Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Rank 90 115 Recalled retrospectively. He asked Mu En to obtain a hundred-thousand-year ninth soul ring, but Mu En judged that he could not absorb it because of his temperament, despite his five ten-thousand-year soul bones.
Rank 95 — Super Douluo 49 54 Reached this realm early with Shrek’s concentrated support, then remained stalled for twenty-eight years. Mu En considered his character a major obstacle to further advancement.
Rank 96 — Super Douluo 117 122 123 Broke through while Feng Ling’s abuse caused his Bright Phoenix to dim and develop an evil aura. He discovered the advancement after awakening and mistook it for a near-death breakthrough; his flight speed also increased.

Background / History

Yan Shaozhe did not come from a major family. Shrek took him in as a direct disciple during his first year and cultivated him as a next-generation successor. The academy’s concentrated resources helped make him the leading figure among his peers 53 54.

He became Mu En’s disciple and rose to dean of the Martial Soul Department. Over time, his connections became deeply embedded in Shrek’s leadership: he, his wife Cai Mei’er, and his former girlfriend Xian Lin’er occupied three of the academy’s four principal dean and deputy-dean positions. Mu En recognized that simply dismissing him would not eliminate his influence 66.

Appearance

  • Human form: A white-haired, middle-aged-looking man with narrow eyes, despite being in his eighties 20 151.
  • Martial soul form: Transforms into a phoenix wielding flames and light. After Feng Ling’s attack, its formerly dazzling radiance becomes extremely dim 115 122.

Personality

Yan Shaozhe is miserly with institutional resources and possessive of departmental authority. He reduces the Soul Tool Department’s allocation to one percent of the Martial Soul Department’s budget, then refuses to let Qian Duoduo recruit students he does not want to support himself. His judgments also accommodate political connections: he denies Lu Yu a core disciple position as supposedly vicious while treating Dai Huabin’s misconduct as something the Duke’s Mansion can settle through compensation 20 45 48.

His prolonged cultivation bottleneck feeds his resentment and ambition. He privately blames Mu En for denying him a hundred-thousand-year soul ring and treats advancement as more important than the condition of his martial soul. Although he can present himself as apologetic and self-sacrificing, his private thoughts reveal a continuing determination to recover authority and become Sea God Pavilion Master 115 122 151.

His traditionalism is selective. Initially a leading opponent of soul tools, he later equips Shrek’s tournament team with expensive devices and punishes Ma Xiaotao for rejecting them. He also dismisses former Shrek students’ rapid advancement as drug-assisted cultivation rather than reconsidering his earlier assessment of their talent 175 176.

Abilities & Skills

Bright Phoenix Martial Soul

A high-quality martial soul that Mu En considers no less exceptional than his own Light Sacred Dragon 151.

  • Enables phoenix transformation, flight, flame attacks, and powerful light-attribute attacks 115 123.
  • Initially suppresses Feng Ling’s Corruption Potion 117.
  • Begins rejecting Yan Shaozhe during his attack on the Emperor Auspicious Beast, abruptly weakening his light power 116.
  • Later loses much of its radiance as an evil aura develops within its core 117 122.

Phoenix Nirvana

A rebirth ability that allows him to survive the destruction of his body 116.

  • Revives him at a chosen location through a phoenix egg 116 117.
  • Leaves him weakened afterward 116.
  • Saves him after Di Tian tears apart his phoenix form, but does not prevent Feng Ling from locating his rebirth site and drugging him before he awakens 116 117.

Modified Ruling the World

Yan Shaozhe studied Mu En’s signature technique for decades without grasping its original intent. He instead incorporated his own intent to create a defensive counterattack and lock-on variant, whose stated ceiling remains at the Super Douluo level 66.

