Background
Tang San retains memories from a previous life. When he sees Chen Shi preparing hot pot through the Light Screen, he recognizes the dish from the Bashu region and notices other similarities to his former era. He suspects that the world shown on the screen might be connected to his original world, but receives no confirmation 29.
In his current life, he is Tang Hao’s son and Yu Xiaogang’s disciple. Although related to the Clear Sky Sect through his father and uncle, his membership is not established: Tang Hao had already been expelled, and Spirit Hall uses that separation to challenge the sect’s right to protect him 13 27 28.
Appearance
- Build: Thin and small-framed, appearing approximately fourteen or fifteen to Sword Douluo 24.
- Hands: Long, slender fingers with well-defined knuckles 24.
- After Dugu Bo’s attack: Deathly pale, with a large, mangled chest wound exposing his ribs. Sword Douluo estimates the wound at roughly thirty to forty centimeters across 24.
- During the later confrontation: His face remains ashen, and a patch of petrified skin is visible on his chest 31.
Personality
Tang San is resourceful under pressure. Unable to fight or escape after his injury, he makes his knowledge of medicinal herbs and Dugu Bo valuable enough that the surrounding Titled Douluos postpone deciding his fate. He deliberately releases information in stages and uses their questions to seek further treatment 28 29 30.
His internal thoughts emphasize self-preservation and personal advancement. He resents losing access to the immortal-grade herbs, considers it reasonable to demand compensation for his knowledge, and privately criticizes the quality of Tang Xiao’s medicine. Sword Douluo interprets his repeated questions immediately after being rescued as selfishness and ingratitude, though Tang San apologizes once he recognizes the danger of alienating his rescuer 25 29.
His response to Xiao Wu is conflicted. He privately blames her questions for exposing his plans and ruining his cultivation, yet insists that learning she is a soul beast would not make him reject her or deliberately cause her death 28.
Abilities & Skills
Poison Expertise
Tang San’s knowledge of poison is the principal reason Dugu Bo initially keeps him alive 10.
- Neutralizes Dugu Yan’s poison during combat 10.
- Claims he can cure the inherited Life-Bound Poison afflicting Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan; Chen Shi supports his capability, but no completed cure is shown 4 10.
- Connects Dugu Bo’s poison attacks, recent exertion, and reliance on the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well to a possible period of weakness 30.
- Warns that immortal-grade herbs cannot be consumed indiscriminately, since an unsuitable choice can be fatal 30.
Medicinal Herb Knowledge
Tang San recognizes valuable plants that Dugu Bo has failed to identify in his own garden 8 19.
- Identifies dozens of immortal-grade herbs, including Aromatic Silk Beauty, Lovesick Heartbreak Red, Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng, Cockscomb Phoenix-Tail Sunflower, and Singular Velvet Sky Chrysanthemum 29.
- Knows how to combine the Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass and Infernal Delicate Apricot with the well’s opposing springs for body refinement 19.
- Uses this expertise as leverage when several factions seek the herbs harvested by Dugu Bo 28 29 30.
Ice and Fire Body Refinement
The intended Ice and Fire Golden Body uses two immortal-grade herbs and the well’s spring water to temper the body and strengthen the foundation for later cultivation 19.
- While he absorbs the herbs underwater, the springs dissolve Dugu Bo’s ordinary poison attack before it can reach him 20.
- The unfinished refinement leaves him vulnerable: interrupting it risks medicinal backlash and losing protection against the water 23.
- Dugu Bo’s Medusa’s Gaze penetrates the springs and petrifies part of his chest. Without the herbs’ protection, that section is dissolved by the water 23.
- Residual medicinal power later contributes to his survival, but he explicitly recognizes that the Golden Body attempt failed 25 28.
Equipment & Items
- Storage Soul Tool — Tang San offers to let Sword Douluo search it to verify that he possesses no additional immortal-grade herbs. Sword Douluo finds only scraps of clothing and cannot locate the tool 25.
- Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass and Infernal Delicate Apricot — The only two immortal-grade herbs he actually picks in the altered course of events; both are consumed for body refinement 19 25.
- Heart-Protecting Pill — Supplied by Sword Douluo during his rescue. It helps preserve his life but cannot regrow missing flesh 24.
- Additional healing pill — Provided by Tang Xiao and administered by Sword Douluo after Tang San presses for further treatment 29.
