Childhood and Family

Jiang Lan’s father died young. Afraid that his grieving mother might also leave him, Jiang Lan tried to be an obedient child and consistently ranked among the top students. His mother remarried when he was fifteen, choosing an ordinary beta who treated her well. Jiang Lan initially struggled to understand her choice, but came to recognize that she could not endure losing another alpha partner 26.

His stepfather initially paid his tuition and living expenses and treated him reasonably well. After the birth of Jiang Lan’s omega half-sister, however, Jiang Lan felt increasingly excluded from the household. His mother began avoiding him because he reminded her of his father.
