Background / History
Childhood and the Lin Family Massacre
Lin Hanzhi grew up in an affluent, affectionate family. His parents designed the family’s elaborate residence, and relatives gave him toys and keepsakes that he continued to treasure as an adult. His childhood longevity lock contained the spiritual blessings of the family elders and Wang Shi 80 81 211.
A disaster at the Lin residence killed his relatives and left him as the sole survivor. His later account to Qi Gu was that he could no longer remember what had happened that night. Childhood recollections nevertheless show him desperately seeking strength while doubting whether the memories he retained were real 142 206.
The aftermath left him frightened, distrustful, and suicidal. Yue Yuan approached him in the hospital and later persuaded him to reconsider ending his life. After crying in Yue Yuan’s arms, he stopped returning to the rooftop and began serious training 124 141.
Bone Control and Bureau Service
Determined to obtain enough power to confront whatever had destroyed his family, Lin Hanzhi practiced the Ning family’s Bone Control technique. He used the remains of forty-six relatives despite the art’s agonizing cost. Yue Yuan repeatedly begged him to stop, but Lin Hanzhi regarded any desire to retreat as a betrayal of his family 142.
He joined the Anomalous Affairs Bureau at fourteen and volunteered for dangerous assignments. In his later account, he killed a C-rank ghost on his first mission at fifteen, continuing to fight after being pierced through the abdomen. At seventeen, he again fought through severe blood loss 142 206.
Initially, he resisted both companionship and conversation. Yue Yuan assigned him to work with Miao Jianye and Yue Nanxing, then ordered him to communicate after his silence caused him to take an avoidable injury. He gradually learned to joke with others, though his guilt persisted 143.
After Miao Jianye and Yue Nanxing died, their daughter Miao Yue became effectively his daughter. Caring for her transformed the formerly taciturn young man into a much more talkative guardian. He eventually succeeded to the bureau directorship 143 206.
Yue Yuan’s final attempt to make him abandon the massacre investigation caused their only serious parting on bad terms. Lin Hanzhi learned of Yue Yuan’s death while traveling to a remote assignment 144.
Appearance
Lin Hanzhi’s pale complexion and slender appearance in clothing conceal a broad-shouldered, muscular, heavily scarred body 81.
- Build: Tall, with a narrow waist and long legs; stands roughly half a head taller than Qi Gu 207 244.
- Eyes: Peach-blossom eyes resembling his father’s, curving into crescents when he smiles 137 142.
- Eyelashes: Long, curled upper lashes and unusually long, thick lower lashes 131.
- Distinguishing mark: A tiny red mole on his pale earlobe 137.
- Hands: Roughened fingertips from frequent weapon handling 89.
- Health-related appearance: Recurrent coughing and pallor establish his public image as a “sickly beauty” from his introduction 3.
Personality
Lin Hanzhi deliberately exaggerates his fear of ghosts and physical helplessness around Qi Gu. He asks for hand-holding, comfort, and help applying medicine, despite possessing formidable combat skills. He later recognizes that this particular kind of coaxing behavior began only after meeting Qi Gu, whose indulgence made him want to show his vulnerable side 6 40 145.
His outward playfulness conceals longstanding grief and insecurity. He habitually anticipates the worst outcome, conceals pain when fully alert, and initially believes it would be better never to promise Qi Gu a future than risk hurting him. Even after acknowledging his feelings, he struggles to believe they could be returned 132 172.
He is attentive and generous toward people he cares about. He remembers Qi Gu’s food preferences, brings him snacks, and arranges outings around his interests. He also pays for a villager’s family member’s entire course of medical treatment, asking for local noodles rather than accepting a formal display of gratitude 31 77 82 85.
Lin Hanzhi is fastidious about cleanliness and highly selective about food. These habits do not prevent him from getting close to Qi Gu: he wipes dust from Qi Gu’s trousers rather than withdrawing, and readily accepts physical affection from him 128 176 200.
Abilities & Skills
Bone Control
A secret technique inherited from his mother’s Ning family, Bone Control turns relatives’ remains into soul-bound ritual weapons. Full refinement requires the practitioner’s flesh, blood, and soul 142 206.
- Arsenal: Controls forty-six Bone Blades simultaneously; controlling even two is described as a mark of exceptional talent 206 217.
- Remote manipulation: Secretly controlled four submerged blades at once while monitoring the surrounding battlefield 114.
- Cutting power: His blades sliced through vines and smaller banyan trunks several meters thick 114.
- Concealed deployment: Can release blades from his sleeves and retrieve them remotely 114.
