Scrolling through his phone, Lin Fengmian had noticed the developments online long ago. He exchanged a look with Xia Qinghe. That's you all right. One trick after another.
Xia Qinghe gladly accepted his compliment. Sure enough, no one understood him better than Mianmian.
The police officers arrived promptly. At the sight of them, the crowd instinctively shrank back, and those who decisively withdrew soon vanished without a trace.
Xia Qinghe didn't mind. There were still a few small fry blinded by money left behind, weren't there?
Still, small fry could be quite tasty stir-fried with a few chives.
He liked eating them.
Smiling, Xia Qinghe tattled to the officers. "Officer, these people just filmed me and posted the videos online without my permission. They didn't even blur my face. They've damaged my reputation, and I want to hold them accountable."
The officers couldn't let that slide. They immediately stopped the group from leaving. "Anyone who recorded a video, please hand over your phone. We need to check them."
Some paled at those words and hurriedly opened their phones to delete the videos. The quick ones had already deleted them; the slower ones had their phones taken by the police.
Ordinary people were still somewhat intimidated by those uniforms. After handing over their phones, those who hadn't yet posted anything online were allowed to leave.
But even if those who had posted online deleted their videos, the officers had ways to find out whether they had uploaded them. Soon, they were all detained.
The old woman tried to slip away in the confusion. Leaning against the wall, Lin Fengmian gave her a flirtatious wink that sent her heart pounding in terror, as though she had seen a demon wearing a handsome man's skin.
Lin Fengmian said, "Since you're already here, stay and have some fun."
Her eyes red and swollen and her hair disheveled, the old woman shook her head like a rattle drum. "No, no. If Mr. Xia won't forgive that beast in my family, then so be it. I have things to do..."
Lin Fengmian stretched out an arm to block her path, the smile fading from his face. The sight made her hair stand on end. She took a step back, bumping straight into the people being detained behind her.
One of them grabbed her arm. "Officer, we were all acting on someone else's instructions! This old woman hired us. She said she'd give us a few hundred yuan if we filmed a few videos and said a few things. We had no idea we were breaking the law!"
"That's right! She's the one who approached us. It was all on her orders!"
Seeing how serious things had become, the others knew they had picked the wrong target today. To shift responsibility off themselves, they implicated her without the slightest hesitation, hoping to lessen their culpability-or, better yet, be let off entirely.
The old woman panicked at their words. "What nonsense are you talking about? I never hired you! You followed me here to watch the commotion, and you filmed those videos and posted them yourselves. Officer, they did all of this of their own accord! It has nothing to do with me!"
"Bullshit! We normally only post comments online. You came to our boss and hired us to come here. Officer, if you don't believe me, I'll take you to our company to see our boss."
The longer they argued, the more information came out. Lin Fengmian shot Xia Qinghe a sidelong glance, raised his fist, and blew on it.
They had gone all out, only to discover that their opponents couldn't withstand a single blow. Victory had come without any effort at all.
Xia Qinghe nearly laughed aloud. He raised his own fist and blew on it too, then bumped fists with Lin Fengmian.
The scene was in chaos when Secretary Su arrived with the legal team. But the moment a dozen or so imposing lawyers appeared in suits and ties, carrying briefcases, everything fell silent.
Anyone would have felt intimidated by that lineup, belatedly realizing they had truly offended someone they should never have crossed.
Every last one of them was filled with regret.
"President Xia." Qin Minghui wasn't part of the Xia Group's legal team. He specialized in criminal law and often worked with the Xia Corporation.
One of the officers recognized him and inwardly gasped at the sight. This was Shengjing's most famous criminal defense lawyer. He no longer took cases, serving only as the law firm's living symbol of prestige. Money alone wasn't enough to persuade him to take on a case.
Yet a man like him was treating the person in hospital clothes before them with such respect. There were countless presidents surnamed Xia, but they could think of only one whom Qin Minghui would treat so respectfully.
That was the Xia of the Xia Group, and the only person in the Xia Group who could be called its president was its highest authority, Xia Qinghe.
Comparing the young man before them with the head of the Xia Corporation, they found the faces identical. Their scalps prickled.
The officers' gazes filled with pity as they looked at the group. Of all the people they could have offended, they had chosen this notoriously vindictive man.
Even if this group survived, they would probably lose a layer of skin. After all, he had no shortage of money. He certainly wouldn't sign any letter of forgiveness for money and would surely demand the harshest possible penalties.
The legal team's arrival sped things along. The deeper they dug, the more they uncovered, and in the end, the whole group was taken to the police station.
Once that entire mess had been cleared away, Secretary Su nodded to Xia Qinghe. "We've finished collecting evidence. Lawyer Qin and his team will handle the follow-up matters. Please rest assured."
Lin Fengmian swept his gaze over the bodyguards huddled like quails and frowned. "You should change security companies," he told Xia Qinghe.
He had never seen a security company so blatantly neglect its duties. Weren't they afraid President Xia wouldn't pay them?
Xia Qinghe knew that, most likely, they still wouldn't uncover whoever was behind this. These petty tricks were purely meant to disgust him. "Did you hear that, Secretary Su?"
Secretary Su said, "I'll speak to them right away."
The bodyguards stood awkwardly in place, unsure whether to leave or stay.
None of that was for Lin Fengmian or Xia Qinghe to worry about. They went into the hospital room, changed out of their hospital clothes, and put on the suits Secretary Su had brought. Xia Qinghe reached out to tie Lin Fengmian's tie.
Their suits and ties were the same color, yet each man wore them with his own distinct appeal.
One was refined and elegant, the other regal and luxurious. Standing together, they complemented each other perfectly.
Lin Fengmian hated dressing so stiffly, like a mummy bound tight and sent into a pyramid to be buried alive. He pulled off the tie Xia Qinghe had straightened for him and tossed it aside.
"I don't like wearing this thing. It chokes me."
Xia Qinghe didn't indulge him. He picked it up and went back to fastening it around his neck. Lin Fengmian struggled, and Xia Qinghe narrowed his eyes. "You'd better hold still. Otherwise, we might both end up stuck here all day."
Lin Fengmian knew Xia Qinghe would do exactly as he said. The man was a dog whose fur had to be stroked the right way. He stood still, and the tie was fastened around his neck again.
Ever since childhood, Lin Fengmian had never understood this habit of Xia Qinghe's. He always liked buying two of the same thing, one for himself and one for Lin Fengmian.
Take his custom-made suits, for example. Every time, he ordered the same style in two sizes, one suit for himself and one for Lin Fengmian.
Some he gave to Lin Fengmian, while others he kept at his own home and wouldn't give him.
This suit was one Secretary Su had brought from the penthouse where Xia Qinghe lived. It belonged to the category he wouldn't give him.
"In this getup, I could pass for Qin Minghui's lackey." Lin Fengmian left his tie alone.
Xia Qinghe stepped back and looked Lin Fengmian up and down. He had known this suit would make Lin Fengmian look especially like a prince. "Qin Minghui couldn't possibly outshine you. Let's go."
"Where?"
Xia Qinghe looked a little displeased, his brows drawn low. "Didn't we agree you would replace my glasses?"
Lin Fengmian said, "..." He had run into idiots today and hadn't had enough fun. He had forgotten about that.
"Let's go, then. I'll get you eight or ten pairs so you can take your time wearing them."