Relationships
- Tang Hao — Father. Redirects his journey toward Sunset Forest after the Light Screen reveals Tang San’s location, arriving with his own old injuries aggravated by the journey 10 30 31.
- Tang Xiao — Eldest uncle and Clear Sky Sect master. Intervenes because Tang San’s foretold godhood could aid the sect’s revival, then arranges protection for him when fighting begins 27 28 31.
- Yu Xiaogang — Teacher. Initially fears Dugu Bo’s retaliation, then loudly claims credit after learning that Tang San is supposed to become a god 4 13.
- Xiao Wu — Close companion whom he calls his little sister. Her questions reveal his circumstances to the continent; he later learns that she is a hundred-thousand-year Soft Bone Rabbit in human form 25 28.
- Dugu Bo — Captor and prospective patient. Their foretold friendship is derailed when the Light Screen exposes Tang San’s intended exploitation of the medicine garden; Dugu Bo nearly kills him 10 14 23 28.
- Dugu Yan — Hostile acquaintance whose poison he previously neutralized. She wants her grandfather to punish him and later resolves to warn Dugu Bo against further contact 10 18.
- Ning Rongrong — Shrek companion. Chen Shi describes a future in which Tang San gives her Aromatic Silk Beauty, enabling her Martial Soul’s evolution; that transfer has not occurred in the altered events 14 25.
- Chen Xin / Sword Douluo — Conditional rescuer. Saves him to obtain information about Aromatic Silk Beauty, continues supporting his injuries, and eventually hands him to Tang Xiao before pursuing Dugu Bo 24 25 30 31.
- Chen Shi — Reveals Tang San’s secrets and predicted future through the Light Screen. Tang San questions his apparent foresight but acknowledges that the exposed plan matches his own intentions 25 28.
- Azure Luan Douluo — Spirit Hall adversary who demands custody of him, questions him about Dugu Bo, and openly treats his death as an acceptable outcome 27 28 29 30.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Captivity in Sunset Forest
Dugu Bo allows Tang San to prepare medicine after he claims he can treat the poison afflicting the Dugu family. Tang Hao’s reputation also discourages Dugu Bo from killing him outright. Tang San gains permission to search the medicine garden and disappears beneath the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well after consuming two herbs 4 8 9 10 19.
The continent-wide Light Screen destroys the secrecy of this arrangement. Xiao Wu’s treatment of Dugu Yan angers Dugu Bo, while Chen Shi’s explanations expose both Tang San’s location and the value of the garden 4 10 18 19.
Exposure of His Predicted Future
Chen Shi describes Tang San as a future god whose cultivation benefits enormously from the well’s immortal-grade herbs. These disclosures prompt Spirit Hall to seek his elimination and draw the Clear Sky Sect and Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect toward Sunset Forest 13 14 19 27.
That future is not an accomplished outcome in the altered timeline. Tang San confirms that he intended to empty the garden, but he has actually taken only the two refinement herbs. Dugu Bo harvests the remaining treasures himself 25 28.
Failed Refinement and Rescue
Dugu Bo attacks with an enhanced Medusa’s Gaze while Tang San is near the end of his refinement. The attack leaves a catastrophic chest wound, and Tang San expends his remaining Soul Power crawling out of the springs before collapsing 23 24 25.
Sword Douluo stabilizes him with Soul Power and a Heart-Protecting Pill. The remaining medicinal power in Tang San’s body then helps him regain consciousness, though his condition remains precarious 24 25.
Bargaining Between the Major Powers
As Spirit Hall and Clear Sky Sect representatives confront one another, Tang San offers information about the herbs and Dugu Bo to delay his capture. Tang Xiao explains the Light Screen’s disclosures, and Azure Luan Douluo reveals Xiao Wu’s identity and predicted death 27 28.
Tang San subsequently argues that Dugu Bo is likely hiding nearby because renewed poisoning would prevent a prolonged escape. The gathered experts agree to search, with Sword Douluo carrying him as a compromise between the rival factions 29 30.
The Sunset Forest Melee
Tang Hao arrives before the search progresses far. As Spirit Hall prepares to attack, Sword Douluo withdraws to pursue Dugu Bo and transfers Tang San to Tang Xiao. Tang Xiao entrusts his nephew to the accompanying sect elder, who retreats with him while the fighting begins 30 31.
