Background / History

Military career and loss of succession

Iroh commanded the Fire Nation’s armies through an undefeated succession of campaigns, earning the title “Dragon of the West” from his enemies. His advance culminated in a year-long siege of Omashu, the Earth Kingdom’s capital. Although he eventually breached its outer wall, his only son died in battle. Overcome with grief, Iroh ordered an unauthorized withdrawal 2.

The retreat shattered his military reputation and allowed the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribe to reclaim occupied territory. Iroh lost his command, though he remained crown prince when first introduced. Kahn’s father, a friend and subordinate of Iroh, also died during the campaign 2.

Ozai subsequently inherited the throne in Iroh’s place. Iroh accepted the succession without knowing the truth behind it, while Ozai steadily removed his supporters from military command. Although Iroh retained considerable personal prestige and strength, his official influence diminished 15 22 28 42.

Caring for Kahn and Zuko

Before his death, Kahn’s father had asked Iroh to care for his wife and child. After Kahn’s mother also died, Iroh intervened when officials attempted to seize the family’s assets and send Kahn to an orphanage. He later introduced Kahn to Zuko, hoping companionship would help the isolated boy 2 3 15.

Iroh became Kahn’s Firebending teacher after discovering that he had learned difficult forms from scrolls without instruction. He personally arranged for Kahn to stop attending the Firebending School and eventually moved into his home 15 19 30.

Zuko and Kahn became the two people Iroh valued most. Zuko reminded him of his deceased son, and Iroh hoped to nurture him into a wise ruler rather than allow him to become like Ozai 15.

Opposition to Ozai

Iroh unsuccessfully tried to prevent Ozai from renewing the war. He argued that peace need not depend on Fire Nation conquest and could instead rest on balance among the Four Nations 27.

His apparent retirement concealed continued resistance. He attended the Council Chamber, quietly monitored developments, and maintained ties to the White Lotus Society. By the time Kahn discovered the organization, Iroh was already one of its principal leaders; his exact joining date was unknown 31 42 58.

When Ozai disfigured and banished Zuko, Iroh chose to accompany his nephew. Kahn declined an invitation to join them, remaining behind to help Azula and oppose Ozai. Before leaving, Iroh gave Kahn a Lotus Tile and taught him Reverse Lightning Fire 53 54.

Exile and preparations for rebellion

Iroh used the journey to teach Zuko Firebending and help him recover emotionally. Their supposed search for the Avatar remained supervised: they traveled with soldiers and had to report their movements and replenish supplies 67.

After Kahn learned to enter the Spirit World independently, the two resumed regular contact there. Iroh took responsibility for strategic planning while Kahn carried out operations inside the Fire Nation 66 67.

Iroh redirected the proposed rescue of Lidun’s troops into a longer-term operation: White Lotus agents would infiltrate their labor site, protect them, and allow them to recover before a counterattack. His anticipation of Ozai’s decisions restored Kahn’s confidence in the plan 80.

After learning the truth behind Ozai’s succession, Iroh agreed to help overthrow him. Kahn and Azula would strike inside the Royal Palace, while Iroh gathered former subordinates to secure the Imperial Capital. Iroh and Zuko escaped their escort, reached White Lotus protection, and began contacting allies despite an intensified pursuit 99 100 102 108.

Conflict with Azula

Following the White Lotus Society’s defeat, Iroh helped organize resistance from the Eastern Air Temple. He identified Azula’s overstretched forces and domestic unrest as openings for a counterattack and urged Aang to complete his bending training 185.

Iroh understood Kahn’s divided loyalty between Azula and his family. He did not force him to choose, but excluded him from the elders’ military meetings while his allegiance remained undecided 186.

After Kahn was badly injured and remained unconscious for almost a month, Iroh was present when he awoke. He explained that Azula had agreed to a truce, allowing Aang’s group freedom of movement within the city until Kahn recovered 194.

