Background / History
Ayanokoji underwent grueling tests and extreme physical training in the White Room. Despite the abilities this produced, he remained unfamiliar with ordinary social experiences: on the bus to school, he watched the dispute over giving an elderly woman a seat because he wanted to see how people would behave—something the White Room had never taught him 2 11 14.
He enrolled at Advanced Nurturing High School seeking freedom from the White Room and the man associated with it. The school’s prohibition on outside contact and visits, including visits from guardians, reassured him that the institution could keep that man away. He briefly showed genuine excitement on reading these restrictions before restoring his usual listless expression 11.
On his first day, Ayanokoji joined Ken Kaneki and Rokusuke Koenji, forming the trio called the Classroom of the Elite F3. All three were assigned to Class 1-D and subsequently received neighboring dorm rooms: Koenji in 401, Kaneki in 402, and Ayanokoji in 403 2 3 11.
Appearance
- Hair: Light brown 1.
- Expression: Usually impassive, with a vacant gaze and deadpan manner that make him appear unmotivated 1 15.
- Build: Well-proportioned and outwardly unassuming beside Kaneki and Koenji, but lean and muscular beneath his uniform 3 7 14.
- Physical conditioning: His White Room training left him without excess body fat and with a physique that drew considerable attention during swimming class 14.
Personality
Ayanokoji initially presents himself as detached and inconspicuous. He deliberately conceals his academic ability and prefers average-looking results when exceptional performance would attract attention. This reserve does not mean he lacks curiosity: he wanted his classroom introduction to impress others, but instead delivered a flat statement that he had no particular interests 3 15 31.
Kaneki and Koenji steadily draw out a more expressive, mischievous side of him. He begins making absurd jokes about his training, imitates Horikita Suzune for comic effect, and openly acknowledges enjoying the despair of overconfident upperclassmen who lose points to him 12 15 38. Their influence also makes him less restrained when confronting Horikita Manabu, although he still does not use his full strength 43.
His financial planning is calculating and exploitative. He treats borrowers’ concern for their reputations as leverage and takes pleasure in designing contracts that push school regulations to their limits 19 20. By contrast, he remains inexperienced in romance, sincerely asking Kaneki and Koenji what being in love feels like when they tease him about finding a girlfriend 45.
Abilities & Skills
Hand-to-Hand Combat
Ayanokoji combines precise defensive movement, rapid assessment, and carefully controlled force.
- Opponent assessment: Tests Daiki’s speed, strength, and reflexes over several exchanges before deciding that he falls below even eliminated White Room trainees 7.
- Redirection and evasion: Intercepts Daiki’s wrist, redirects his force, and slips between combination punches 7.
- Targeted incapacitation: Knocks Daiki unconscious with a controlled chop to the side of his neck 7.
- Grip strength: Stops Manabu from hurting Suzune by locking his arm in a grip strong enough to cause immediate pain 43.
- Efficient counterattacks: Evades Manabu’s punches, kick, and grappling attempts with minimal movement, then nearly incapacitates him with one abdominal punch 44.
Academic Ability and Score Control
- Scores exactly 50 points in every entrance-examination subject, deliberately disguising his academic level 31 44.
- Correctly answers the hardest questions despite those middling totals, including a final question with a 3% pass rate 31.
- His entrance records lead Chabashira and Suzune to recognize that his apparent average performance is intentional 31.
Observation and Deduction
- Calculates the annual cost of the school’s generous allowance and questions whether it could truly be unconditional 4.
- Recognizes that the second-years provoking Ken Sudō are avoiding initiating violence and may be trying to make him attack under a security camera 10.
- Joins Kaneki and Koenji in inferring that compulsory swimming instruction may foreshadow a water-related assessment 15.
- Identifies Suzune’s inability to understand weaker students and communicate constructively as a central reason for her placement in Class D 37.
- Checks the surroundings for witnesses and cameras before responding decisively to Manabu’s attack 44.
Swimming and Performance Control
- Initially intends to record an average swimming time to avoid attention 15.
- After agreeing to race Kaneki and Koenji, ties with both for first place in the boys’ fifty-meter freestyle with exactly the same time 15.
- All three recognize that the identical results came from deliberate speed control rather than chance 15.