  • Makes his presence seem to merge with the world, allowing him to evade the Three-Eyed Golden Lion’s spiritual attack 115.
  • Compresses space around his fist to pull at a target and prevent escape 115.
  • Knocks down the already-injured Three-Eyed Golden Lion with a punch 115.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Nine soul rings: Two yellow, two purple, and five black, displayed during his confrontation with the tournament referees. Wang Dong’s promised ring-age upgrades are not shown as having been fulfilled 115 200.
  • Five ten-thousand-year soul bones: Already possessed when he reached rank 90; these included a skull bone and a torso bone 115.
  • Tournament team armaments: Arranges general-purpose level-5 and level-6 soul tools, low-consumption level-7 devices, level-8 trump cards, and Invincible Shields for Shrek’s contestants 175 197.

Relationships

  • Mu En — Teacher and patron. Mu En suspends him over the departure of three promising students, but later accepts his apparent reform and again considers him a viable successor. Yan Shaozhe privately suspects Mu En of trying to take away his power 65 66 151.
  • Cai Mei’er — Wife and Martial Soul Department deputy dean. Helps conceal his responsibility for attacking the Emperor Auspicious Beast and supports a version of events that shifts the principal blame onto Xuan Zi 54 123 124.
  • Xian Lin’er — Former girlfriend. Broke up with him after discovering his infidelity and subsequently married Qian Duoduo 54.
  • Qian Duoduo — Departmental and romantic rival. Opposes Yan Shaozhe’s resource restrictions and reports his treatment of Lu Yu and Huo Yutong to Mu En 45 54 64.
  • Xuan Zi — Political ally and co-organizer of the disastrous soul hunt. Yan Shaozhe later begs Cai Mei’er to place the blame on him, then attempts to recruit him for another operation involving immortal herbs or Sun Moon Empire soul tools 65 66 123 206.
  • Zhang Lexuan — Appointed acting dean after his suspension. Reports his token search for the missing students and later refuses to surrender the Sea God Token for his proposed operation 66 69 206.
  • Ma Xiaotao — Student. He plans to claim a hundred-thousand-year soul bone for her, but later removes her tournament captaincy when she questions his use of soul tools 66 175.
  • Lu Yu — Student turned opponent. Yan Shaozhe denies him core disciple status, contributes to his departure from Shrek, and later tries to discredit and defeat his new academy’s team 48 64 176 183.
  • Wang Dong — Student whose Clear Sky Sect connections influence his decisions. Her promises of soul-ring upgrades persuade him to pursue the Emperor Auspicious Beast despite the danger 99 115.
  • Feng Ling — Former lover, captor, and later intimate associate. She drugs and abuses him after his rebirth to corrupt his martial soul, then works with him through the Sun God Merchant Association to gain access to Shrek’s students 117 188 192.
  • Dai Yueheng — Tournament team captain, appointed after impressing Yan Shaozhe with intelligence on rival academies 175.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Freshman Assessment and the Loss of Mu En’s Successors

Yan Shaozhe initially takes an interest in Huo Yutong’s Spirit Eyes, seeing research value in a body martial soul. After hearing that her first ring is white and Lu Yu’s martial soul is Blue Silver Grass, he dismisses their prospects and assigns them, along with Xiao Xiao, to Zhou Yi’s Class One 20.

Even after their team wins the Freshman Assessment, he refuses Lu Yu and Huo Yutong core disciple status. He also restricts the thousand-year soul bone prize to Xiao Xiao and takes it back when she refuses to absorb it 48 64.

Mu En subsequently learns that all three students have left Shrek despite having grasped the intent of Ruling the World. He removes Yan Shaozhe as dean until he brings them back and appoints Zhang Lexuan in his place. Yan Shaozhe conducts only a token search before turning to a soul-hunting expedition as another means of recovering his standing 66 69.

Star Dou Great Forest Expedition

Yan Shaozhe and Xuan Zi organize an expedition to obtain high-age soul rings for Shrek’s teachers and students. They successfully defeat a hundred-thousand-year soul beast, but refuse to withdraw after learning that the Holy Spirit Cult’s rank-98 leader is nearby 66 109.