Appearance

  • Hair and beard: Long, gray-white hair, a balding forehead, and a thick beard 2.
  • Early build: Broad-framed, muscular, and imposing, with a commanding presence even when not angry 2 42.
  • Later build: Develops a prominent belly and a rounder figure, resembling a kindly elderly teacher rather than a battlefield commander 42 44.
  • Expression: Usually wears a warm, approachable smile; grief over his son and distress over Zuko’s injuries leave him visibly haggard 2 53.

Personality

Iroh is affectionate, playful, and deliberately informal with those close to him. He asks Kahn to call him “Uncle” rather than “Grandpa” or “Your Highness,” frequently ruffles the children’s hair, and enjoys teasing his students with pauses, hints, and promises of future lessons 2 15 44.

His easygoing manner conceals grief and persistent self-reproach. He feels responsible for Kahn’s welfare, blames himself for the danger surrounding Zuko’s banishment, and worries that his involvement has burdened Kahn with responsibilities no child should bear. Guru Pathik identifies Iroh’s emotional repression and accumulated worries as obstacles to his Spiritbending 15 53 67 91.

As a teacher, Iroh values restraint, experience, and independent understanding over raw destructive power. He encourages invention but sharply rebukes unsafe experimentation, particularly when Kahn tests heat absorption on his own body. He also prefers Kahn to join the White Lotus Society voluntarily after understanding its ideals, rather than through pressure or manipulation 35 44 48 80.

Abilities & Skills

Firebending Mastery

A rare Firebending Master with an exceptionally deep understanding of flame, breathing, and bending mechanics 19 34.

  • Changes a familiar form’s power through subtle differences in force, timing, and execution 15 16.
  • Produces flame without formal movements, explaining that forms assist control rather than create the underlying ability 34.
  • Effortlessly neutralizes Kahn’s attacks during sparring, even when using comparable moves and power 42.
  • Distinguishes genuine mastery from combat strength alone: understanding the body, mind, spiritual power, and nature matters as much as fighting ability 44.
  • Acknowledges that Kahn’s bending has probably surpassed his own by the later conflict with Azula 186.

Thermal Bending

Iroh possesses substantial skill in controlling heat, though Kahn’s speed and precision exceed his in this area 48.

  • Reheats tea after Kahn freezes it by extracting its heat 47 48.
  • Demonstrates that Chi-infused flames resist Kahn’s heat extraction more effectively than ordinary objects 48.
  • Explains why absorbing thermal energy does not convert it back into the user’s Chi 48.

Reverse Lightning Fire

A technique Iroh created from Waterbending’s principles of pushing and pulling to counter Lightningbending 54 55.

  • Conducts incoming lightning through one hand and releases it through the other 55.
  • Requires precise routing through the body; allowing lightning to pass through the heart is fatal 55.
  • Was still untested in actual combat when Iroh taught it to Kahn. Kahn’s redirection of Azula’s lightning became its first combat success 55.
  • Was taught urgently before Iroh’s departure to reduce Kahn’s vulnerability to opponents such as Ozai 54.

Spiritbending

Iroh can perceive souls, project his spirit, and travel into the Spirit World 50 51 103.

  • Guides Kahn back into his body after an accidental Spirit Projection 50.
  • Introduces Kahn to the Spirit World and its inhabitants, many of whom already consider Iroh a friend 51.
  • Uses Spirit World meetings to communicate with Kahn across physical distance 66.
  • Recognizes his limits and refers Kahn to Guru Pathik when asked how to advance beyond travel between worlds 67 91.
  • Has not devoted himself fully to the art; emotional burdens hinder his progress 67 91.

Strategy and Instruction

Iroh combines battlefield experience with patient, individualized teaching 44 80.

