Inside a secluded building that served as one of Hydra's bases, a refined-looking man wearing gold-rimmed glasses held a book in his hands and read silently, looking just like a scholar.
But only those familiar with him knew how terrifying this refined-looking man was. He was Whitehall, one of Hydra's leaders, a devil who had survived the war, his hands stained with blood.
Tap, tap, tap!
Footsteps slowly approached. Whitehall put down his book and looked toward the door, a faint smile involuntarily curling his lips. Only one person would come here at this hour.
He knew John Garrett had returned. Sure enough, a cold-looking figure stepped through the door. It was John Garrett.
"Welcome back, John Garrett. You brought me the gift I wanted, didn't you?"
Whitehall wore a faint smile. He believed Garrett must have brought the parchment scroll back for him. After all, Garrett was an excellent agent who had also undergone enhancement, making him far beyond any ordinary person.
Unfortunately, his question received no answer. Garrett stared blankly at Whitehall, slowly raising the pistol in his hand.
"No!!"
At the sight, Whitehall's expression changed drastically. He had no idea why Garrett was acting so strangely, but he sensed an overwhelming danger and instinctively dove behind the sofa.
Bang!
Sure enough, the moment Whitehall dodged, a bullet left the barrel, grazed past the spot where he had just stood, and buried itself in the wall.
"Damn you, John Garrett! Do you know what you're doing? You actually dared to shoot at me! You're asking to die! I'll skin you alive! Put that gun down right now! Don't anger me! You can't bear the consequences!"
Whitehall roared furiously, veins bulging across his face, making him look utterly vicious!
He simply could not understand where John Garrett had found the courage to shoot at him. This was far too abnormal. Besides, John Garrett had planned to have Hydra continue enhancing him after this mission. He had absolutely no reason to attack him!
"What happened, sir?"
John Garrett's gunshot drew the Hydra soldiers outside, and a dozen or so soldiers immediately burst in.
"Seize John Garrett! He attacked me! He's betrayed Hydra!"
Seeing the Hydra soldiers arrive, Whitehall immediately ordered them to capture John Garrett.
"Yes, sir!"
Hydra's brainwashing had been highly successful. Even against an enhanced supersoldier like John Garrett, its soldiers did not hesitate in the slightest and immediately charged him.
It was a battle of strength against numbers. The Clairvoyant had been an excellent agent in his youth, and the biological enhancements of the Deathlok Project had greatly increased John Garrett's individual combat strength, making him far stronger than any single Hydra soldier. But the Hydra soldiers could overwhelm him with numbers. Every time one soldier fell, another Hydra soldier charged forward, fighting John Garrett without regard for his own life.
Deafening gunfire echoed through this unknown base. Only after a long time did John Garrett slowly fall. By then, blood had washed through the base. Hydra soldiers' corpses filled the entire place, and spent casings covered the floor. It was a horrific sight.
"A lunatic! That damned bastard! John Garrett was a lunatic!"
Whitehall walked into the room, angrily cursing John Garrett. When the Hydra soldiers had entered earlier, he had left the room under their cover, but he had witnessed this inexplicable battle from outside!
Yes, inexplicable. Even now, he did not understand why John Garrett had suddenly gone on a killing spree, even fighting without fear of death until the very last moment.
A trace of dread flashed through Whitehall's eyes. John Garrett had been far too terrifying just now. A soldier had thrust a long blade into John Garrett's chest, yet John Garrett had kept fighting. Even at the end, when both his feet had been blown off and he had fallen to the ground, he had continued crawling slowly, as though intent on driving the dagger in his hand into an enemy's heart!
He had been like a suicide fighter who feared neither life nor death. But Whitehall knew Garrett was no such fighter. He was a sly little fox. This was nothing he would ever do. It was as though someone had been controlling him!
"What exactly happened over the past few days? Did John Garrett provoke those mutants?"
Whitehall's brows knitted tightly, his head aching as he pondered the matter. He even began to suspect mutants. As one of Hydra's leaders, he knew about mutants, a group of people with bizarre abilities.
But if mutants really were involved, this matter would become even more troublesome. After all, anything involving mutants became extremely troublesome.
Whitehall's brows were almost tied in knots. He truly could not understand what had happened here. Unfortunately, John Garrett had been like a madman, knowing nothing but frenzied combat, so he had had no way to learn the truth from John Garrett and could only speculate on his own.
Xia Zuo did not know that a casual order of his had left the suspicious Whitehall mired in confusion. But one thing was certain: Whitehall was now deeply wary of Xia Zuo, this unknown enemy. He would not even dare retaliate again in the short term and only wanted to hush the matter up.
Besides, even if he wanted revenge, he had no idea who his enemy was.
