Background and History
Selection as the Taihua Jade Maiden
Yin Weiying is Prince Jing’s only daughter and Mount Taihua’s Jade Maiden. Every sixty years, Mount Taihua opens its altar and casts divination blocks for a High God to select a Jade Maiden. She then chooses a Golden Lad to accompany her up the mountain to cultivate toward immortality 28.
The Jade Maiden inherits the Divine Maiden of Taihua’s legacy, while the Golden Lad traditionally assists her cultivation. Their partnership does not guarantee equal longevity: previous Jade Maidens have survived while their Golden Lads died after only a few sixty-year cycles. The lineage’s ascension method uses emotion to comprehend emotionlessness, ultimately pursuing Supreme Oblivion of Emotion 33 34.
Weiying frequently cultivates in seclusion at her father’s estate. By her own account, she barely knows even a few of its maids and does not recognize Huang Liuqing, the martial artist sent to kill Chen Yi 35.
Search for a Golden Lad
After learning that her father’s faction intended to kill an official during the Prayer Daoist Grounds, Weiying intervened to protect Min Ning. Prince Jing agreed that the Min descendant would be spared 28.
At Hundred Flowers Tower, Weiying offered to take the person she believed was Min Ning—also called Min Yuechi or Min Moon Pond—up the mountain. In fact, she was speaking to Chen Yi under Min Ning’s identity. When he refused on the grounds of family obligations, she drew him into an illusion demonstrating mortal impermanence and the apparent insignificance of worldly attachments 30.
Chen Yi nearly accepted her teaching but could not abandon his attachment to Yin Tingxue. He rejected Supreme Oblivion of Emotion, questioning whether Weiying cultivated to become an immortal or a stone. She dismissed his opposing principles as Mohist heterodoxy 30 31.
Demon-Quelling Day and the Identity Reveal
During the capital’s premature Demon-Quelling Day, Weiying traveled with Chen Yi and Min Ning. She destroyed a ghost masquerading as a talisman-selling Daoist, then witnessed Chen Yi identify another ghost and release a dying Asura from its suffering 31 32 33.
Mistaking his knowledge for the Heavenly Eye, Weiying reconsidered her earlier disdain. She believed that someone born with such a divine ability might be her own opportunity for advancement, rather than merely a Golden Lad assisting her. She offered to make him her dao companion, only for him to reveal that he was Chen Yi—the man her father wanted dead 33 34.
Humiliated by the deception, Weiying attacked him with her peachwood sword, but Min Ning disarmed her. Chen Yi then had Min Ning immobilize her and loosen her robe to force her to disclose Prince Jing’s assassination plan. Weiying revealed that the attack was intended for Demon-Quelling Day and denied involvement 34.
Chen Yi subsequently stayed behind to delay Huang Liuqing while Min Ning escorted Weiying to the Western Depot. After escaping, he demanded compensation from Weiying for her father’s actions and forced her to surrender the Purple Medicine Pill Compendium 35 36.
Huai River Village
Weiying next encountered Chen Yi while accompanying Shangqing Dao priests to investigate Huai River Village’s ancestral hall. Having divined that he did not possess the Heavenly Eye, she tried to embarrass him by publicly praising his supposed expertise in exorcism. He retaliated by repeating her dao-companion proposal and recounting their earlier encounter in misleadingly romantic terms, causing the priests to mistake them for lovers 41 42.
Inside the hall, the group became trapped in Ghost General Deng Ai’s domain. Weiying’s paper servants were easily destroyed, and the injured Xuanzhen could no longer lead the defense. Realizing that the ghost feared Chen Yi rather than her, she asked for his help. He refused to act until she explicitly begged him to save them 43.
After Chen Yi killed the ghost’s manifestation, Weiying remained behind to lead a soul-summoning formation. She admitted that she hoped to earn enough goodwill for Chen Yi to spare her parents if he eventually defeated her father. The ritual was expected to require three days; after its initial stage, she estimated another two days would be needed 44 45 46.
Appearance
Weiying is described as a young beauty with bright, almond-shaped eyes, dark brows, and long black hair. Her bearing is ethereal and composed, though embarrassment readily brings a blush to her face 28 34 41.
- Daoist robes: Appears in blue robes patterned with flames, white robes, and blue-and-white robes 28 30 41.
- Crescent crown: Wears a Daoist crescent crown securing her hair 28.
- Peachwood sword: Carries it at her waist, with golden threads hanging from the hilt 28.
- Incense fragrance: After conducting the soul-summoning ritual, retains a faint, light scent of incense 46.
Personality
Weiying initially presents herself as serene, proud, and confident in the superiority of the immortal path. She compares mortals to short-lived mushrooms and cicadas, regarding their concerns as limited by their brief lives. Even when Chen Yi’s criticism angers her, she outwardly claims not to take offense 30 31.
Her composure is much less secure when her dignity is challenged. Chen Yi’s deception and repeated mockery leave her furious and flustered; her insults often take the form of quotations from Daoist scripture. Her resentment over Min Ning is explicitly described as wounded pride and humiliation rather than deep romantic affection 34 46.
She professes strict observance of Lord Lao’s Five Precepts, including prohibitions against killing and lying. These principles do not make her harmless: she distinguishes hurting someone from killing them and considers using Mount Taihua’s arts to torment Chen Yi if he accompanies her there 34 42.
Despite advocating the severance of worldly ties, she remains attached to her family. Her request that Chen Yi spare her parents is accompanied by an admission that she has not escaped mortal attachments 45.
Abilities and Skills
Mount Taihua’s Immortality Method
Weiying practices the Jade Maiden’s lineage, which seeks longevity and ascension through Supreme Oblivion of Emotion 31 34.

- Uses emotion as a route toward comprehending emotionlessness 34.
- No cultivation rank or breakthrough for Weiying is documented in these chapters.

- Demonstrates impermanence through an apparently eternal lamp extinguishing 30.
- Reveals Silver Terrace Temple as the site of Chen Yi’s deepest worldly attachment 30.
- Senses changes in his state of mind within the illusion, but fails to make him renounce his attachments 31.
Exorcism and Protective Arts
Weiying combines hand seals, incantations, Dipper footwork, and her peachwood sword to confront ghosts 32.
- Treading the Dipper: Uses the sequence called Three Steps, Nine Traces while attacking the false Daoist 32.

- Limit: Cannot overcome Deng Ai’s manifestation; among the assembled Daoists, only Xuanzhen has deeper mastery than she does 43.
Paper Servants
Weiying animates paper figurines by blowing on them and scattering them onto the ground 43.
- Produces two sword-bearing maids to face Deng Ai 43.
- The maids are destroyed with extraordinary ease by the Ghost General 43.
Divination
Weiying casts a divination concerning Chen Yi and concludes that he does not possess the Heavenly Eye, correcting her earlier assumption 41.
Soul-Summoning
Weiying states that Mount Taihua’s soul-summoning arts surpass those of Shangqing Dao and takes the central role in the grave-side formation 45.
- Leads while the other Daoists guard and support the formation 45.
- Uses incense, Dipper steps, and coordinated summons from the four directions to guide the deceased’s scattered souls 46.
- Requires several days for the ritual described at Huai River Village 46.
Square Realm Storage
Weiying stores her tea table and utensils with a sweep of her sleeve. Chen Yi identifies the method as placing them inside a Square Realm 31.
