Background / History
Class Five and Special Training
Tang Wulin comes from an ordinary countryside family. At Eastsea Academy, his exceptional physical strength contrasts with the limitations attributed to his Blue Silver Grass Martial Soul 22 41 59.
During Gu Yue and Hu Fangyuan’s admission assessment, he teams up with Xie Xie against them. Hu Fangyuan’s water techniques repeatedly repel him and restrict his breathing, but he continues advancing despite pain and injury. Wu Changkong stops the match, declares Tang Wulin and Xie Xie the losers, and orders Tang Wulin to add ten jin to his training vest 10 11.
Wu Changkong later warns that Tang Wulin must prove he deserves a place in the Class Promotion Tournament now that stronger students have joined. Tang Wulin accepts the challenge rather than contesting the selection. After examining his strength and Thousand Refinement Heavy Silver Hammers, Wu confirms that all four students will compete 22 27.
To work around friction within the group, Wu pairs Tang Wulin with Xie Xie and places Hu Fangyuan with Gu Yue. Tang Wulin fights on the front line while Xie Xie uses his speed for flanking and surprise attacks; repeated matches develop their coordination 36.
Guang Long Incident
Tang Wulin confronts Guang Long after witnessing him bully Uncle Li. Although his punches initially surprise the adult Soul Master, Guang Long gains the advantage in their exchanges. Hu Fangyuan intervenes and ultimately defeats him 41 43.
Tang Wulin thanks Hu Fangyuan and helps Xie Xie escort Uncle Li back to his general store. When Guang Long’s brother, Guang Biao, later brings armed men to the academy, Tang Wulin brings Wu Changkong to the confrontation and calls out a warning as Guang Biao attacks 43 48 49.
Class Promotion Tournament
Tang Wulin sits out the opening match under Wu Changkong’s plan to let Hu Fangyuan fight alone and conceal the other students’ abilities. Later, while Hu Fangyuan is on leave, Tang Wulin, Gu Yue, and Xie Xie defeat Class Two in under two minutes 37 54.
After the typhoon, Tang Wulin fails to return to class or answer his soul communicator. Xie Xie becomes anxious, while Wu Changkong views the absence as irresponsible and prepares to compete without him. Tang Wulin arrives just before the team is finalized, visibly exhausted but insisting he can fight; the cause of his absence remains unexplained in these chapters 59 61.
Against Class One, Tang Wulin intercepts Wang Jinxi’s attack on Gu Yue and uses his Golden Dragon King strength to contest the Bone Dragon King Martial Soul. However, Wang Jinxi eventually breaks away to assist Zhang Yangzi, leaving Tang Wulin embarrassed that he failed to keep his opponent occupied. Hu Fangyuan subsequently secures Class Five’s victory 63 65 66.
Following the tournament, Class Five is redesignated First-Year Class One and removed from further tournament competition. Tang Wulin is also selected for Wu Changkong’s newly established Class Zero 72.
Appearance
- Build: Small, thin, and seemingly unimposing despite his extraordinary stamina and strength 21 63.
- Face and expression: Described by Kong Hanwen as particularly pretty; his eyes are bright and expressive during training 21 60.
- Bloodline manifestation: Faint golden scales emerge on his right arm when he uses Golden Dragon Claw 63.
- Return before the Class One match: Arrives with tangled hair, a pale face, peeling lips, and an unsteady gait suggesting severe exhaustion 61.
Personality
Tang Wulin is hardworking and stubbornly unwilling to concede defeat. He responds to losing the admission assessment by promising to become stronger, and accepts criticism of his tournament qualifications without self-pity. His answer to weaker perceived talent is to train longer and endure more hardship 11 22.
He is friendly and forgiving. Despite being thoroughly defeated by Hu Fangyuan, he tries to comfort him over Eastsea Academy’s poor resources and later attempts to build a friendship. Repeated indifference eventually makes him approach Hu Fangyuan less often 15 36.
