Background / History

Tang Sect Background

Tang San is a transmigrator who has lived two lives and retains the Tang Sect’s secret techniques and hidden-weapon craftsmanship. In Douluo, he studies under Yu Xiaogang and attends Shrek Academy. His father, Tang Hao, supplies him with information about Slaughter City and its entrance requirements 3 13 16.

Star Dou Great Forest Expedition

After a tremendous disturbance in Star Dou Great Forest, Tang San accepts Yu Xiaogang’s claim that ancient ruins have appeared. He hopes to obtain rare metals for the Tang Sect’s finest mechanical hidden weapons, while the academy also intends to seek new Soul Rings 3.

Inside the forest, he uses Purple Demon Eye to notice Soul Power converging toward the center. Although he initially admires Yu Xiaogang’s explanation of an ancient formation, a blast powerful enough to knock down the Shrek group briefly shakes his confidence. He realizes that without Spirit Hall standing ahead of them, they might have been vaporized 4 6.

Tang San nevertheless resumes trusting the expedition. At Yu Xiaogang’s request, he recruits Dragon Duke Meng Shu and Snake Granny Chao Tianxiang with the prospect of sharing Soul Bones from a supposedly dying, unknown Soul Beast. He repeatedly dismisses Xiao Wu’s fear, believing the assembled seniors and his own Tang Sect techniques can keep her safe 8.

Xiao Wu’s Departure

Yu Xiaogang assigns Tang San to slip toward the supposed formation core while the Golden Iron Triangle distracts the beasts. The plan collapses when their Golden Sacred Dragon is destroyed immediately, exposing the students 9.

When the Titan Giant Ape reaches for Xiao Wu, Tang San shields her and attacks with his hidden weapons and Eight Spider Lances. None penetrate its skin. A casual blow sends him into a tree, leaving him severely injured. He interprets Xiao Wu’s removal as a fatal capture and blames Yu Xiaogang’s arrogance for endangering her 9.

Tang San later enters the forest alone to retrieve her. His poisoned Silent Sleeve Arrow shatters against the ape’s eyelid, and he prepares further attacks. Unknown to him, Da Ming and Er Ming are protecting Xiao Wu and desperately trying to avoid disturbing the being underground 10 11.

Xiao Wu tells him that the two beasts are her friends and refuses to leave. To force him away from danger, she calls him a burden and his weapons useless iron. Tang San leaves devastated, unaware that her rejection is intended to save his life. Back at camp, he resolves to obtain enough power to take her back, even through sinister techniques 11 12.

By the time Yu Xiaogang discusses the incident afterward, Tang San has severed their teacher–disciple relationship. Xiao Wu subsequently tells Tang Hao that she will never return to the human world and asks him to tell Tang San to consider the former Xiao Wu dead 14 16.

Slaughter City

Seeking the Divine Slaughter’s Domain, Tang San travels to Slaughter City using his father’s instructions. He mistakes the discontinued Bloody Mary service and the city’s emergency lockdown for entrance tests. Ignoring warnings, he forces his way past Scott’s knights with Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track and the Clear Sky Hammer 13.

At the Blood Pool, Tang San finds an enormous dark-gold structure. Drawing on Yu Xiaogang’s teachings, he identifies it as a formation’s energy hub and attempts to seize control of Slaughter City by destroying it. His strongest hammer blow leaves it unmarked; the recoil cracks his Clear Sky Hammer, shatters the bones in both arms, and throws him into a rock wall 14.

The King of Slaughter explains that the structure is a living dragon whisker. Tang San initially refuses to believe him, insisting that the explanation conceals an unwillingness to grant him a trial. After being thrown against a wall again, he loses consciousness 16.

Upon awakening, Tang San examines the surface closely with Purple Demon Eye. Its pores and slow, rhythmic movement finally convince him that it belongs to a living creature. The realization destroys his confidence in both his hidden weapons and the domain he had sought. The King of Slaughter orders him imprisoned, chained, and silenced 19.

Escape and the Continental Disaster

From the water prison, Tang San witnesses the whisker retract slightly, burning through more than ten thousand meters of rock. The prison cracks as underground water and rubble flood inside 20.

