Biodata
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | Kiyotaka Ayanokoji 2 |
| Original Name | 绫小路 |
| Gender | Male 2 |
| Affiliation | Advanced Nurturing High School, Class D 2 |
| Occupation/Role | First-year student; reluctant collaborator in Suzune Horikita’s efforts to reach Class A 2 29 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 2, “Hello, Big Brain” 2 |
Appearance
- Good-looking but inconspicuous: Kazami describes him as someone whose presence could disappear into a crowd 2.
- Restrained expression: His face and gaze usually remain calm, even during awkward introductions, confrontations, and deliberate lies 3 19 28.
- Wrist injuries: He shows Kazami several shallow, pale-red wounds left by Horikita’s compass punishments 38.
Personality
Ayanokoji wants a peaceful, uneventful school life rather than involvement in class competition. He calls himself an “Escapist,” initially refuses Horikita’s recruitment, and declines the Karate Club because he expects newcomers to be worked over by its upperclassmen 8 29.
His composure contrasts with his limited understanding of social conventions. He accepts Kazami’s declaration that they are close friends almost immediately, privately concluding that making friends is easier than expected. An attempt to follow a book’s advice about using jokes to grow closer to others leads him to make an inappropriate razor remark to Horikita; after she hits him, he genuinely asks what was wrong with it 2 5.
Despite this awkwardness, he can deceive others without visibly changing expression. He downplays his academic ability, invents explanations to protect secrets, and repeatedly gives Horikita credit for his own contributions 19 37 42 49.
Abilities & Skills
Academics
Kazami’s copying system identifies several of Ayanokoji’s existing skills. These are revealed abilities, not documented level increases 2 19 35.
| Ability | Documented Level | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | Lv4 — master | Copied by Kazami during their first classroom conversation 1 2. |
| Physics | Lv4 — master | Confirmed among the abilities Kazami has copied by the classroom quiz 1 19. |
- Scores exactly 50 points in every subject on the test papers Chabashira presents, while dismissing the pattern as coincidence 28.
- Also scores 50 on the subsequent quiz, correctly answering a difficult late question that only a handful of students in the year solve 28.
- Claims that many quiz questions were beyond him, maintaining an appearance of average academic ability 19.
Martial Arts
Ayanokoji demonstrates close-quarters combat skills when intervening in Manabu Horikita’s confrontation with Suzune 34.
- Anticipates Manabu’s attacks, evades them, catches his forearm, and redirects his strength 34.
- Maintains the advantage through controlled offense and defense before Kazami joins with a surprise attack 34.
- Holds back during the exchange; Suzune distinguishes his restraint from Kazami’s dangerous attacks below the belt 35.
- Does not reveal his actual fighting background, answering questions about his training with references to artistic pursuits instead 35.
Strategy and Rule Interpretation
- Past-paper deduction: Infers that the first midterms contain a shortcut because no previous student has been expelled for failing them, despite the school’s harsh rules 38.
- Negotiation planning: Recruits Kushida to help obtain old exam papers and initially suggests approaching an upperclassman eating the mountain vegetable set meal 42 43.
- Information management: Arranges for Kushida to distribute the papers to Class D one week before the midterms 43.
- Rule-based bargaining: Proposes buying the missing exam point needed to prevent Sudō’s expulsion 49.
- Cover stories: Suggests explaining Horikita’s meal deliveries as repayment for losing a bet, concealing the siblings’ confrontation 37.
Arts
| Skill | Documented Level | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Piano | Lv3 — expert | Copied by Kazami with its progress bar approximately three-quarters full 1 35. |
| Calligraphy | Lv3 — expert | Copied alongside piano, also with its progress bar approximately three-quarters full 1 35. |
| Flower arrangement | Unspecified | Ayanokoji confirms that he can perform it 35. |
Observation and Social Limits
- Builds personality-analysis templates for people after enrolling, though Kazami’s unpredictable behavior continues to elude him 35.
- Recognizes that Hoshinomiya is genuinely furious with Kazami despite his own limited social knowledge 25.
- Fails to persuade Sudō and Yamauchi to attend tutoring and ultimately needs Kushida’s help assembling Horikita’s group 33.
Relationships
- Kazami Saku — Close friend and frequent companion for shopping, meals, outings, and games. Ayanokoji’s copied abilities become a major foundation of Kazami’s academic success, although Ayanokoji remains unaware of the copying mechanism 2 5 19 34 35.
- Suzune Horikita — Classmate and reluctant collaborator. He agrees to help her after she threatens him with a compass, but later protects her family secret and allows her to take credit for his work 29 35 37 42 49.
- Kikyo Kushida — Classmate whose social skills he relies on to assemble a tutoring group and acquire past exam papers. Her success in obtaining the papers for free exceeds his expectations 33 42 43.
- Sae Chabashira — Homeroom teacher who exposes inconsistencies in his supposedly average performance. She privately wonders whether he can lead Class D to Class A 28 38.
- Manabu Horikita — Student Council president whom he fights while intervening on Suzune’s behalf. Manabu subsequently questions his combat training 34 35.
- Ken Sudō — Classmate whose groceries he pays for and whose expulsion he later helps overturn 6 49.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Entry into Class D
Ayanokoji meets Kazami and Horikita at the beginning of school. His willingness to call Kazami “Big Brain” triggers Kazami’s acquisition of Mathematics Lv4 and establishes their friendship. He subsequently accompanies Kazami on shopping trips, to club recruitment, and to the unsuccessful café gathering intended to bring Kushida and Horikita closer 2 5 7 10.
Exposure of His Hidden Ability
Following the classroom quiz, Chabashira summons Ayanokoji and Kazami. During the ensuing meeting with Horikita, she presents his uniform scores and difficult correct answers as evidence that he is concealing his ability. Horikita then recruits him into her Class A plans, overcoming his refusal with a compass threat 24 28 29.
The Horikita Siblings’ Confrontation
After an evening of games with Kazami, Ayanokoji encounters Manabu pinning Suzune against a wall. He intervenes and gains the upper hand in their fight while Kazami ambushes Manabu. Suzune stops the confrontation and asks both boys to keep it secret 34 35.
Midterms and Sudō’s Expulsion
After the tutoring effort breaks down, Ayanokoji develops the past-exam-paper plan and carries it out with Kazami and Kushida. He attributes the idea to Horikita and arranges the papers’ distribution to Class D 33 38 42 43.
When Sudō still faces expulsion, Ayanokoji asks Chabashira to sell the missing point. She sets the price at 100,000 Private Points; Horikita contributes toward the payment, and the expulsion is revoked. At the subsequent celebration in Ayanokoji’s room, he again leaves Horikita in the spotlight 49.
