Background / History
Life at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well
Dugu Bo discovered the treasure site by chance and made it his secluded residence. He cultivated medicinal herbs there to suppress the Life-Bound Poison afflicting himself and Dugu Yan, but did not recognize the garden’s immortal-grade herbs or understand its full value until Chen Shi exposed it through the Light Screen 10 14 19.
Despite his limited knowledge of those herbs, Dugu Bo claimed expertise in medicinal principles and had treated illnesses throughout the Heaven Dou Empire. Learning that he had overlooked such treasures for years left him embarrassed about his reputation 19.
Tang San’s Captivity
Dugu Bo captured Tang San at Shrek Academy. Although he intended to punish him, Tang San claimed he could cure the poison affecting both Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan. That promise, together with concern about Tang San’s father, Tang Hao, persuaded Dugu Bo to allow him a brief opportunity to prepare medicine in the garden 8 10 14.
When the Light Screen showed Xiao Wu beating Dugu Yan, Dugu Bo flew into a rage and returned to punish Tang San in retaliation. He found Tang San missing and several unfamiliar herbs already picked. Unable to see through the springs’ mist, he suspected Tang San was hiding underwater and decided to wait 4 8.
Exposure of the Garden
Chen Shi’s broadcasts revealed Dugu Bo’s location, his poisoning, and the garden’s identity. Anticipating the arrival of powerful intruders, Dugu Bo packed his belongings, expanded the surrounding Poison Formation, and concealed himself above the valley. He also considered asking Chen Shi for a cure through Dugu Yan, reducing his dependence on Tang San 10 14.
After learning that the garden contained immortal-grade herbs, Dugu Bo began harvesting them into his Wishful Treasure Pouch. Chen Shi’s explanation of Tang San’s body refinement identified the two missing plants as the Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass and Infernal Delicate Apricot, confirming that Tang San was inside the springs 19.
Attack on Tang San and Escape
Dugu Bo’s first attempt to strike Tang San with a poisoned arrow failed because the spring water dissolved it almost immediately. He postponed further attacks until he had collected the remaining immortal-grade herbs, unwilling to risk contaminating them with his poison 20 22.
He then combined his Martial Soul Avatar with Medusa’s Gaze. Although the springs weakened the petrifying beams, they reached Tang San and petrified part of his chest. The spring water dissolved the affected tissue, leaving a life-threatening wound and interrupting Tang San’s Ice and Fire Golden Body refinement 23 28.
Before attacking again, Dugu Bo sensed a powerful intruder breaching his formation. Suspecting Tang Hao, he fled with the herbs, believing Tang San would either die or remain severely crippled. The intruder was actually Sword Douluo, who chose to save Tang San rather than pursue him 23 24.
Tang San subsequently disclosed details of Dugu Bo’s poison to the gathered Titled Douluos. He argued that the exertion of battle could trigger an early attack and that Dugu Bo was probably hiding nearby in Sunset Forest. The group began searching, but his exact location remained unconfirmed 30.
Foretold Future
Chen Shi describes a future that differs from the events unfolding after the broadcasts:
- Tang San cures Dugu Bo’s poison, and the two become friends despite their age difference 11.
- Dugu Bo fights alongside the Heaven Dou Empire against Spirit Hall’s attempt to unite the continent and dies in the war roughly ten years later 11.
- Chen Shi calls him the continent’s “most miserable Titled Douluo,” prompting Dugu Bo to seek a way to change his fate 14 15.
Personality
Dugu Bo is fiercely protective of Dugu Yan, his only remaining descendant. Watching her being beaten makes him threaten retaliation against Tang San, and he considers obtaining Xiao Wu’s Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Ring and Soul Bone so that his granddaughter might eventually surpass him 4 8.
His ruthlessness is tempered by caution toward stronger opponents. He fears Tang Hao’s strength, prepares escape routes when his residence is exposed, and abandons his attack on Tang San rather than risk confronting an approaching powerhouse 9 14 23.
He is also proud of his medical reputation and possessive of his garden. Once he understands the herbs’ value, he treats Tang San’s consumption of them as theft and immediately secures the remaining plants before rival factions can arrive 19 20.