He survives and is later washed onto a riverbank near the Heaven Dou Empire’s border. Both arms remain unusable, and the scalding water leaves his skin blistered. The automatically circulating Mysterious Heaven Skill protects his heart meridians and keeps him alive 23.

Flender, Zhao Wuji, and Yu Xiaogang find him while escorting refugees and searching for news of him and Tang Hao. They take him to Shrek Academy’s mountain refugee camp for treatment 23.

There, Tang San rejects Yu Xiaogang’s theory that a powerful Soul Beast is manipulating magma through the leylines. Drawing on what he personally witnessed, he identifies the rising temperatures as the underground creature’s body heat and warns that its growth is breaking the planet apart 24.

Personality

Tang San begins with profound respect for Yu Xiaogang, readily treating his explanations as authoritative. Repeated disasters turn that admiration into resentment and disgust. Even after rejecting his teacher, however, he still interprets the Blood Pool’s dragon whisker through the same mistaken formation theories 3 4 9 12 14.

His attachment to Xiao Wu drives him to protect her physically, enter dangerous territory alone, and risk his life against opponents far beyond his strength. That devotion is accompanied by dismissiveness: he treats her warnings as timidity and initially refuses to accept that she is staying with Da Ming and Er Ming voluntarily 8 9 10 11.

He is fiercely proud of Tang Sect techniques and confident that human ingenuity can overcome powerful beasts. This confidence repeatedly becomes overconfidence, particularly when he disregards Slaughter City’s warnings as staged tests. Direct observation of the living whisker finally breaks his certainty, leaving him fearful and increasingly aware of the limits of his knowledge 11 13 16 19 24.

Abilities & Skills

Purple Demon Eye

An observational technique used to examine Soul Power, see at night, and scrutinize distant or unusual objects 4 10 19.

  • Detects the forest’s Soul Power slowly gathering toward its center 4.
  • Supports nighttime scouting during his solo search for Xiao Wu 10.
  • Reveals pores and rhythmic movement on the dragon whisker, providing the evidence that finally overturns his formation theory 19.

Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track

A movement technique used for rapid repositioning, stealth, and evasion 9 10 13.

  • Lets him move between Xiao Wu and the Titan Giant Ape 9.
  • Helps him avoid low-level Soul Beasts while entering the forest’s inner ring 10.
  • Carries him past Scott’s defensive line before the inner-city passage is sealed 13.

Hidden-Weapon Craftsmanship and Poison Use

Tang San manufactures mechanical hidden weapons and combines specially forged projectiles with venom 3 11.

  • Seeks high-quality metals to produce stronger Tang Sect weapons 3.
  • Coats a Silent Sleeve Arrow with mixed Mandala Snake and Man Faced Demon Spider venom; the weapon is described as capable of paralyzing a ten-thousand-year Soul Beast if it strikes a weak point 11.
  • His massed hidden-weapon attack cannot mark the Titan Giant Ape’s skin, and his specially prepared arrow shatters against its eyelid 9 11.

Clear Sky Hammer

A jet-black hammer Martial Soul that Tang San uses to identify himself with the Clear Sky Sect and fight through Slaughter City’s guards 13.

  • Sends two black-armored knights flying during his forced entry 13.
  • Enlarges to the size of a water vat when filled with his Soul Power 14.
  • Uses the Disorder Splitting Wind Hammer technique, also rendered as Chaotic Cloak, for his attack on the dragon whisker 14.
  • Cracks from the recoil of that attack and returns to his body, temporarily becoming impossible to summon 14.

Eight Spider Lances

Eight poisonous appendages that extend from Tang San’s back 9.

  • Used to thrust at the Titan Giant Ape’s wrist while his hidden weapons attack its palm.
  • Cannot pierce the ape’s skin despite their poison 9.

Mysterious Heaven Skill

An internal cultivation technique that circulates within Tang San’s body 13 23.

  • Fails to fully resist the intense heat near Slaughter City’s Blood Pool 13.
  • Later circulates automatically to protect his heart meridians while he is carried through scalding underground water 23.