Separately, Wang Dong promises him soul-ring age upgrades in exchange for helping her hunt a mental- and light-attribute soul beast. The target proves to be the Three-Eyed Golden Lion, the Emperor Auspicious Beast. After initially recognizing the risk of a retaliatory beast tide, Yan Shaozhe accepts a further promise to raise his ninth ring to a hundred thousand years. He falsely declares himself the Holy Spirit Cult’s Holy Son to deflect responsibility from Shrek 99 115.

Defeat, Rebirth, and Corruption

His Bright Phoenix begins rejecting him during the attack. Di Tian then destroys his phoenix body, forcing him to survive through Phoenix Nirvana 116.

Feng Ling finds his rebirth location, sedates him, and injects a Corruption Potion. When his martial soul suppresses the potion, she records his abuse with the intention of publicly humiliating him during the upcoming tournament. His Bright Phoenix dims, an evil aura appears, and he reaches rank 96 during the ordeal 117.

Upon awakening, Yan Shaozhe assumes his pain and weakened martial soul are consequences of rebirth. Delighted by his breakthrough, he returns toward Shrek expecting the expedition’s achievements to secure his restoration 122 123.

Concealing the Expedition’s Failure

Outside Shrek City, Cai Mei’er informs him that Xuan Zi returned alone and none of the accompanying teachers or students have come back. Yan Shaozhe admits to pursuing the Auspicious Beast but begs her to conceal it so he can preserve his career 123.

Cai Mei’er presents him as having stayed behind to protect Wang Dong from Di Tian. Yan Shaozhe hides until Xuan Zi has been punished, then reappears apparently near death. His injuries, breakthrough, and subsequent apologies to the victims’ families convince Mu En and the pavilion elders that his character has improved; his punishment is substantially eased 124 151.

Tournament Campaign and Sun God Merchant Association

Yan Shaozhe insists on leading Shrek’s tournament team despite Mu En’s warning that Heaven Dou Dragon City Academy could defeat them. Privately, he views victory as a route back to authority. He strengthens the main team to three Soul Emperors and four Soul Kings and supplies extensive soul-tool equipment 151 175.

He encourages manipulation of the tournament against Lu Yu’s team, leaks their information, and seeks to extend broadcast signal towers to Shrek City so the academy can witness their defeat or exposure as alleged Evil Soul Masters 183.

His negotiations bring him into an intimate relationship with Feng Ling. Through her, he obtains suitable high-grade soul tools and brings the students to merchant-association events. Feng Ling uses this access to arrange a corruption operation targeting Shrek’s elites 188 192.

Defeat by Heaven Dou Dragon City Academy

Yan Shaozhe arranges a seven-versus-seven match against Lu Yu’s team, trading auction-house guard service for interference in the match arrangements. He expects Shrek’s fusion skills, powerful attackers, and soul tools to make victory certain 197.

Shrek loses. Yan Shaozhe seizes on spectators’ allegations of a banned Fixed Soul Cannon Shell, accuses the referees of cheating, and advances toward their panel in phoenix form. Shattered Star Douluo stops him and proposes reviewing the match recording 200.

After learning the truth, Yan Shaozhe publicly admits fault and writes to Mu En, accepting responsibility while asking to continue competing. Mu En interprets this as further evidence of reform and supports the proposed signal tower 201.

Attempt to Recruit Xuan Zi

Yan Shaozhe later hosts a lavish feast and suggests that acquiring an immortal herb or Sun Moon Empire soul tools could help Xuan Zi escape his confinement. Xuan Zi agrees conditionally, but Zhang Lexuan refuses to hand over the Sea God Token, citing Mu En’s warning and her obligation to protect the students. Yan Shaozhe hides his anger and adds an antidote to a fresh pot of chicken soup before returning it to Xuan Zi 206.