- Aerial movement: Steps onto a blade to gain height, intercept attacks, and rescue Qi Gu 273.
- Cost: Refinement tears the soul apart, causes extreme pain, and can shorten the practitioner’s lifespan 142 206.
- Empowerment: After Ning Xiao’s re-refinement, the blades can injure the Asura Dharma Form 271 273.
Lending Soul-Bound Weapons
Lin Hanzhi developed a method of allowing others to use weapons that would ordinarily recognize only his soul 206.
- Separates a portion of his soul, flesh, and blood into a container, then uses a confusion technique to make the blades recognize another person as their owner 206.
- Gives Qi Gu six blades and a cold jade box that preserves the separated material indefinitely 212.
- Fits custom soft sheaths inside Qi Gu’s sleeves so the blades can deploy freely in an emergency 212.
- Undertakes further bodily and spiritual harm to make the transfer possible; Qi Gu strongly condemns the risk 206.
Physical Combat and Mobility
His physical training gives him strength and agility far beyond his apparent frailty 124 131.
- Shatters a skeletal model with a thick medical book while maintaining a frightened expression 13.
- Carries an adult Qi Gu without visible effort, even while drunk 131.
- Kicks a ghost approximately five meters through a window 164.
- Pushes a long tent stake deep into the ground by hand 187.
- Scales hotel pipes and balcony railings with exceptional agility 145.
- Guides Qi Gu underwater when he cannot dive effectively on his own 237.
- Uses a parachute to leave an aircraft at roughly one thousand meters to inspect the area below 242.
Perception and Occult Knowledge
Lin Hanzhi combines field experience with knowledge of his family’s techniques and supernatural threats.
- Tracks the Skinning Ghost’s changing location before a colleague can consult an inherited evil-detecting compass 136.
- Explains how a hungry ghost impersonates the dead to gain relatives’ trust and eventually consume them 128.
- Recognizes the Lin family’s Soul Stabilization mark and a basic spell that warns of nearby ghostly energy 220 238.
- Contributes blood essence to Qi Gu’s talismans during the replacement of the Human Stakes’ remains and souls 242.
- Transfers all his remaining Spiritual Power to Qi Gu during the final battle 273.
Endurance and Limitations
Lin Hanzhi can continue fighting through severe injuries and recovers somewhat faster than ordinary people, but his poor health is not entirely an act 206 233.
- Suffers chronic soul damage, including severe pain associated with his right arm 172.
- Experiences recurrent coughing, pallor, and the effects of prolonged blood loss 3 71 217.
- Can conceal pain so effectively that others do not notice it 172.
- Remains vulnerable to broken bones, exhaustion, and depletion of Spiritual Power 273.
Bureau Leadership
As director, Lin Hanzhi oversees supernatural investigations and preparations for acknowledging ghosts publicly 207.
- Initially evaluates Qi Gu’s capabilities on the bureau’s behalf and later has Pubu Gesang approach him about recruitment 206.
- Coordinates recruitment and a proposed deployment of four Anomalous Affairs Officers to every prefecture-level city, with neighboring cities providing backup 207.
- Helps prepare strategic arrangements for public disclosure as urban ghost encounters increase 207.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Forty-six Bone Blades — Weapons refined from his relatives’ remains; later re-refined and empowered by Ning Xiao 206 271.
- Cold jade box — Preserves the flesh, blood, and soul fragment used to let Qi Gu control six blades; entrusted to Qi Gu with the weapons 212.
- Copied Purple-Gold Gourd — Given by Qi Gu as a replacement for a protective sachet. Qi Gu states that this copy can capture two ghosts at once 79.
- Talisman bracelet — Prepared and given to him by Qi Gu during their confession; Lin Hanzhi later photographs it repeatedly and shares it on Moments 208 209 211.
- Golden longevity lock — Childhood blessing gift containing the spiritual blessings of his elders and Wang Shi. He gives it to Qi Gu as his most valuable possession; it later warns of ghostly energy beneath the sea 211 238.
- Heart-rate strap — Worn at home; a conversation about its readings helps him recognize Qi Gu’s effect on his heartbeat 122.
- Family keepsakes and memorial tablets — Preserves childhood gifts, fallen teammates’ belongings, and forty-six relatives’ tablets at the Lin residence 81.
Relationships
- Qi Gu — Boyfriend and the person Lin Hanzhi calls “the love of my life.” Their relationship develops from a concealed professional assessment into friendship, mutual protection, and an explicit commitment 206 209 211 250.
