Background / History

Rise of the Clear Sky Sect

Tang Chen was a once-in-a-century Clear Sky Sect prodigy whose peers could not contend with him. Throughout his cultivation, he challenged increasingly powerful opponents. After becoming a Titled Douluo, he defeated several veteran titleholders and established his reputation as Clear Sky Douluo 10.

Through his strength and leadership, the Clear Sky Sect rose to become the foremost of the Upper Three Sects. Its Clear Sky Hammer became celebrated as the World’s Number One Weapon Martial Soul. Tang Chen was remembered as the strongest figure in the sect’s history 7 10.

Sea God Island and the Promise to Bo Saixi

Tang Chen and Qian Daoliu were longtime rivals who also understood one another. They traveled together to Sea God Island and challenged Bo Saixi. Despite their strength, they could not overcome her on her home ground, where she drew upon the island and ocean 10 43 44.

Both men confessed their love to her. Bo Saixi favored Tang Chen, but said she would accept whichever man first reached Level 100 and became a god. She hoped Tang Chen would stay; he instead interpreted her words literally and vowed never to return before attaining godhood 11.

Before leaving to seek an inheritance, Tang Chen challenged Qian Daoliu to secure the Clear Sky Sect’s safety. Using the Great Sumeru Hammer, he won narrowly. Qian Daoliu consequently swore that no one belonging to Spirit Hall would enter the Clear Sky Sect while he lived 11 12.

Failed Inheritance and Possession

Tang Chen eventually entered Slaughter City and gained the Asura God’s recognition. He passed the first eight trials, forged a divine body, and stood one trial away from inheriting the position of one of the Divine Realm’s Five Great God Kings 12 13.

When he grasped the Asura Demon Sword to begin the Ninth Trial, a hidden remnant of Rakshasa Divine Power invaded his Sea of Consciousness. The resulting conflict between divine powers prevented him from resisting the Nine-Headed Bat King, which parasitized his body. He failed the trial and remained in Slaughter City as the King of Slaughter, with his consciousness suppressed for decades 13.

His disappearance left the Clear Sky Sect without its greatest protector. The sect declined and eventually sealed its mountain gates under pressure from Spirit Hall, while Bo Saixi continued waiting for him 10 11.

Heavenly Ranking and Awakening

The Heavenly Dao named Tang Chen ninth on the Powerhouse Ranking, revealing that he was still alive. Its influence briefly restored his clarity, and its review exposed the King of Slaughter’s true identity and the cause of his disappearance 9 10 13.

His ranking reflected his compromised condition rather than his historical peak: the stated criteria included cultivation, martial soul quality, combat ability, and physical condition 14.

The Heavenly Dao’s rewards gave him the strength to destroy the Nine-Headed Bat King within his Sea of Consciousness. Its golden light also purged the remaining Rakshasa corruption. Tang Chen regained his original appearance and control of his body in Slaughter City 15 16.

Tang Xiao ordered the Clear Sky Sect to recall its disciples, prepare to reopen its gates, and send people to welcome him. His recovery renewed the sect’s confidence, but no completed return to the sect or reunion with Bo Saixi is shown in the supplied account 16 44.

Appearance

  • Original appearance: Tall and burly, with long hair hanging loose behind his shoulders and the imposing bearing of a veteran powerhouse 9.
  • As the King of Slaughter: Scarlet eyes, pale skin covered in strange markings, long sharp nails, enormous blood-red bat wings, and a scarlet cloak 9 10 13.
  • After restoration: His eyes lost their scarlet coloration, the markings disappeared, and his bat wings broke apart into energy absorbed by his divine body. His stooped posture straightened and his hair regained its original color 15 16.

Personality

Tang Chen is direct in both action and speech. Once certain of his feelings for Bo Saixi, he confessed without hesitation. That same straightforwardness made him miss her unspoken wish that he remain with her: he focused instead on fulfilling the stated requirement of godhood 11.

