong Ye could have the remaining opportunities 101.

The resulting dispute lasted into the following year. Bu Yuehua claimed to be in seclusion while the nails restricted her cultivation, but her prolonged inactivity encouraged unrest among Southern Border rivals. She eventually sent a secret proposal to reconcile and dissolve the pact 101 171.

Heroes’ Gathering and Phoenix Mausoleum

After Lin Wanyi helped remove the Seven-Star Nails, Bu Yuehua entered Wei Wuyi’s Heroes’ Gathering as Hua Ruyue of Azure Nether Sword Manor, seeking Tiger Bone Vine for a breakthrough. She sustained the disguise by presenting Nangong Ye’s assumed identity as a fellow disciple 185 195.

At the tournament, she moved to prevent Liang Yue from exploiting an exhausted Xie Jinhuan. Xie defeated Liang Yue himself, then invited her to fight. Their restrained exchange with twin swords was interpreted by spectators as the Lovers’ Sword, much to Nangong Ye’s displeasure 202.

Bu Yuehua subsequently discovered Nangong Ye’s secret relationship with Xie and used her discretion as bargaining leverage. The two agreed to prioritize the Phoenix Mausoleum’s opportunities over their dispute about the grass. By the expedition’s end, Bu Yuehua had reached Transcendent Grade and obtained a Divine Gift, although her Divine Soul had been injured 215 216 238.

Search for Her Father’s Attacker

Rumors of the Soul-Seizing Lock drew Bu Yuehua and Xie Jinhuan to Baihua County. Their investigation revealed correspondence connected to her family’s old grievances, but the clues had also been used to lure them into an ambush 243 245 246.

Wounded and pursued by Lü Yan, Bu Yuehua fought alongside Xie with assistance from Ye Hongshang, whose possession granted her perception and techniques beyond her own capabilities. They escaped, and Ye Hongshang took the Fire-Command Edict through Bu Yuehua’s body during the fighting 248 249 250 251.

Later, Bu Yuehua encountered her father alive but under an enemy’s control. During the confrontation with Bai Xu, Ye Hongshang again acted through her, allowing her to hold the Soul-Seizing Lock without having her soul extracted. Bu Qingya was recovered, but his missing souls prevented a full awakening. Bu Yuehua assigned him protective duties at the Danyang Marquis Household rather than treating him as a combat puppet 324 325 483.

Relationship with Xie Jinhuan

Bu Yuehua initially kept her distance from Xie because he was her disciple’s husband. Their travels nevertheless brought increasing intimacy: she kissed his cheek after their escape from Lü Yan, partly to honor a promise made during the danger 241 251 252.

At Shenshang Gorge, she shielded Xie from lightning and a lance strike while they were surrounded by Xiao Zhen’s forces. Xie hid her in an underground river, broke through to Transcendent Grade through Blood Sacrifice, defeated their pursuers, and carried her away 283.

Afterward, she confessed that she was Bu Yuehua rather than Hua Ruyue; Xie revealed that he already knew. They became lovers while she recovered in Parrot Alley. She then told Lin Wanyi and offered to make her Missing Moon Manor’s Holy Maiden and eventual successor 284 286 290.

Sect Recognition and Later Activities

Bu Yuehua’s assistance with Gu Poison Sect matters, her connection to Lin Wanyi, and her association with Xie earned Missing Moon Manor a place at a gathering of major religious and state figures. She treated their courtesy as an opportunity to improve the sect’s standing in the Central Plains 339.

Empress Dowager Guo later formally accepted her as a disciple. Bu Yuehua had intended to offer a Divine Gift opportunity to Great Qian’s Eldest Princess in exchange for support for the Gu Poison Sect; Guo instead bestowed it on Bu Yuehua herself 462.

She continued supporting Xie during later crises, including efforts to contain his demonic transformation after the Demon Saber injured his Divine Soul. She also helped Nangong Ye with work at the Directorate of Celestial Observation and participated in experiments confirming that Xie’s dual cultivation affected the world’s spiritual charm 662 687.

When Ye Hongshang restored Bu Qingya’s remnant soul, Bu Yuehua reunited with her father after nearly thirty years and introduced Xie as her husband. She brought Bu Qingya to Carefree Cave and remained to explain the family’s changed circumstances. She later prepared for the grand wedding alongside her disciples and granddisciples 696 704.

Appearance

Bu Yuehua has a mature, curvaceous figure, fair skin, peach-blossom eyes, and a gentle, dignified face. Her composed bearing and glasses give her an intellectual appearance that contrasts with her reputation as a demoness 185 241 462.

  • Glasses: Wears slender-framed or black-rimmed spectacles; removes them while traveling under her swordswoman disguise 185 194 462.
  • Hair ornaments: Uses a butterfly clip decorated with violet-blue petals and is also described wearing a bow-shaped clip 185 215.
  • Clothing: Frequently wears blue or dark-blue dresses, with a cloak and veil or veiled hat when traveling 185 194 238.
  • Accessories: Wears a bracelet adorned with silver bells and carries medicine bottles as part of her usual equipment 185 194.