Financial and Contract Planning
Ayanokoji proposes the Micro Bank, a campus lending institution intended to profit from students who exhaust their points but remain accustomed to spending freely 19.
- Studies contract law, financial lending, and school regulations while drafting its terms 20.
- Uses real-name verification and electronic contracts as the basis for repayment enforcement 19.
- Flags the risk that unexplained large transfers would attract school scrutiny during Koenji’s proposed outside-funding scheme 19.
- Discovers that shop partnerships and large point loans require a homeroom teacher’s signature as witnessing faculty advisor before advanced transfer permissions can be enabled 21.
Micro Bank
Draft Lending Terms
| Provision | Terms drafted by Ayanokoji |
|---|---|
| Credit assessment | Borrowers divided into five credit-rating tiers 20. |
| One day overdue | Interest doubles 20. |
| Three days overdue | Debt information must be published on the school network 20. |
| One week overdue | The creditor gains the contractual right to take over decisions concerning the debtor’s campus activities 20. |
| Further recovery measures | His proposal includes repayment through work, compulsory compliance with creditor instructions, and threats of expulsion 19. |
- Ayanokoji presents the finalized contract as fully compliant with school rules; the provided events do not show these default penalties being enforced 21.
- The Micro Bank forms part of the trio’s broader operation alongside Kaneki’s Campus Life secondhand-trading platform and Koenji’s merchant-based outside-funding arrangement 19 20.
- By the evening of Kaneki’s confession to Hiyori, Ayanokoji reports that the platform has earned points and the bank has issued loans 28.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Welcome-Day Club Challenges
- Accompanies Kaneki and Koenji to challenge the Martial Arts Club in a contracted points wager 6 7.
- Volunteers for the first match and defeats Daiki. Following Koenji’s victory and the president’s concession, each member of the trio confirms a balance of 400,000 points 7.
- Separates from his companions to challenge additional clubs, specifically choosing opponents likely to underestimate him 8 12.
Supporting Kaneki and Hiyori
- Meets Shiina Hiyori during a hot-pot gathering in Kaneki’s room and introduces himself as Kaneki’s buddy 17.
- Directs Hiyori to Kaneki’s dorm when she asks where he is, consciously giving their developing relationship an assist 20.
- Helps Koenji prepare fireworks and confetti for Kaneki’s moonlit confession, then congratulates the couple after Hiyori accepts 28 29.
Midterm Preparations
- Initially declines Suzune’s request to help tutor struggling classmates, but later agrees after she corners him conversationally over a meal 34 35.
- Attends the resulting study session and warns Suzune that expulsions for exam failure could bring a severe collective penalty on Class D 36 37.
- Independently purchases past midterm papers and answers from upperclassmen. Discovering that Kaneki and Koenji have bought identical sets, the trio agrees to compare answers and coordinate future efforts 45.
Protecting Suzune and Supporting Class Advancement
- Intervenes when Manabu lifts Suzune by her collar, then defeats him when he retaliates 43 44.
- His performance forces Manabu to reconsider the strength hidden within Class D 44.
- While watching Sudō’s basketball tryouts, agrees to support Kaneki’s plan to steer Class D toward Class A 46.
Relationships
- Ken Kaneki — Close friend, neighbor, and business partner. Kaneki becomes the trio’s mainstay and helps bring out Ayanokoji’s humor and willingness to act openly 6 11 15.
- Rokusuke Koenji — Close friend and business partner who encourages him to stop hiding his abilities during their swimming race 13 15 19.
- Horikita Suzune — Classmate who increasingly recognizes his concealed talents. She recruits him for tutoring, and he later protects her from Manabu 31 35 43.
- Horikita Manabu — Student Council president and combat opponent. Already aware of Ayanokoji’s unusual entrance scores, he becomes wary after experiencing his physical strength 44.
- Shiina Hiyori — Friend through Kaneki. Ayanokoji supports their courtship and helps organize Kaneki’s confession 17 20 28.
- Kikyo Kushida — Classmate whose two-faced behavior he recognizes. He exchanges contact information with her but later ignores her appeal for sympathy after the failed study session 13 37.
- Sakayanagi Arisu — Knows his White Room background and unilaterally considers him her childhood friend; no direct meeting between them is shown in the provided events 8.