He is protective of the Clear Sky Sect and plans for its security even when pursuing personal ambitions. Before beginning his search for godhood, he risked a decisive battle with Qian Daoliu to obtain a lasting guarantee against Spirit Hall’s intrusion 11 12.

His determination survived decades of possession. After briefly regaining clarity, he resolved to reclaim his body, attempt the Asura path again, and see Bo Saixi 10 11 14.

Abilities & Skills

Clear Sky Hammer

Tang Chen’s principal weapon is his Clear Sky Hammer martial soul 9.

  • Can enlarge to tremendous size; his attack against Bo Saixi produced a thousand-foot hammer 10.
  • Delivers blows powerful enough to shatter sea barriers, shake Sea God Island, and distort space 10.
  • After evolution, its origin was no weaker than an ordinary god-level martial soul, according to Gu Yuena 17.
  • The evolved hammer can clash directly with divine weapons and is fully integrated with his divine body 16 17.

Disorder Splitting Wind Hammer

A Clear Sky Sect technique that increases its force through continuous hammer swings 10.

  • Each successive strike stacks power upon the preceding strikes.
  • At its highest cultivation, permits eighty-one consecutive hammer blows.
  • Tang Chen used it against Bo Saixi, forcing her to draw upon Sea God Island’s ocean power 10.

Great Sumeru Hammer

Channels the power of all nine Soul Rings into the Clear Sky Hammer 12.

  • Used in his narrow victory over Qian Daoliu 12.
  • Also used against Bo Saixi, but could not overcome her sea-supported defenses on Sea God Island 43.

Divine Body and Asura Divine Power

Passing the Eighth Trial gave Tang Chen a divine body and a portion of god-level power before attaining godhood 13.

  • His flesh was destroyed and reconstructed through divine lightning and Asura Divine Power 12.
  • His divine body could withstand the Asura Demon Sword’s power 13.
  • It did not prevent a direct attack on his consciousness during the Ninth Trial 13.
  • Years of parasitism nearly exhausted its vitality; the Heavenly Dao rewards repaired its flaws and restored his life origin 17.

Equipment / Items

  • Million-Year Soul Ring — A deep crimson ring edged with golden divine runes. Its energy replenished Tang Chen’s life origin; during his awakening, its radiance sealed his mental space against the Nine-Headed Bat King’s escape 15 17.
  • 100,000-Year Primordial Titan Right Arm Bone — Also called the Ancestor Tai Tan Right Arm Bone. Greatly increases right-arm strength and physical resilience, complements the Clear Sky Hammer, and strengthens his divine body 15 17.
  • Asura Demon Sword — The inheritance weapon he attempted to draw to begin the Ninth Trial. It fell back onto the altar when he failed; the account does not show him retaining it 13.

Relationships

  • Bo Saixi — Mutual love interest. Her indirect proposal prompted his search for godhood, and she waited decades for his return. After regaining clarity, he resolved to see her again 11 13 44.
  • Qian Daoliu — Longtime rival, traveling companion, and fellow suitor of Bo Saixi. Tang Chen defeated him narrowly and secured his oath protecting the Clear Sky Sect 10 11 12.
  • Tang Xiao — Descendant and current Clear Sky Sect master. Believed Tang Chen remained alive and organized preparations to welcome him after his recovery 7 16.
  • Tang Hao — Grandson. Had previously encountered the King of Slaughter without recognizing him; after learning the truth, vowed to find Tang Chen in Slaughter City 12 14.
  • Nine-Headed Bat King — Parasite that controlled his body for decades. Tang Chen destroyed it with his evolved Clear Sky Hammer 13 15.
  • Asura God — Source of his divine inheritance and trials. Tang Chen passed eight trials but did not inherit the divine position 12 13.
  • Rakshasa God — Left the interference that sabotaged his final trial. Tang Chen identified the god’s power as one of the causes of his captivity 10 13.
