Background / History
Childhood and university
Vanessa lost her mother at a young age and grew up in an orphanage, where Winnie protected her from bullying. Winnie left school after six months but continued helping Vanessa pursue an education. During one difficult winter, Winnie sold her long hair to buy bread for them both 16 17 49.
With Winnie’s support and a substantial student loan, Vanessa entered Miskatonic University and earned degrees in history and archaeology. Her library research was strong enough to let her complete her thesis without field investigations. She studied women executed as witches and concluded that the cases reflected religious persecution rather than supernatural activity 6 11 29.
After graduation, Vanessa remained at the university as a teaching assistant. She hoped eventually to become a lecturer, then a professor, and lead archaeological expeditions. Budget cuts instead eliminated her position, and Randall gave her two days to vacate the faculty dormitory 1.
Homelessness and hospital employment
Vanessa spent twenty days unsuccessfully looking for work and shelter. Employers rejected her for having no fixed address, while homelessness made her increasingly unpresentable. She eventually collapsed in freezing rain within sight of shelter and a relief station, unable to reach either 1.
An outside will forced her body to walk to the hospital, where Dr. Norman treated her severe hypothermia. Unable to pay, she accepted work as an orderly under Old Razi. Her weekly wage was thirty-five Leo, with at most ten left to her after deductions toward her medical bill. The job provided a late-night meal and permission to sleep in a morgue drawer 3 5.
She bought a secondhand trench coat and cheap food, then reunited with Winnie at a bakery. Despite her initial distress at handling bodies, Vanessa gradually became accustomed to transporting corpses and sleeping beside them 6 13.
The Mad Caregiver
Hospital deliveries brought Vanessa into Wild Dog Gang territory, where she met Dorothea Ramsey. Elliot’s interference frightened Allen and placed his folding knife in Vanessa’s hand, undermining her attempts to explain the controlling presence through hypnosis or hallucinations 9 10 11.
A corpse-eating attacker later cornered Vanessa in an alley. She initially fled, then turned back in anger; Elliot took control during the ensuing fight and helped her kill him. The mutilated body and sightings of Vanessa carrying a bloodied club gave rise to the Mad Caregiver legend. Gang rumors exaggerated her into an orderly who manufactured corpses whenever she wanted more work 18 19 20 28.
Occult discoveries
Following a dead old man’s lead, Vanessa entered the abandoned house at No. 37 Pine Resin Alley, also called Rosin Alley. Elliot guided her to a basement altar and concealed attic chests containing books on sacrifice. Although she studied the ritual instructions, their warnings made her reluctant to experiment 22 25 26 27.
Elliot subsequently compelled her to spy on the Mourning Poetry Society’s blood-and-raw-meat ceremony. Seeing fresh bandages on Winnie’s wrist led Vanessa to suspect her friend’s involvement. Library research established that the society’s rituals were internal, had not harmed outsiders, and had not resulted in a cult designation 27 28 30.
Elliot then forced Vanessa to draw a sacrificial array in her own blood. Unknown to her, he selected himself as the recipient through the Difference Engine. The tiny fingernail offerings and resulting cards led her to suspect that the ritual’s recipient might be the same being controlling her 30 33 34.
While searching for Winnie, Vanessa learned that her friend was caring for orphaned children. Alice brought her into the Mourning Poetry Society’s mansion, where Vanessa discovered that her own hospital belonged to the Circle of Vitas and that its special-cargo orderlies commonly served as supernatural muscle 40 41 42.
Corpse outbreak and rescue efforts
During the outbreak, Norman persuaded Vanessa to help save the injured. She assisted him in treating Harbor District residents while Dorothea dealt with infected people who died and threatened to reanimate 44 46.
Vanessa then discovered Winnie’s body aboard a hospital corpse carriage. When its guards refused assistance to the wounded and fired on her, she openly prayed to the controlling being. With its intervention, she fought through the guards and shot the hospital’s deputy administrative head 46 47.
She nevertheless resisted killing the remaining guards, redirecting a controlled shot away from a man’s head. After disabling them, she promised to have Norman treat them after the other wounded. She cleaned Winnie’s face, secured the body to her back with Dorothea’s help, and turned away from the safe district to continue rescuing people 48 49.
Continuing through the ruins with Dorothea, Vanessa acquired a discarded crowbar and used it to smash an attacking corpse’s head. She then spotted Alice in an upstairs window; Alice urgently warned her to run 50.
Appearance
- Hair: Long brown hair that she carefully maintained before becoming homeless; later often tangled or disheveled 3 6 29.
- Eyes: Dark, described as pitch-black during the shock of her dismissal 1 3.
- Build: Slender and physically frail, with a pale face 1 3 20.
- Clothing: A secondhand, bloodstained trench coat and boots that become spattered with mud and gore during her work 6 20 29.
- Injuries: Chilblains on her cheek after homelessness; later loses her left index finger during the secret-art experiment 6 34.
Personality
Vanessa is reserved, self-effacing, and easily satisfied with modest security. She has few university friends and initially prefers a routine of work, food, and shelter over pursuing dangerous clues. Poverty also leaves her ashamed of her appearance and reluctant to approach former colleagues or visit Winnie without a suitable gift 10 13 16 29 40.
Her academic pride survives these hardships. She readily mentions her two degrees and is exceptionally capable at finding and connecting written evidence. Her conviction that supernatural powers do not exist rests on her historical research, making her encounters with impossible events particularly unsettling 10 11 29 43.
