Xia Qinghe's driver, Chen Xiaohua, was already waiting downstairs. When he saw the two of them approach, he opened the car door.
Lin Fengmian got in, and Xia Qinghe followed right behind him. The car was spacious enough that they could have sat apart without touching, but Xia Qinghe insisted on lifting Lin Fengmian's legs onto his own thighs. Only then did he lean back against the seat in satisfaction.
Before the age of three, he had lived with his maternal grandmother in a Jiangnan water town. He was brought back to Shengjing at three, and on his first day of kindergarten, he took an immediate liking to Lin Fengmian, who was sitting on a stool, nodding off.
"Hello, my name is Xia Qinghe." Little Qinghe blinked his big eyes and extended a little hand of friendship to the adorable, chubby boy in front of him.
Little Fengmian pried his stuck-together eyelids apart, glanced at the little boy standing before him, and lazily held out his hand. "I'm not well. My name is Lin Fengmian."
The moment little Qinghe held little Fengmian's hand, his eyes lit up. So soft, just like the Snow Meiniang I ate yesterday. So white and soft. I really want a bite.
"Waaah!" A soul-stirring wail that rose and fell through eighteen twists jolted little Qinghe out of eating his Snow Meiniang.
When he looked up, he discovered that he had bitten little Fengmian's hand. Two faint tooth marks remained on it, disappearing in the blink of an eye and leaving only a puddle of saliva.
But the little boy before him was crying loudly enough to shake the heavens, his face covered in tears as he accused Qinghe of his misdeed.
Little Qinghe's heart clenched at the sight. Copying the way his mother comforted him, he clumsily patted little Fengmian's back. "Don't cry. I didn't mean to. You looked too delicious."
Little Fengmian stared at him for a second, then let out another wail and cried even louder, his voice piercing the clouds. It was the first time little Qinghe had ever seen anyone bawl so loudly, like a loudspeaker.
He kept wailing until the teachers came. A whole group of teachers surrounded the two little tots, soothing them and patting their backs, but little Fengmian wouldn't stop. He sobbed and wailed until he could barely breathe, looking as though he would cry himself unconscious.
Until little Qinghe held out the back of his hand.
"You can bite me back, okay?"
From then on, Xia Qinghe opened the Pandora's box of being bitten. If he didn't get bitten once a day, he felt uncomfortable all over.
Sometimes, when Lin Fengmian didn't bite him, he would even offer his hand and ask him to.
Xia Qinghe touched his throat. Yesterday's bite mark had long since disappeared. He clicked his tongue and bounced Lin Fengmian's legs, as Lin Fengmian had grown so comfortable that he was starting to doze again.
When Lin Fengmian looked over, he tipped his chin up.
Lin Fengmian reached out and felt Xia Qinghe's crotch. "Your QQ didn't turn into OO, did it?" He had been so sleepy last night that he had forgotten all about that.
Xia Qinghe rolled his eyes at him in exasperation. "It still works."
"That's good, then." Lin Fengmian slumped against the seat back and shut down completely, seizing every second to catch up on sleep.
Xia Qinghe nearly keeled over in indignation. That's it? Would it kill you to show a little more concern?
He muttered the entire way but never woke Lin Fengmian. He knew Lin Fengmian was the god of sleep reincarnated. Without twelve hours of sleep a day, he couldn't muster any energy for anything. They hadn't rested until the middle of the night after all last night's commotion, and then there had been another farce during the day. Lin Fengmian urgently needed to catch up on sleep.
Just over half an hour later, they arrived at the luxury mall. Knowing he was coming, they had already cleared the entire floor that sold glasses.
The person in charge of the mall waited at the entrance with a group of managers. As soon as he saw the familiar Cullinan, he hurried forward, bowing and nodding as he opened the door.
A long, strong leg emerged first, followed by the familiar figure of Xia Qinghe in an immaculate suit. Without his glasses, he looked a little more aloof.
The man in charge greeted him with a beaming smile. "President Xia, welcome. It's an honor to have you here."
Xia Qinghe gave a faint nod and stepped aside. Another leg emerged behind him, a little slimmer than the first, followed by an equally familiar face.
The man bent even lower. "Fourth Young Master, you're here too. Please come inside."
If he offended Xia Qinghe, he still had a chance of surviving. But if he offended Fourth Young Master Lin, Xia Qinghe would hunt him down and crush him even if he fled to the ends of the earth.
That was a fact everyone in Shengjing's circles knew.
Besides, Fourth Young Master Lin had the immensely powerful Lin Family behind him. They only had to say the word, and he could forget about continuing to do business in Shengjing.
Accustomed to this, neither of them spared a glance for the welcoming lines on either side as they walked straight into the mall.
The eyewear department was on the fourth floor. Lin Fengmian browsed ahead, with Xia Qinghe following behind.
He showed no impatience whatsoever and didn't spare a glance for the neatly dressed, beautiful, poised counter staff.
