Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Original Sharingan and Wood Release implants 12 52 Secretly receives an Orochimaru-created arm combining Hashirama Senju’s cells with three Sharingan. A fourth Sharingan occupies his right eye socket. The acquisition occurs before its public exposure.
Loss of implanted abilities 11 12 33 Gengetsu severs his right arm and removes his right-eye Sharingan. Gengetsu later states that he also destroyed and stripped away Danzo’s transplanted Hashirama cells.
Restored Wood Release arm and Sharingan 52 69 Reconnects with Orochimaru and obtains another arm. Limited materials leave it with two Sharingan; his right-eye Sharingan is also restored.
Izanagi reserves depleted 72 His three Sharingan provide three minutes of Izanagi in total. Both arm-mounted eyes close during his battle with Gengetsu, leaving approximately one minute through the right-eye Sharingan.

Background / History

Danzo spent decades building Root into an organization with extensive infiltration throughout Konoha. He repeatedly competed with Hiruzen Sarutobi for the Hokage position, usually losing their political confrontations and remaining underground as the village’s “Darkness” 20 68.

His covert activities included bloodline experiments and cooperation with Orochimaru. Hiruzen knew of the experiments and tolerated them, but did not know that Danzo had implanted Sharingan and Wood Release into his own body 12 14 52.

Danzo was also implicated in the politically engineered public pressure that drove Hatake Sakumo to his death. Kakashi later learned that Hiruzen had tacitly approved Danzo’s actions 64.

Appearance

Danzo initially appears as an elderly man leaning on a wooden cane, with his right eye and the right half of his body concealed beneath thick bandages 1.

  • Chin scar: A conspicuous cross-shaped blade scar 1.
  • Original transplanted arm: Grayish-white, twisted like a withered tree trunk, with three scarlet Sharingan embedded in it 12.
  • Replacement arm: Pale and fitted with two Sharingan; a three-tomoe Sharingan also occupies his right eye socket 69.
  • After Gengetsu’s fire attack: Extensive black-and-red burns, charred clothing, a barely recognizable face, and exposed bark-like fibers along the left side of his body 76.

Personality

Danzo combines an entrenched hatred of the Uchiha with a possessive ambition to become Hokage. During the original Nine-Tails attack, his immediate priority is investigating and containing the clan rather than protecting villagers. He treats the Hokage position as something that rightfully belongs to him and openly declares that no Uchiha should ever hold it 2 6 10.

He habitually justifies his methods as service to Konoha, including the theft of bloodline abilities. His later actions put his struggle for power above village security: he offers Kumogakure an invasion route and eventually releases the Nine-Tails himself 12 14 43 69.

His alliances are transactional. Although he presents the elders’ escape as a way to “save Konoha,” he actually intends to absorb their clans’ ninja and supplies into Root. When those resources are lost, he berates Hiruzen despite having survived his own encounter with Gengetsu only through his implanted cells 68 76.

Abilities & Skills

Transplanted Sharingan

Danzo uses stolen Uchiha eyes implanted in his right eye socket and artificial arm 12 69.

  • Commands the released Nine-Tails to attack Gengetsu 70.
  • Uses the implanted eyes to support Izanagi 72.
  • Relies on replacement transplants after Gengetsu removes his original eyes and arm 12 69.

Izanagi

An Uchiha forbidden technique that turns injuries, death, and other unfavorable circumstances affecting its user into a dream 72.

  • Allows Danzo to return unharmed after decapitation, bisection, and other fatal attacks 72.
  • His three available Sharingan provide a total of three minutes of protection 72.
  • Does not prevent Gengetsu from predicting his revival locations with Heavenly Standing Long and killing him again immediately 72.
  • Becomes unusable through an eye once that eye’s power is exhausted and it closes 72.

Wood Release and Implanted Vitality

Orochimaru’s artificial arms give Danzo Wood Release through Hashirama’s cells 52 69.

  • His restored arm has enough power to suppress the Nine-Tails’ chakra during his seal-breaking operation 69.
  • Attempts to use Wood Release against Gengetsu, but is cut down before completing the hand seals 72.
  • The vitality of his implanted Wood Release cells allows him to survive Gengetsu’s fire attack, though he remains gravely wounded 76.

Wind Release

Danzo uses Wind Release: Vacuum Wave, expelling several invisible wind blades from his mouth 72.

  • The blades shred branches and leaves along their path 72.
  • Gengetsu evades the attack with a slight movement 72.

Seal Disruption

Danzo forcibly opens Naruto Uzumaki’s Eight Trigrams Seal using his restored right arm 69.

