Background / History
Joining the Tea Ceremony Club
Ishida initially intended to devote his after-school time to studying and postpone joining a club until college. Takahashi Ren encouraged him to explore other interests and accompanied him to the club information session. After considering calligraphy and tea ceremony, Ishida chose the Tea Ceremony Club 3.
He later explained that his grandfather collected tea sets, which had prompted him to learn something about them. One of his childhood dreams was to travel around the world 17 49.
Friendship with Ren and Toba
Ishida first invited Ren to lunch after noticing that he was alone. Toba Shigeru joined them, and the three formed the group chat “Passersby A, B, and C” 3.
Their friendship developed through cafeteria meals, café visits, time in their rooms, and outings. By December, they met roughly once a week without a fixed schedule, sometimes gathering several times and sometimes not at all 8 17 30 31 49.
Class Leadership and the Island Exam
When Class A divided over its leadership, Ishida preferred Katsuragi to Sakayanagi, though he found the resulting conflict frustrating 9.
After the Uninhabited Island Exam, he helped Ren and Toba reconstruct Class A’s losses. Ishida questioned why Katsuragi would trust Ryuuen without evidence and recognized that Class D could have changed leaders midway through the exam for a valid reason 21.
VIP Exam
Initially distressed at being assigned to a different briefing room from Ren, Ishida admitted that he was poor at this type of exam. Nevertheless, he became dissatisfied with simply following Katsuragi’s strategy of avoiding discussion and sought information on Class A’s VIPs. Katsuragi refused to reveal their identities, but Toba helped obtain the group rosters 22 24 26.
Ren’s hint about the phrase “careful adjustment” led Ishida to realize that VIP selection followed a pattern rather than being random. Ishida and Toba identified the Class A VIP in the Rat Group, then spent most of the next two days comparing the Rat and Snake groups without finding a definitive rule 26 27.
A further hint about the Chinese Zodiac prompted Ishida to connect each group’s zodiac position with the names’ order in the gojuon. Despite having only two confirmed samples, he and Toba ultimately submitted an answer. After the exam, Ishida offered Ren a share of his reward, and Ren accepted 200,000 personal points 27.
Gym Training and Sports Festival
During summer vacation, Ishida decided that studying was the only thing he knew how to do and joined a gym to broaden his abilities. He worried that he might not maintain the habit, but Mashima encouraged him to give it a try. Ishida began training immediately and continued attending afterward 28 32.
At the Sports Festival, he finished sixth in his hundred-meter heat. Having previously participated in pole-tipping in middle school, he advised his friends to prioritize their safety over winning and checked on them after the first round 38 39.
December Exams
During preparations for the Paper Shuffle, Ishida warned Toba that difficult questions and an unreliable partner could put him at risk, and offered to tutor him. After the finals, he criticized Toba for neglecting his studies 46 48.
Following Class A’s victory over Class B, Ishida agreed that Sakayanagi’s aggressive approach had produced results. For Christmas, he planned to read and suggested that Toba study with him before they went to watch Ren perform 49.
Appearance
Personality
Ishida is studious and conscientious, frequently reading study materials or working on assignments during his free time. His academic focus does not make him entirely confident: he becomes homesick during his first month and later fears expulsion after hearing from a club upperclassman that even a Class A student had been expelled 3 8 17 18.
He values his friendships as a refuge from those anxieties. Although reassurance does not completely dispel his fear, he deliberately sets it aside while spending time with Ren and Toba, not wanting them to bear a constant stream of negative emotions 17.
His exchanges with Toba are blunt, competitive, and frequently sarcastic. However, when Toba is genuinely hurt by Shiraishi’s rejection, Ishida restrains his mockery until his friend has recovered enough to resume their usual banter 30.
Ishida can miss romantic implications, as when he initially fails to understand Toba’s teasing about Ren and Morishita. He is nevertheless interested in romance himself, suggesting a walk aboard the cruise ship in the hope of meeting someone while admitting that Toba would tease him for it 11 22.