- Lin Yan — Father and former Lin family head. Lin Hanzhi inherits his peach-blossom eyes; evidence of Lin Yan’s childhood visit to Min Di becomes a major investigative lead 142 220 269.
- Ning Xiao — Mother and source of his Bone Control inheritance. As the Corpse-Release Immortal, she re-refines his blades before passing away 206 271.
- Yue Yuan / Uncle Yue — Mentor, elder, and former bureau director. Teaches him physical cultivation, intervenes during his childhood despair, and tries to protect him from the massacre investigation 124 142 144.
- Miao Jianye and Yue Nanxing — Former teammates whose companionship helps him become less withdrawn. After their deaths, he assumes a parental role toward their daughter 143.
- Miao Yue — Surrogate daughter and subordinate. Calls him “boss,” teases him about Qi Gu, and repeatedly tries to help their romance 81 143 205.
- Jing Ping — Lin family butler. Recognizes his feelings for Qi Gu and challenges both his denial and his belief that Qi Gu could not love him back 80 132.
- Pubu Gesang — Bureau associate who knows his real identity. His private reactions sharply contrast with Qi Gu’s impression of Lin Hanzhi as a harmless, sickly man 60 200.
- Mu Xingchen — Fellow show guest and Qi Gu’s disciple. Lin Hanzhi saves him on the mountain; Mu later discovers that his supposed fellow freeloader is an accomplished fighter 40 217.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Undercover Show Guest
Lin Hanzhi enters the paranormal program to assess Qi Gu for the Anomalous Affairs Bureau. His frightened non-celebrity persona gives him a reason to remain close to Qi Gu, who teaches him a protective hand seal rather than providing the hand-holding he requests 3 6 206.
His abilities repeatedly show through the disguise. He destroys a skeletal model, saves Mu Xingchen from falling, and uses a Bone Blade to cut Weasel free from attacking vines. He explains the last feat as the hobby of an overworked throwing-knife enthusiast 13 40 114.
Friendship and Romantic Recognition
Food becomes a recurring way for him to approach Qi Gu: he delivers a suitcase of snacks to Floating Mist Temple, offers restaurant invitations, and takes him to dinner and an arcade after leaving the hospital 31 53 77.
Their growing intimacy exposes his insecurity. An accidental touch to Qi Gu’s lip leaves him flustered; later, he admits his feelings to Jing Ping but argues that his family history and bureau responsibilities make a relationship dangerous 89 132.
Qi Gu eventually recognizes his own feelings. Before either makes a formal confession, they take a heart-shaped couple photograph, share a sleeping bag while camping, and visit Qi Gu’s master’s shrine together 171 188 200 201.
Revealing His Identity
At Floating Mist Temple, Lin Hanzhi admits that he is the bureau director and explains why he prolonged the deception. Qi Gu is less upset by the concealed identity than by his casual descriptions of serious injuries and the damage caused by refining and lending Bone Blades 206.
Qi Gu gives him a bracelet, and they commit to being together. Lin Hanzhi subsequently gives Qi Gu his longevity lock and entrusts him with six protective Bone Blades 209 211 212.
Min Di and the Family’s Fate
A fisherman’s Soul Stabilization mark leads Lin Hanzhi to suspect that his father visited Min Di as a child. Beneath the Sea Lord Temple, he encounters further traces of the Lin family, including an exclusive bloodline-based transportation formation 220 239.
The Records of Corpse Liberation eventually supplies the missing connection. He learns that his family’s fate was tied to attempts to confront increasingly powerful ghosts through corpse liberation. Lin Yan died destroying an evil ghost, while Ning Xiao remained in the form later encountered as the Corpse-Release Immortal 269 270 271.
His reunion with his mother is brief. She refines all forty-six blades anew as a final gift, then passes away; Qi Gu remains with him through the loss 271.
Final Battle
Lin Hanzhi uses the empowered blades to wound and distract the Asura Dharma Form while Qi Gu manipulates its Threads of Karma. He repeatedly returns to the fight despite accumulating injuries and a broken arm 273.
When Asura targets Qi Gu, Lin Hanzhi rescues him on a Bone Blade and transfers his remaining Spiritual Power to him. Lin Hanzhi collapses from exhaustion as Qi Gu activates the golden Threads of Karma 273.

- Lin Hanzhi grows up caring for Qi Gu so closely that relatives tease him about having brought home a little lord to serve 274.
- Unlike the main storyline’s bereavement, the extra depicts the family together and preparing for a picnic 274.