  • Forms hand seals, gathers chakra flames on all five fingers, and presses his hand against Naruto’s navel 69.
  • Releases the Nine-Tails to divert Konoha’s defenders and create an escape opportunity for the imprisoned clans 69.

Intelligence and Covert Operations

Danzo’s long-established Root network remains useful even after his imprisonment and defection 20 68.

  • Receives intelligence and commands assassination squads from his prison cell 20.
  • Escapes after Root operatives cut his cell’s chain and kill the prison guards 31.
  • Secretly reenters Konoha despite changes to its defensive barrier and reaches the heavily guarded prison 68.

  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Longtime political rival and intermittent ally. Hiruzen publicly orders his arrest, privately accepts his innocence in the first rampage, and eventually agrees to escape with him 13 14 68.
  • Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura — Political collaborators against Gengetsu. They distance themselves when his implants are exposed, then later accept his offer to leave Konoha 10 12 68.
  • Orochimaru — Covert collaborator who creates both his original and replacement Wood Release–Sharingan arms 52 69 82.
  • Root — Organization he built and led for decades. Its operatives continue reporting to him in prison, arrange his escape, and later sacrifice themselves to cover his retreat 20 31 73.
  • Uchiha Clan — Targets of his surveillance, prejudice, and proposed extermination. His theft of their Sharingan provokes Fugaku’s public outrage 2 12 31.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Targeted as the Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki; Danzo breaks his seal to manufacture a village-wide crisis 69.
  • Hatake Sakumo and Kakashi Hatake — Danzo’s role in the campaign against Sakumo makes him an object of Kakashi’s anger once the political manipulation is revealed 64.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Original Nine-Tails Attack

Danzo leads Root to blockade the Uchiha compound, citing the Sharingan pattern in the Nine-Tails’ eyes as grounds for suspicion. Gengetsu slaps him into a stone wall and accuses him of betraying Konoha by preventing disaster relief. Faced with over a hundred armed Uchiha, Danzo hesitates to attack and lets them pass 1 2.

Succession Dispute and Imprisonment

After Minato names Gengetsu as his successor, Danzo joins the opposition at the Hokage meeting. He accuses the Uchiha of releasing the Nine-Tails and killing Minato to seize power 6 9 10.

Gengetsu overturns the accusation by exposing Danzo’s transplanted arm and right eye. Although Gengetsu knows Danzo did not cause the original rampage, he uses the implants, Danzo’s ambition, and the compound blockade to make him a convincing scapegoat. Hiruzen orders his arrest, and Danzo loses all official positions 11 12 13 14.

Assassination Attempts and Defection

Still commanding Root from prison, Danzo orders the Third and Fourth Squads to kill Gengetsu on the road to the Daimyō’s Residence. The operation fails. When Hiruzen also fails to overthrow Gengetsu, Danzo abandons hopes of being released politically and orders Root to break him out 20 21 26 31.

Gengetsu issues the highest-level wanted notice, publicizing the false charges that Danzo released the Nine-Tails and killed Minato. Danzo is subsequently blamed for Obito’s Wood Release battle with Gengetsu as well, despite having no involvement 33 35.

During Kumogakure’s preparations for war, Danzo offers the Fourth Raikage a secret route into the Land of Fire. After Gengetsu defeats the invasion and displays Wood Release, Danzo seeks Orochimaru’s help to restore his own implants 43 52.

Second Nine-Tails Rampage

Danzo secretly returns to Konoha and persuades the imprisoned elders to flee with him. To create the diversion, he attacks Konoha Hospital, orders Root to kill two nurses, and opens Naruto’s seal. Unlike the original disaster falsely attributed to him, this Nine-Tails rampage is genuinely his doing 68 69.

He directs the beast against Gengetsu, hoping it will kill or seriously wound him. Gengetsu instead suppresses the Nine-Tails and returns it to Naruto’s seal, ruining Danzo’s plan 70 71.

Pursuit and Survival

Gengetsu pursues Danzo into the forest and repeatedly kills him as Izanagi restores him. Unable to counter Gengetsu’s predictions and running out of Sharingan power, Danzo flees. Root reinforcements fail to stop the pursuit, and Gengetsu leaves him in a blazing crater, believing him dead 72 73.

Danzo survives through the vitality of his implanted cells and reaches Hiruzen’s retreating group. After receiving medical treatment, he learns that Koharu and Homura were captured and most supplies were lost. His attempt to strengthen Root has instead left him severely injured, and he departs deeper into the forest with Hiruzen’s survivors 76.