Her response to Elliot’s control changes from terror to dependence and finally devotion. She first seeks treatment for presumed hallucinations, later welcomes intervention that has repeatedly saved her life, and eventually calls the presence her “Lord.” Nevertheless, she also recognizes the danger of relying on it for every obstacle and tries to act independently 11 24 41 47 48.
Vanessa experiences exhilaration and bloodlust during combat, then recoils from the aftermath of her first killing. She often attributes these feelings to being controlled, although her anger precedes Elliot’s direct intervention during the alley fight. Even after Winnie’s death, she retains a limit: she refuses to execute the defeated guards and chooses to continue saving lives 18 19 20 21 49.
Abilities & Skills
Historical and archaeological research
Vanessa’s strongest independent skill is extracting conclusions from written sources 29.
- Earned two degrees and completed her thesis without field investigations 29.
- Connects clues across fiction, historical records, and unrelated-looking books 29.
- Investigates the Mourning Poetry Society’s beliefs and legal standing through library research 29 30.
- Has limited grounding in art and initially cannot identify the basement altar’s carved pattern 25.
Difference Engine–assisted actions
Elliot can direct Vanessa’s body and speech through the Difference Engine, producing feats beyond her unaided competence 3 19 27.
- Combat: Precisely timed evasions, counterattacks, and weapon use; later dodges gunfire during the confrontation with hospital guards 19 20 47.
- Infiltration: Climbs walls and rooftops despite Vanessa’s fear of heights 27.
- Lockpicking: Opens an attic chest through repeated attempts with an improvised hairpin tool 25 26.
- Limits: The assistance does not demonstrate equivalent independent skill. Vanessa fails to reproduce the wall climb and is unsure whether she can fight when the presence is absent 28 41.
- Resistance: She can express an opposing intention; when she redirects a proposed killing shot, Elliot relinquishes control 48.
Spirit Vision
Spirit Vision allows Vanessa to perceive otherwise hidden supernatural traces 36 41.
- Sees light surrounding Norman’s hands and surgical instruments 36.
- Detects tiny white dots surrounding her near the Mourning Poetry Society’s mansion 41.
- Observes white-glowing corpses in the warehouse yard 43.
Sacrificial knowledge
Vanessa learns sacrificial procedures from The Sins and Punishments of Sacrifice—The Pitiful Extraordinary Ones 26 27.
- Recognizes the basement as a purpose-built altar and understands the warnings about interrupted or failed rituals 27 33.
- Draws an intricate blood array while controlled, without the specialized drafting tools prescribed by the book 30.
- Receives cards documenting the Omniscience and Flesh Ascension Paths, including procedures and offerings 34.
- Does not initially know the recipient or intended offering of the ritual Elliot initiates 33.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Nail-Headed Club — Bloodstained wooden club studded with steel nails, inherited from previous hospital orderlies. Its nails can lodge in skulls and tangle in hair, making it difficult to retrieve 17 19.
- Folding Knife — Taken from Allen under Elliot’s control; used in combat and to excavate the hidden house key 11 20 22.
- Secondhand Trench Coat — Bought for seven Leo; previously belonged to a soldier who died demanding compensation. It came with a medal 6.
- Flatbed Cart and Hospital-Marked Body Bags — Used for deliveries and corpse transport. The hospital markings ordinarily discourage interference from gangs and patrol officers 8 17.
- Portable Gas Lamp — Owned for illumination, though she neglects to bring it on her daytime house exploration 25.
- Enamel-Inlaid White Lily Brooch — A five-Leo gift selected with Alice for Winnie; still in Vanessa’s pocket when she finds Winnie dead 43 47.
- Shotgun — Seized during the carriage confrontation; empty when Vanessa subsequently attempts to shoot a guard’s leg 47 48.
- Crowbar — Retrieved from rubble and used against an animated corpse during rescue efforts 50.
Relationships
- Winnie — Closest friend from the orphanage and a major source of emotional and material support. Vanessa’s discovery of Winnie’s responsibilities changes her understanding of their friendship; Winnie’s death precipitates her confrontation with the hospital guards 6 17 41 47.
- Elliot — Secretly controls her through the Difference Engine. Vanessa does not initially know his identity, perceiving him as a mysterious will that she eventually worships as her Lord 27 33 47 48.
- Dr. Norman — Treats her hypothermia, arranges her debt-repayment employment, and later recruits her into emergency relief work 3 5 44 46.
- Old Razi / Lachi — Hospital warehouse caretaker and direct supervisor. Teaches her corpse handling and assigns deliveries 5 8 13.
- Dorothea Ramsey / Crow — Medical student encountered through hospital deliveries. Initially offers alarming treatment for Vanessa’s supposed hallucinations, later seeks her help as muscle and accompanies her during the outbreak 10 11 28 49 50.
- Alice — One of the children cared for by Winnie. Vanessa regrets treating her as a threat; Alice later comforts her, guides her to the society’s mansion, and warns her during the rescue mission 23 41 50.
- Allen — Wild Dog Gang member and Winnie’s partner. Initially terrified of Vanessa; she first considers him unworthy of Winnie, then revises her judgment after learning of their shared care for orphans 17 41.
- Randall Aldrich — University superior who informs her of her dismissal. Later brings her twenty Leo; Dorothea recommends him for psychotherapy 1 5 11.
- Damian Graves — Mourning Poetry Society member who explains the society’s history and permits her to return provided she brings food and no trouble 43.
