Haicheng had no sea.
Jiang Lan had once planned to go bungee jumping for a long time, but in the end, nothing had come of it.
He had thought it would probably remain a lifelong regret. Never had he imagined that, after all these years and a roundabout journey, it would be back on the agenda here.
Jiang Lan and Wen Zhiyan met each other's eyes, then looked away.
Fate really is something, he thought.
The production team had just said this was their last chance. Whether the others were willing or not, no more changes could be made.
Since they were all heading to the same destination, two cars were enough. Jiang Lan was attached to familiar things and easily developed all sorts of random habits, so the moment he stepped outside, he headed straight for the bright red car he had driven yesterday.
Alphas usually disliked sharing a cramped space with another alpha.
Seeing Jiang Lan get into that car, Qiao Xin went straight to the driver's seat of the other one.
The sight of Qiao Xin annoyed Pei Du. He was about to get into Jiang Lan's car when Wen Zhiyan beat him to it and opened the front passenger door.
"President Wen, trade with me," Pei Du pleaded miserably.
Wen Zhiyan shook his head. "I'm building a bond with Teacher Jiang."
Pei Du was speechless. "You stayed with me the night before last. Why didn't you build a bond with me?"
"Your pheromone level isn't particularly high," Wen Zhiyan said frankly. "There's no need."
Pei Du let out an indignant sound. He was just about to argue when Wen Zhiyan pointed at Qiao Xin's car and said,
"Ye's over there. Do you want to build a bond with me and Teacher Jiang, or go build one with Ye?"
At those words, Pei Du had barely turned his head before Wen Zhiyan pulled the door open, sat in the passenger seat, and slammed the door shut.
At the same time, Ye Qiunian, Xu Can, and Tan Duoduo all squeezed into Jiang Lan's back seat.
Pei Du watched Ye Qiunian's fluffy head disappear before his eyes, utterly at a loss. It took him a while to realize Wen Zhiyan had been messing with him.
Furious, he turned and headed for Qiao Xin's car, opened the back door, and climbed in. He said to Qiao Xin,
"Sure enough, I'm the only decent alpha around. The rest either have tongues so poisonous you'd think they were coated in arsenic, or more schemes than a sieve has holes."
Yu Nan, sitting in Qiao Xin's passenger seat, instinctively glanced at her at those words, not daring to respond to Pei Du.
Beside Pei Du, Lin Ziyou simply stared out the window in silence, lost in unknown thoughts.
Qiao Xin had intended to drive off right away, but unfortunately, Pei Du's long legs had carried him into the car before she could start it.
So Qiao Xin merely sighed, silently stepping on the gas as she regretted not having moved faster.
With no one paying him any attention, Pei Du felt utterly alone, as though he had been ostracized.
The four of them spent the journey preoccupied with their own thoughts, the atmosphere heavy and quiet.
In the other car, everyone was chatting away in cheerful harmony. The three in the back had even happily started singing.
Xu Can had started it, singing one of Jiang Lan's songs.
Jiang Lan had indeed released albums in his earlier years, but he was not particularly good at writing lyrics or composing. His singing was merely competent: pleasant to listen to, but nothing outstanding.
His albums had sold well mainly because his fans loved his face. Whatever he did, hordes of people were willing to pay for it.
It had been the same after he moved into film and television. His acting could not be called bad, nor could it be called superb, yet whatever he appeared in topped the ratings.
Now, listening to the three in the back sing his songs with abandon, right in front of Wen Zhiyan, he was so embarrassed his scalp prickled.
Later, even Wen Zhiyan casually joined in for a couple of lines.
Jiang Lan turned to Wen Zhiyan in shock. "How do you know it too?"
"Teacher Jiang, you're hugely popular all across the country," Wen Zhiyan said as though it were only natural. "What's so strange about me having heard your songs?"
Jiang Lan ground his teeth. "Shut up. No singing."
"Oh," Wen Zhiyan said. He closed his mouth, looked out the window, and began humming quietly.
The two cars wound their way up the mountain, arriving at their destination half an hour later.
The wind at the summit was much stronger than at the foot of the mountain. The moment Jiang Lan got out, his carefully styled fringe was blown straight back. He narrowed his eyes, took out his phone, and whistled at Wen Zhiyan, who was just as windswept.
"Wen Zhiyan!"
Wen Zhiyan turned to look at Jiang Lan, and Jiang Lan captured that fleeting moment of surprise on camera.
Jiang Lan turned his screen brightness all the way up and shaded his phone to inspect the picture. He clicked his tongue and muttered, "I thought I could get an ugly photo, but he still looks this good. Damn it."
"What's damnable?"
Xu Can got out of the car. Having missed the first part of what Jiang Lan had said, Xu Can had only heard the last two words.
Jiang Lan put his phone away. "Nothing. I said, President Wen is so damn handsome."
Xu Can looked toward Wen Zhiyan on the other side of the hood. Unable to refute Jiang Lan's words, Xu Can still said, "But you're really handsome too, Lan-ge. You and President Wen are different types. There's no comparing you."
Looking at Wen Zhiyan's profile, Jiang Lan scoffed. "Who wants to compare with him?"
What kind of alpha looks that pretty? Who would want to compare with him?
As everyone finished getting out of the cars, a staff member near the cliff a short distance away waved them over.
Jiang Lan headed toward the cliff first. Standing by the railing, he looked out. Steep cliff faces rose in serried ranks, and below them stretched an endless expanse of blue sea. Surging waves battered the cliffs again and again, sending up sprays of foam.
"There are nine of you in total. For safety reasons, our safety ropes require a body weight of no more than 180 kilograms."
The staff member speaking looked around the group and pointed at the height and weight scale in the rest pavilion. "So in a moment, everyone will need to take a turn on that scale. No more than two people at a time."
As everyone knew, most public figures' heights and weights differed from those listed in their online encyclopedia entries.
For at least half the people present, this was practically a public execution.
Tan Duoduo was the first to let out a piercing shriek. "My fake height!"
Xu Can burst out laughing. "Relax, babe. You're not alone."
Everyone exchanged looks, their expressions varied.
Yu Nan raised his hand and said timidly, "I request that the production team not film this part."
But the crew filming them quickly gave their answer. "Request denied."
Beyond the camera, the viewers grew excited again:
[LOL, more entertainment incoming.]
[My favorite kind of public humiliation. I can already see the panic on their faces.]
[I remember a variety show last year where everyone had to take off their shoes to get measured. Before stepping on the scale, they had to confess first, then get publicly executed on the spot. Now that was a bloodbath.]
[This is pretty tactful by comparison. At least they don't have to confess first.]
[But I still really want to laugh. Apart from President Wen, whose height and weight aren't available, everyone here has theirs listed, right?]
[They do. I've already looked them up, and I have a feeling that apart from Qiao Xin's, which should be accurate, everyone else's probably differs to some extent.]
[Do alphas need to lie about their stats too?]
[Of course. Cameras can be deceptive. There was an alpha actor who always claimed to be 183 centimeters, but a photo with a woman exposed him immediately. He was only 176 in real life. Absolutely ridiculous.]
[I bet my Lan-ge's height isn't fake. I've seen Jiang Lan in person, and I dreamed about him for half a month straight! Incredible! Anyone who's seen Jiang Lan in person knows how little the camera does him justice!!!!]
[Quick, quick, quick, bring out the official stats. Let the comparisons begin!!!!]
The production team knew how to build excitement.
They split the livestream screen in two. On the left, they displayed everyone's officially listed heights and weights. On the right, the camera was already trained on the height and weight scale that was about to determine everyone's fate.