Abilities & Skills
Poison Manipulation
Dugu Bo specializes in poison-attributed Soul Power. Although he ranks near the bottom of the Titled Douluos in direct strength, his ability to retaliate against large organizations makes even the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect wary of provoking him 5.
- Poisoned projectiles: Condenses Soul Power into a poisoned arrow 20.
- Poisonous mist: His Martial Soul Avatar leaves mist capable of killing an ordinary Soul Master with a single breath 24.
- Environmental limitation: The Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well counters his poison-attributed energy. His arrow penetrates less than a foot into the water before dissolving, while his Avatar’s poison cannot approach within fifty meters of the springs 20 23.
Poison Formation
Dugu Bo maintains a poisonous defensive perimeter around his residence 14.
- Lethal barrier: Sword Douluo judges that an ordinary seven-ring Soul Sage would die merely from touching it 24.
- Intrusion warning: Dugu Bo can sense a powerful intruder breaking through it 23.
- Adjustable coverage: He expands the formation and increases its poisonous mist to gain earlier warning and more time to escape 14.
- Limit: Sword Douluo breaks through it with a single sweeping motion 24.
Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor
His seventh Soul Skill manifests his Martial Soul Avatar as an enormous jade-green serpent measuring well over thirty meters 23.
- Releases deadly poison across the surrounding area 23.
- Allows Dugu Bo to merge with the serpent’s head and enhance his Soul Bone Skill 23.
- Can be used while fleeing 23.
Medusa’s Gaze
A petrification ability granted by his ten-thousand-year Medusa Head Soul Bone 23.
- Petrifies both physical targets and energy 23.
- When enhanced by his Martial Soul Avatar, produces two beams initially exceeding one meter in diameter 23.
- Penetrates the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well farther than his poison attacks, but is still rapidly weakened by its abundant ice and fire energy 23.
Medicinal Knowledge
Dugu Bo grows herbs to suppress his and Dugu Yan’s poison and has treated patients throughout the Heaven Dou Empire. His expertise does not initially extend to identifying the immortal-grade plants in his own garden 10 19.
Weaknesses
Life-Bound Poison
Dugu Bo has carried the poison of his Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor since birth. He suppresses it through cultivation, medicinal herbs, and the environment of the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well; no completed cure is shown in the supplied events 9 10 30.
According to Tang San’s account:
- Overcast or rainy weather causes worsening numbness and itching along both flanks 30.
- Attacks occur at noon and midnight, each lasting more than two hours 30.
- Severe episodes cause intense meridian pain, obstruct Soul Power circulation, and can prevent him from releasing his Martial Soul 30.
- He remains weakened afterward; heavy expenditure from his Avatar and Head Soul Bone may bring an attack forward 30.
- Possessing immortal-grade herbs does not guarantee relief, because consuming the wrong herb can be fatal 30.
Equipment / Items
- Wishful Treasure Pouch — Stores the harvested immortal-grade herbs without damaging them 19.
- Medusa Head Soul Bone — A jade-green Soul Bone from a ten-thousand-year Medusa; grants Medusa’s Gaze 23 30.
- Immortal-grade herbs — Collects all remaining plants from the garden before fleeing. Tang San identifies its treasures as including Aromatic Silk Beauty, Lovesick Heartbreak Red, Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng, Cockscomb Phoenix-Tail Sunflower, and Singular Velvet Sky Chrysanthemum 22 29.
Relationships
- Dugu Yan — His granddaughter and only remaining descendant. Her safety and inherited serpent venom are central to his decisions 4 9 10.
- Tang San — Captive and prospective poison healer who becomes his target after the broadcasts expose the garden’s secrets. Their foretold friendship does not develop during these events 10 11 19 23.
- Tang Hao — A feared threat whose strength influences Dugu Bo’s treatment of Tang San and his decision to flee 9 10 23.
- Xiao Wu — Her assault on Dugu Yan provokes his retaliation. After learning her soul-beast identity, he considers hunting her for his granddaughter’s benefit 4 8.
- Chen Shi — Reveals Dugu Bo’s secrets and foretold death through the Light Screen. Dugu Bo nevertheless views him as a possible alternative source of a cure 11 14 20.
- Sword Douluo / Chen Xin — Breaches his formation and inadvertently interrupts his attack on Tang San. Later joins the search for him to obtain Aromatic Silk Beauty 23 24 30.