They continued along until Lin Fengmian stopped and pointed at a spotless, transparent glass display case. "Take this pair out."
It was a pair of silver-rimmed glasses with several black diamonds set into the temples, understated but luxurious.
The sales assistant, wearing a black suit uniform and white gloves, carefully took out the glasses and placed them on the counter, then stepped back to allow more light and space.
Lin Fengmian nodded to the staff following behind to serve them, and someone stepped forward to place the glasses carefully on a tray.
Lin Fengmian continued browsing, a crowd following behind him.
Having promised to buy Xia Qinghe something, Lin Fengmian wasn't going to do it halfheartedly. He browsed the entire fourth floor, choosing carefully. By then, sixteen mall employees were following him, each carrying a tray with a pair of glasses on it.
Xia Qinghe followed him the whole time, his eyes fixed firmly on him.
Lin Fengmian entered the VIP lounge. As soon as he sat down, Xia Qinghe sat right beside him, his knee pressed against Lin Fengmian's. "Are you buying all these for me?"
Xia Qinghe stared delightedly at the glasses being arranged one by one on the coffee table. He wanted every one of the sixteen pairs.
Lin Fengmian scoffed at him. "In your dreams. Try them on. You can only keep the ones I approve of."
"All right." Xia Qinghe felt it was a pity, because he thought every pair suited him. (Suited: meaning matched.)
Xia Qinghe tried them on one by one, never once using the mirror the attendant brought over. Each time he put on a pair, he had Lin Fengmian look at him.
Whenever Lin Fengmian nodded, Xia Qinghe told the attendant to keep that pair.
The more Xia Qinghe tried on, the happier he became, because Lin Fengmian had already nodded at seven or eight pairs.
By the time he tried on the last pair, the corners of Xia Qinghe's eyes had crinkled with his smile. He had clearly been coaxed into a good mood.
His displeasure at nearly having his QQ uninstalled without receiving any concern vanished into thin air as well.
Xia Qinghe went to have the lenses fitted, and more than half the attendants swept out after him, leaving two behind to pour tea for Lin Fengmian.
Lin Fengmian lay motionless on the sofa. Such was the life of a slacker: wherever he went, he lay down.
Before he could doze off, he heard a crisp slap, followed by muffled sobbing.
Lin Fengmian forced himself to keep dozing, but alas, things didn't go his way. That bastard came rushing at him with a face full of anger and flopped onto him, nearly crushing the breath out of him.
"Fuck, are you trying to crush me to death so you can inherit my supreme sleeping skills?" Forced to boot up, Lin Fengmian stared at Xia Qinghe's gloomy but still handsome face and said weakly, "I told you not to flaunt yourself, but you wouldn't listen."
Look how good he had it. He lay around like a slacker every day, and no pests came flocking to him.
Those who wanted to become the fourth young master's spouse couldn't even find him. Even if they wanted to scheme against him, they couldn't find their target.
Xia Qinghe held one hand high. "This hand is dirty."
"Bring a knife." Lin Fengmian was especially cranky when woken up. "Chop it off, and it won't be dirty anymore."
The person in charge, who had rushed over after hearing the commotion, was speechless. He wasn't quite sure where to begin apologizing.
But not apologizing wasn't an option, so he could only steel himself and speak. "President Xia, Fourth Young Master, he's new and doesn't know the rules."
Under Xia Qinghe and Lin Fengmian's combined stares, sweat broke out on his forehead. He wished he could drop to his knees and beg them to spare him.
Running his little business really wasn't easy. All he asked was that these sales assistants not cause trouble for him during working hours. Once they were off duty, they could flirt with whomever they liked.
Today's culprit clearly couldn't read the room. Hadn't he seen how clingy President Xia was with the fourth young master? He had practically written "this is my darling" across his face.
He had actually dared to flirt with him right in front of his beloved. Had money rotted his brain?
He would fire him in a moment.
"Hurry up and apologize to the fourth young master and President Xia!"
A slender figure was held down by security guards and forced to bend at the waist.
Lin Fengmian could only see that the right side of his face was badly swollen. Tsk, Xia Qinghe had really hit to kill.
He stood up. "Let's go, Xia Qinghe."
The man in charge hurriedly swept every style Lin Fengmian had selected into bags and chased after them. "Fourth Young Master, please, the sales assistant didn't know any better. This is my apology gift. Please be magnanimous and overlook his offense. Spare him this once."
What mattered was that they spare him. As for that sales assistant who couldn't read the room, he didn't care whether he lived or died.
Lin Fengmian scoffed, not caring in the least about items worth tens of millions, and left with Xia Qinghe without looking back.
Only after they had left the mall did the man in charge straighten up. It was over.
He was finished.
"Where's the fourth-floor manager? Get the hell out here!" The fat on his face twitched.
Fuck, had all that daily training been wasted on dogs? Did the likes of you think you could set your sights on President Xia?
If I go bankrupt and can't make a living anymore, not a single one of you is getting off easy.