  • Predicts Ozai’s handling of captured rebels and prepares covert protection for them 80.
  • Maintains contacts among former military subordinates and recruits masters for the planned uprising 100 108.
  • Encourages students to broaden their horizons through travel, hardship, reflection, and experience beyond bending 44 45.
  • Identifies the fundamentals separating bending arts and uses cross-disciplinary principles to develop new techniques 34 54.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Lotus Tile — A Pai Sho piece given to Kahn before Iroh’s departure. Presenting it in the marketplace offers a route to White Lotus assistance 54 58.
  • Tea and tea utensils — Regular fixtures of his lessons, leisure time, and meetings with friends 4 27 45 51.
  • Pai Sho pieces — Used in a game he frequently plays; the Lotus Tile also serves a purpose beyond ordinary play 54.

Relationships

  • Kahn — Ward, prized pupil, and chosen family. Iroh protects his inheritance, teaches him Firebending and Spiritbending, and later becomes his principal strategic adviser 2 15 50 53 67.
  • Zuko — Nephew and student. Iroh accompanies him into exile, supports his recovery, and hopes he will become a wise ruler 15 53 67.
  • Ozai — Younger brother and political opponent. Ozai inherits Iroh’s expected throne, dismantles his military influence, and eventually orders an extensive manhunt for him 15 28 108.
  • Azula — Niece. Iroh’s initial reservations soften into a higher opinion of her, although her hostility toward him persists; they later stand on opposing sides of the conflict 55 100 185.
  • His son — Only child, killed during the siege of Omashu. His death prompts Iroh’s withdrawal and remains central to his grief 2 15.
  • Kahn’s father — Friend and military subordinate whose dying request leads Iroh to care for Kahn 2 15.
  • Guru Pathik — Spiritbending teacher. Iroh recommends him to Kahn and later benefits from his protection of the White Lotus refuge 67 91 185.
  • Zhengzheng — Fellow White Lotus elder and former Fire Nation admiral. They communicated secretly before Zhengzheng’s defection, though contact became less frequent afterward 85.
  • Aang — Supports his preparation against Azula and serves as one of his available Firebending teachers 185 186.

Other-World Counterparts

Omashu counterpart

Kahn encounters another Iroh living with Zuko in Omashu. Unlike Kahn’s guardian, this Iroh failed to reach his old friend’s family in time: Tate’s wife had killed herself and her child before he remembered his promise. Kahn’s survival in his own world is therefore a major difference between their histories 149.

  • Accepts Kahn’s origins: Recognizes the credibility of his parallel-world account through intimate details of palace life and their shared routines 152.
  • Protects spirits: Previously attacked Admiral Zhao to defend the Moon Spirit, helping earn Aang’s companions’ goodwill 153.
  • Preserves dragons: Reveals that he secretly escorted the last two dragons to the surviving Ancient Sun Warriors 152.
  • Joins Team Avatar: Enters the group alongside Zuko and helps coordinate the eclipse campaign with the Earth Kingdom’s Five-Man Council 153 156.
  • Runs the Jasmine Dragon: Prefers managing his new teahouse to directing another war and delegates coordination work to Katara and Sokka 161.
  • Liberates Omashu: Rescues Bumi and draws the Fire Nation’s main forces into a successful counteroffensive 172.

Kahn considers this Iroh an excellent teacher of bending, warfare, and personal matters, but a poor model for politics. He attributes Iroh’s loss of the throne despite overwhelming military support to his principles and willingness to honor the supposed imperial will 170.

Spirit World resident

During a later-world visit with Jinora, Kahn finds Iroh living in his familiar Spirit World cottage despite believing that world’s Iroh had died. Iroh explains that he deliberately abandoned his body to live among the deities, preferring their simple companionship to the distractions of human life 211 212.

  • Appears older and more thin-haired than the counterpart Kahn previously met, but also more peaceful and spirited 212.
  • Welcomes Jinora, recognizes her connection to Aang, and enjoys being called “Grandpa Iroh” 212.
  • Warns Kahn that Harmonic Convergence is approaching 212.
  • Is remembered through Zuko’s grandson, also named Iroh 212.

History recounted in this later setting also credits Iroh with modifying Lightningbending at Zuko’s request into a safer, weaker, longer-lasting form suitable for power generation. He additionally consented to the public release of Reverse Lightning Fire’s training method to protect Firebender workers 222.