Personality

Bu Yuehua is politically pragmatic and attentive to her manor’s future. She initially accepted Lin Wanyi partly because Wanyi was the daughter of the Imperial Medical Academy’s Vice Director. She later pursued court support, Central Plains recognition, and useful alliances for her sect 260 339 462.

She enjoys teasing Nangong Ye and exploiting the gap between her rival’s austere reputation and private behavior. When embarrassed herself, she often tries to preserve an outwardly elegant composure rather than surrender the advantage. The unequal treatment of Nangong Ye as a pure immortal maiden and herself as a demoness genuinely irritates her 215 288 362 662.

Despite her scheming, she is neither indiscriminately cruel nor indifferent to obligations. She dismisses the idea of robbing a wealthy caravan, worries about repeatedly benefiting from Xie without repaying him, and risks her life to protect him. Once she acknowledges her feelings, she is willing to pursue the relationship despite its awkward consequences 241 252 283 286.

Abilities & Skills

Combined Witchcraft and Martial Arts

Bu Yuehua trains both disciplines, using supernatural interference to create openings for close combat. Empress Dowager Guo encourages her to retain both paths, describing their combination as harder to cultivate but possessing a higher ceiling 216 462.

  • Opens fights with poisonous mist, concealment, throwing knives, and the Bliss Bell 216.
  • Combines illusions with close-range knife strikes 216.
  • Possesses strong martial foundations, but acknowledges that martial skill alone may not suppress a specialist empowered by the Jianbing Divine Gift 216.

Poison, Concealment, and Tracking

Her Gu Poison Sect training emphasizes covert pursuit and attacks from concealment 196 266.

  • Follows Xie Jinhuan despite his deliberate efforts to evade pursuit 196.
  • Uses a green flame to track a fleeing ghost cultivator, then attacks the bird it has occupied with a fang-shaped throwing knife 189.
  • Blends into terrain before launching an explosive saber ambush 266.
  • Releases a broad cloud of poisonous green mist; Zhang Yanzhou counters it by drawing it away with a tornado 283.

Swordsmanship and Saber Combat

Bu Yuehua uses both a slender saber and paired swords 185 202.

  • Mother-and-Child Twin Swords: A long, light sword attacks while a shorter, heavier sword guards her centerline, enabling rapid transitions between offense and defense 202.
  • Restrained sparring: Maintains precise control while fighting the exhausted Xie without seriously injuring him 202.
  • Saber attacks: Uses sudden, close-range strikes from ambush and continues defending Xie even while gravely wounded 266 283.

Illusions and Soul Techniques

Her witchcraft includes illusion attacks and techniques involving the Divine Soul 216 277 626.

  • Attempts an eye-contact illusion against Yao Wei; his stronger ghost-cultivator soul defeats the attempt and turns the illusion against her 277.
  • Possesses Lin Zisu’s body in later chapters 602 626.
  • Can withstand some soul-directed curses under ordinary conditions, but existing Divine Soul injuries substantially weaken that resistance 266.

Borrowed Power through Ye Hongshang

Ye Hongshang, also called A Piao, can possess Bu Yuehua and act through her body. These feats are not equivalent to Bu Yuehua’s unaided strength 249 250 324.

  • Grants greatly expanded perception and access to unfamiliar techniques 249.
  • Disrupts the local power of heaven and earth, interfering with Lü Yan’s spell trajectories; the exertion rapidly drains Bu Yuehua’s qi and strains her meridians 250.
  • Takes the Fire-Command Edict during their escape 251.
  • Allows Bu Yuehua’s body to seize the Soul-Seizing Lock without suffering its normal soul-extracting effect 324.

Witch Doctor

Bu Yuehua’s medical knowledge makes her useful both in sect affairs and during emergencies 337 680.

  • Is consulted when Great Qian’s emperor suffers an unusual poison 337.
  • Directs Nangong Ye to purchase Bone-Burning Vine and Dragon Marrow Zhi after learning of Ye Yunchi’s poisoning 439.
  • Can serve as a battlefield doctor and moves to check on Empress Dowager Guo when her master is injured 680.

  • Lin Wanyi — Direct disciple and fellow member of Xie’s household. Bu Yuehua offers her the positions of Holy Maiden and eventual Manor Lord, and later argues that she should retain the principal wife’s position 260 290 527.
  • Empress Dowager Guo — Childhood benefactor and later formal master. Passes on her lifetime’s cultivation knowledge while urging Bu Yuehua to develop her own path rather than merely imitate her 260 462.
  • Bu Qingya — Father and former Witch Alliance second-in-command. His apparent murder drives her investigation; she later protects his unawakened body and witnesses his restoration 244 483 696.

  • Nangong Ye — Longstanding rival, blood-sworn ally, and fellow partner of Xie. Their relationship combines genuine cooperation with bargaining, teasing, and repeated attempts to embarrass one another 101 216 288 478.

  • Lin Zisu — Junior within her disciple’s lineage. Bu Yuehua requests medicines from her, uses her body through possession, and encourages a match between her and Xie 354 626 649.
