Background / History

Martial Family and Search for a Sect

Lu Xiu comes from a martial arts lineage with ancestral ties to an immortal sect. After his encounter with thousand-year-old spirit medicine, his father encouraged him to seek admission to an immortal sect. While searching for the Heavenly Stone Sect, he became lost in a pine forest for three days, surviving on a few pine nuts before reaching the Jiaxia Kingdom 6.

There, he met Sun Chen, who recognized his unusually abundant spiritual energy and offered guidance. Lu Xiu readily accepted the invitation and joined Sun Chen and Ao Ding for a breakfast conjured through Ao Ding’s Meal-Painting Art 6.

The Golden-Peng Pheasant

Lu Xiu volunteered to fight the demon bird threatening Jiaxia out of a wandering hero’s duty to help others, but firmly refused marriage to a princess. During the first confrontation, he intercepted the Golden-Peng Pheasant’s beak to save He Wenchang. His treasured sword shattered, but he dragged He Wenchang clear of the bird’s next attack 6 7.

Before the second confrontation, Sun Chen repaired the damaged weapons and placed protective talismans on the fighters, while Ao Ding enchanted their equipment with the Chicken Feather-Shedding Curse. Lu Xiu eagerly gathered his companions for the renewed hunt, which ended with the bird’s defeat 8.

Entering the Dao

Lu Xiu declined marriage, payment, and longevity medicine. Sun Chen instead helped him begin cultivation in the hidden treasury, teaching him the Nine-Aperture Exquisite One-Qi Art. Although he initially struggled to memorize it, he successfully entered the Seed Qi Realm while Ao Ding watched over his practice 9.

He subsequently helped Ao Ding hang upside down from the Xuanjia Immortal Tree for a breakthrough method. While Ao Ding underwent fiery purification, Sun Chen taught Lu Xiu about immortal sects, Daoist lineages, and the Mystic Gang Realm, temporarily opening his vision to the tides of vital energy 10 11.

Journey to the Heavenly Stone Sect

After attending the Jiaxia weddings, Lu Xiu traveled with Ao Ding, Sun Chen, and Lin Bai toward Lingcheng. He witnessed Sun Chen’s arrangements for Lin Rulong to become a wine ghost immortal and received a warning against mistaking ghostly immortality or reincarnation for the orthodox path 12 14 15.

At Azure Pool Immortal Market, Sun Chen supervised his cultivation and planned a safer journey to the Heavenly Stone Sect. Lu Xiu continued practicing at the inn before departing in a Qingji carriage. Sun Chen provided two introduction letters: one for his elder at the Heavenly Stone Sect, and another for a friendly True Person of the Jade Cauldron Sect if his first application failed. His admission to either sect is not shown 15 17 19.

Personality

Lu Xiu is earnest and chivalrous. He considers helping people in danger a wandering swordsman’s responsibility, and his rescue of He Wenchang puts that conviction into practice. His desire to seek immortality outweighs the prospect of marrying a princess or accepting material rewards 6 7 9.

He is also trusting, shy, and inexperienced. He follows Sun Chen without suspicion, becomes embarrassed around the Jiaxia attendants, and hides underwater when the eldest princess approaches the bathing pool naked. He initially mistakes Ao Ding’s lack of attraction to her for exceptional composure 6 9.

Although slow to grasp unfamiliar cultivation principles, Lu Xiu asks questions and commits explanations to memory. He persists through more than a hundred unsuccessful summoning attempts and worries openly about Ao Ding’s pain and safety during his fiery breakthrough 9 11 13.

Abilities & Skills

Martial Arts and Swordsmanship

Lu Xiu possesses his family’s martial training and had already become an innate martial artist before beginning Daoist cultivation 6 8.

  • Lightness skill: Darts forward quickly enough to intercept the Golden-Peng Pheasant’s attack on He Wenchang 7.
  • Swordsmanship: Strikes the bird’s beak during the rescue, though his treasured sword cannot withstand the impact 7.
  • Innate true qi: His spirit-medicine encounter leaves him with abundant spiritual energy and leakless true qi; this alone does not open the spiritual aperture required for the immortal Dao 6 9.

Nine-Aperture Exquisite One-Qi Art

Sun Chen teaches Lu Xiu this preparatory cultivation method associated with the Jade Cauldron Sect’s orthodox teachings 9.

  • Forms his Great Dao qi seed in the Dantian 9.
  • Allows him to continue cultivating without impediment after joining the Heavenly Stone Sect 9.
  • Requires effort to memorize; his initial difficulty delays his entry into the bathing pool 9.

Spellcasting Limitations

Lu Xiu struggles with the Thousand-Li Marsh Spirit Spell, failing to summon a Qingji despite more than a hundred attempts 13.

  • Sun Chen advises him to concentrate on alchemy, the Heavenly Stone Sect’s specialty 13.
  • No successful alchemical work by Lu Xiu is documented; Sun Chen nevertheless considers him capable of eventually ranking among the Jade Cauldron Sect’s True Disciples 19.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Treasured sword — Shattered while saving He Wenchang; Sun Chen subsequently restores the damaged weapons before the second hunt 7 8.
  • Temporary protective talisman — Drawn on his back by Sun Chen to protect his life during the demon-bird hunt 8.
  • Cloud Immortal White Fruit — Receives a portion from Sun Chen after the Jiaxia weddings; it had originally been intended for Lin Bai’s father 12.
  • Two introduction letters — Provide an introduction at the Heavenly Stone Sect and a fallback contact at the Jade Cauldron Sect 19.

Relationships

  • Sun Chen — Cultivation mentor and protector. Teaches him his first Daoist method, supervises his practice, and arranges his sect introductions and escorted departure 6 9 15 19.
  • Ao Ding — Friend and fellow traveler. Guards his first cultivation session and explains cultivation principles; Lu Xiu assists with Ao Ding’s breakthrough preparations. Sun Chen hopes their friendship will become a lasting connection between future cultivators 9 10 12 19.
  • Father — Encourages his search for an immortal sect and warns him not to offend elderly people or children while traveling, since immortals commonly take those forms 6.
  • He Wenchang — Fellow demon-bird fighter whose life Lu Xiu saves at the cost of his sword 7.
  • Eldest Princess of Jiaxia — Seeks a connection with him because of his immortal potential. Lu Xiu rejects marriage and avoids her attention 6 8 9 12.
  • Lin Bai — Traveling companion on the journey to Lingcheng, where Lu Xiu witnesses the arrangements for Lin Bai’s father’s transformation 12 14 15.
