It had not been discovered, shut down, or evacuated by the people inside. It had disappeared.
The entire Ratway, the entire structure, all those densely packed sewer rooms, had vanished completely.
Vanessa had previously entered the Ratway through one door and left through another. Now she had visited both passages, but could find no trace of the Ratway. It had not been concealed. It had disappeared completely.
"I remember this junction. Turn left, and there was the Ratway..." Vanessa stared at the wall before her in shock.
The heavy masonry was somewhat cracked, with moss growing thick in the gaps. Nothing about it looked like a newly built cover.
Vanessa inspected it carefully, but her conclusion shocked her. Those passages seemed never to have existed in the first place, as though everything had merely been her hallucination.

It was as though the Ratway had never existed, as though it had been erased from the world outright.
Something that had never existed naturally could not be investigated, and would not be discovered by [The Thinker].
Standing in the sewer, Vanessa felt cold all over.
These Secret Societies, whether the Ratway or the Fog Horn Fraternity, all seemed rather unremarkable. They might not even have more than a handful of Supernatural people, yet somehow they could evade the Night Watch Bureau's searches.
Vanessa could not help wondering:
Did these organizations really possess so little power?
If the Ratway could erase itself entirely from history, did that mean they also had more powerful Supernatural people who simply had not revealed themselves? No, even the Night Watch Bureau had never revealed that it possessed such might. The Difference Engine, which could
