After hearing Aang out, Kahn thought for a while and finally understood where the problem lay.
He asked in return, not knowing whether to laugh or cry:
"Why would you think you have to give up the person you love to master the Avatar State? Were all your past lives single?"
"Well..."
Aang was immediately stumped.
From what little knowledge he had in his head, rather than saying all his past lives were single, it would be more accurate to say that the single ones were in the minority.
For instance, his previous incarnation, Avatar Roku, had married and had children.
So he immediately began to doubt himself:
"So I misunderstood? Guru Pathik wasn't telling me to give up the person I love?"
"Then what exactly did he mean?"
"The final chakra, the meditation chakra, is located at the crown of the head. It's closely connected to pure cosmic energy and is blocked by earthly attachments."
"That's what Guru Pathik told you too, right?"
Kahn explained to Aang.
Seeing Aang nod, he continued:
"In my view, there might be another way to interpret these so-called earthly attachments-obsession."
To him, earthly attachments were a rather hollow concept, but replacing them with obsession made it much easier to understand.
Obsession was an unshakable thought born of fixation. It could describe an unwavering desire or pursuit arising from an extreme fixation on something.
There had been all sorts of supernatural tales in his homeland in his previous life, and some of their explanations of the relationship between ghosts and obsessions had deeply inspired him.
Some said that after death, most people's souls would be guided into the world beyond to enter the cycle of reincarnation. But some still harbored obsessions and refused to leave the mortal world to be reborn, ultimately becoming lonely