His sense of fairness makes him openly oppose the strong bullying the weak. He also frequently restrains Xie Xie from acting impulsively, including during arguments over team selection and provocations before tournament matches 22 37 41 61.
Tang Wulin places considerable importance on money and cultivation resources. He welcomes strong teammates because they improve the class’s prospects of earning tournament rewards. His appetite is equally conspicuous: after physical training, he finishes a mountainous plate of food and immediately goes back for more, taking Xie Xie’s teasing without offense 21 40 59.
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass
Tang Wulin’s Martial Soul provides restraint and battlefield control 11 27.
- Blue Silver Entanglement: Sends numerous blades of grass from his palms and the ground toward a target 11.
- Close-range setup: Restrains opponents before charging in with a punch, as demonstrated against Class Two 54.
- Limitation: Hu Fangyuan’s water curtain slows and neutralizes his grass during the admission assessment 11.
Physical Strength and Endurance
His physical capabilities far exceed what his appearance and Soul Power rank suggest 10 21.
- Punches the Heaven Refining Furnace back toward Hu Fangyuan 10.
- Remains standing after taking a powerful water column head-on, although his arms tremble and his mouth bleeds 11.
- Completes more than a dozen laps in a ten-jin iron vest without becoming flushed or breathless 21.
- Wields forging hammers weighing approximately 150 kilograms each 27.
- Limitations: Toughness does not prevent breathing disruption or accumulated injury. Hu Fangyuan also judges his early footwork, teamwork, and ability to exploit openings as crude 11 27.
Golden Dragon King Bloodline
The bloodline supplies power beyond his one-ring cultivation and is described as vastly superior in grade to Wang Jinxi’s Bone Dragon King Martial Soul 63.
- Golden Dragon Claw: Strengthens his right-arm attack and produces golden scales 63.
- Blocks Wang Jinxi’s enhanced Bone Dragon Transformation and follows up with a strike that cracks his bone armor 63.
- Limit: The bloodline remains sealed and has not fully erupted 63.
Forging and Hammer Combat
Tang Wulin applies a blacksmith’s method of exerting force to his hammer attacks 27.
- Uses heavy, straightforward blows whose force draws Wu Changkong’s attention during sparring 27.
- Benefits from the hammers’ Stacked Hammer effect, which delivers three bursts of force 27.
- Limitation: Hu Fangyuan considers his application of forging techniques to combat inefficient and believes he lacks systematic close-combat training 27.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Thousand Refinement Heavy Silver Hammers — Forging hammers weighing roughly 150 kilograms apiece. Their Stacked Hammer effect produces three bursts of force; Xie Xie is dragged face-first to the ground when he tries to take one 27.
- Iron vest — Used for endurance training. Wu Changkong orders an additional ten jin after the admission-assessment defeat; a later training scene specifies a vest weighing ten jin 11 21.
- Soul communicator — Xie Xie repeatedly tries to contact him through it during his unexplained absence 59.
Relationships
- Wu Changkong — Teacher and combat instructor. Challenges Tang Wulin to earn his tournament place, investigates his unusual strength, and later becomes his Class Zero teacher 22 27 72.
- Xie Xie — Close friend and regular training partner. Their friendship grows from fighting and bickering; Xie Xie defends Tang Wulin’s place among their companions and becomes deeply worried when he disappears 22 36 59.
- Gu Yue — Classmate and teammate. Initially refuses to displace him from the tournament team; Tang Wulin later intercepts Wang Jinxi to protect her during the Class One match 22 63.
- Hu Fangyuan — Teammate and training rival. Tang Wulin seeks friendship and appreciates his help against Guang Long, but Hu Fangyuan maintains his distance and does not regard him as a valuable companion 15 36 43 59.
- Uncle Li — Shopkeeper Tang Wulin defends from Guang Long’s bullying and subsequently helps escort home 41 43.
- Wang Jinxi — Tournament opponent and later Class Zero selection. Their direct contest of strength reveals the power of Tang Wulin’s Golden Dragon King bloodline 63 72.
