As the chief deity of the Izumo pantheon, Ōkuninushi's status had once been equal to that of Amaterasu Omikami. Both were Kings of Gods. However... he was merely the chief deity of that little place called Izumo.
In mythology, Amaterasu Omikami had gone to tremendous lengths to rule all of Ashihara no Nakatsukuni—the Human World. Two of her sons had been bought off by Ōkuninushi. In the end, she had to send Takemikazuchi and Ame no Tori Fune no Kami to draw the Totsuka-no-Tsurugi before Ōkuninushi yielded Izumo and made it a subordinate land of Amaterasu Omikami. Only then had Amaterasu unified the entire Heavenly Realm—Takama-ga-hara—and Ashihara no Nakatsukuni, the Human World of the Far Eastern Land.
Yet although Izumo was now governed by Takama-ga-hara, Ōkuninushi still held the greatest power there in practice. He was the local strongman.
