Background / History
Accepting Qin Chen
Before teaching Qin Chen, Feng Yuzi was already renowned throughout the Qianlong Continent as its foremost artifact refiner. Many divine weapons in Qin De’s estate and elsewhere in the Chu Dynasty were his creations 8.
Qin De summoned him to Cloudmist Manor after Qin Chen requested instruction in artifact refining. Believing the urgent summons concerned an early move by the Xiang Family, Feng Yuzi was exasperated to discover that he had been called to teach a child not yet ten. His objections disappeared after examining Qin Chen’s meridians and confirming his Late Xiantian cultivation. He accepted Qin Chen as his sole personal disciple and promised to teach him without reservation 8 9.
During their first lesson, Feng Yuzi demonstrated purification, shaping, and formation inscription. Qin Chen immediately reproduced the process, creating a Supreme Lower-Grade Magical Artifact approaching mid-grade quality. Delighted, Feng Yuzi predicted that his disciple would reach Golden Core within ten years and eventually craft supreme-grade spirit artifacts 9.
Three Years at Cloudmist Manor
Feng Yuzi’s original curriculum allotted three years to foundational training and ten years to intermediate arrays. Qin Chen compressed that schedule into days. By the second month, Feng Yuzi had stopped teaching specific methods and instead tended fires, carried materials, and recorded his disciple’s formation improvements 10.
When Mu Qing claimed Qin Chen as a pill-refining disciple, Feng Yuzi fiercely opposed diverting the boy from artifact refining. Qin Chen persuaded both masters that the two crafts shared underlying principles. They settled on artifact refining in the morning, pill refining in the afternoon, and uninterrupted cultivation at night 10 11.
After three years, Feng Yuzi and Mu Qing acknowledged that they had nothing further to teach him. They planned to return to the capital and enter seclusion to digest the insights gained from their student, but postponed their departure when Qin Chen asked them to guard his Golden Core breakthrough 13 14.
Guarding the Golden Core Tribulation
Initially alarmed that Qin Chen intended to attempt Core Formation only a year after reaching Xiantian Paragon, Feng Yuzi agreed to remain after witnessing the strength of his true essence. He then carried Qin Chen and Qin Yu to Black Wind Grand Canyon on his flying sword 13 14 15.
During the tribulation, Feng Yuzi recognized that the fifty-li cloud cover far exceeded an ordinary Four-Nine Heavenly Tribulation. When Crimson Blood Baleful Thunder formed, he swept Mu Qing and the three observing Qin brothers ten li farther away. He also recognized the final merging of the tribulation clouds 16 17 18.
After Qin Chen survived, Feng Yuzi tearfully identified the descending spiritual-energy replenishment as proof of success. He and Mu Qing saluted their former student as an equal; Feng Yuzi judged that even together they would not last ten exchanges against him. The two masters then took their leave 19.
Appearance
Feng Yuzi initially appears as a refined man in azure Daoist robes with an immortal-like bearing. Later descriptions emphasize his aged face and beard 8 13.
- Muscular arms: Years of forging have left his arms visibly knotted with muscle 11.
- Broad sleeves: Part of his usual robes; he rolls them up during his heated dispute with Mu Qing 11.
- Work-worn appearance: While assisting Qin Chen, he is seen with soot covering his face 10.
Personality
Feng Yuzi normally maintains a refined, easygoing grandmaster’s demeanor, but his enthusiasm for artifact refining can overturn that composure. His skepticism toward Qin Chen quickly becomes exuberant pride, and he commits ores treasured for decades to his disciple’s experiments 8 9 10.
He is fiercely protective of Qin Chen’s potential, nearly coming to blows with Mu Qing over the boy’s training. Nevertheless, he accepts Qin Chen’s proposal to study both crafts and openly admits when his student has exhausted his knowledge. Rather than insist on his own authority, he records Qin Chen’s innovations and plans further study of his own 10 11 13.
His caution is especially evident around breakthroughs: he challenges Qin Chen’s short consolidation period and hesitates to bring the pre-Xiantian Qin Yu near a heavenly tribulation 13 15.
