Background / History
Meeting Saint Dio
Mumei’s elder-brother figure, Mima Karyotori, had saved her from a Kabane attack and taught her combat techniques. She regarded him as a gentle, formidable hero and spoke about him with open admiration 21.
After Saint Dio destroyed a vast Kabane horde, Mumei approached him aboard the Kotetsujō to ask about his strength. Unlike the passengers who revered him as a god, she showed curiosity rather than fear. Dio recognized her Kabaneri physiology as valuable and began considering her recruitment 17.
Stussy challenged Mumei’s confidence in her speed and demonstrated movement she could not match. Mumei immediately asked to learn it; Stussy subsequently began teaching her Soru 18 21.
Fall of Kongoukaku
Stussy questioned Mumei about Mima, then targeted him as a villain whose actions would increase the population’s reliance on Saint Dio. Mumei’s admiration for him made her an unwitting source of information for that plan 21.
Mima later persuaded Mumei to lower Kongoukaku’s drawbridge for a steam train. Trusting him, she complied, only to discover that the train carried Kabane. She seized a fallen samurai’s steam rifle and fought the invading creatures before leaving to confront him 23.
After Mima killed Munechika Shikishima, Mumei rescued Ayame from the hall and apologized for letting the attackers inside. Ayame believed that she had not acted knowingly. They separated to address the crisis, with Mumei taking responsibility for confronting Mima 24.
Mima initially anticipated her attacks because he had taught her techniques. Mumei surprised him with Soru and shot him in the back, but hesitated when he appealed to their bond. He exploited that hesitation and injected himself with black fluid, gaining crystalline armor that resisted her bullets. Unable to penetrate it, Mumei lured him into a gunpowder warehouse and shot out the floor beneath him, dropping him among the explosives before saying goodbye 24.
Traveling with Saint Dio
Mumei left her world aboard Saint Dio’s ship, enthusiastically exploring the ocean and enjoying the food provided aboard 25.
At Sabaody, she acquired new weapons and defended Dio against attacking pirates. She chose to cripple one attacker rather than execute him after he surrendered 28 29. Dio later gave her the Pocket-Pocket Fruit ring, establishing her role as an agile fighter able to carry and switch between a large arsenal 31.
On Fish-Man Island, she trained under Hancock and detected Hody Jones’s hostility, drawing Dio’s attention to him. She also received the Mark-Mark Fruit ring and tested its interaction with her storage ability against Marigold 35 39.
Wano Country
During the voyage from Fish-Man Island, Mumei befriended Shyarly and introduced her to the sun, clouds, and other sights above the sea 41.
After reaching Wano, Mumei accompanied Stussy into Ringo to find lodging. Her familiarity with kimono-style clothing helped them dress inconspicuously. While exploring town, she observed the Beasts Pirates searching for outsiders and reported their mention of King 42 43 44.
Mumei also defeated bandits who approached her at a ruined temple and took their carriage for the group’s use. Once the party settled in Ringo, Dio left her and the Boa sisters at a dojo to study Haki 44 45.
Appearance
- Build and features: Petite, with delicate features and large, clear eyes 17 23.
- Hair and eyes: Black hair and black eyes 24.
- Wano disguise: A pale pink kimono with a light yellow sash, with her hair tied into a ponytail using a red cord 43.
Personality
Mumei is candid, curious, and proud of her agility. She examines Saint Dio without the reverence others show him and confidently challenges Stussy before discovering the difference in their speed. Rather than becoming discouraged, she eagerly asks to learn Stussy’s technique 17 18.
Her trust in people she admires can leave her vulnerable. Mima’s request is enough to overcome her concern about opening Kongoukaku’s gate at night. After discovering the consequences, however, she acts immediately to fight the Kabane and later confronts him despite her emotional attachment 23 24.
She distinguishes between killing Kabane and killing people. At Sabaody, a pirate’s pleas make her unwilling to execute him, though she accepts permanently disabling him as a way to prevent further wrongdoing 29.
Outside combat, she enjoys sweets, unfamiliar sights, and companionship. She finds a natural playmate in Shyarly, whereas she regards the more combat-focused Boa sisters primarily as comrades 20 41 44.
Abilities & Skills
Kabaneri Physiology and Agility
Mumei’s mixed human and Kabane traits give her exceptional physical potential 17.
- Uses acrobatics, rapid reactions, and nimble footwork to evade attacks and reposition 18 29.
- Can fire accurately while moving through groups of Kabane 23.
- Saint Dio considers mobility and harassment better suited to her than direct frontline fighting 31.
Soru
Stussy teaches Mumei to generate high-speed movement through an instantaneous burst of force against the ground 21.
- Enables surprise attacks from an opponent’s blind spot 24.
- Helps her approach, mark, and disengage from a target 39.
- Her first successful combat use occurs before she has fully mastered the technique 24.
Pocket-Pocket Fruit
Mumei accesses this ability through a silver ring given to her by Saint Dio, rather than through a documented act of eating the fruit 31.
- Connects her pockets to a nearly limitless extradimensional storage space 31 39.
- Holds large weapon crates without visibly enlarging her pockets 31.
- Allows quick retrieval of weapons, tools, clothing, and accessories 31 43.
Mark-Mark Fruit
A second silver ring grants Mumei the ability to make thrown weapons pursue a marked living target 39.
- Activation: Requires direct contact between her palm and the target’s skin.
- Target limit: Only one mark can be maintained at a time; marking another target removes the previous mark.
- Guidance: Thrown weapons can curve around and approach from different directions.
- Damage limit: Tracking does not increase a weapon’s destructive power. Marigold blocks Mumei’s guided curved blades with Armament Haki and remains unharmed 39.
Observation Haki
Hancock teaches Mumei Haki fundamentals through blindfolded training 35.
- Detects intense hostility from Hody Jones within a group of guards 35.
- No broader mastery of Observation Haki or successful use of Armament Haki is documented.
Weapons and Fieldcraft
- Marksmanship: Precisely shoots a pirate’s Achilles tendon and limbs to incapacitate him 29.
- Improvised tactics: Uses a warehouse’s weakened floor and gunpowder stores against Mima’s bullet-resistant transformation 24.
- Disguise assistance: Dresses Stussy in a kimono and arranges her hair to resemble local Wano women 43.
- Basic observation: Picks up practical habits from traveling with Stussy, despite lacking professional intelligence training 44.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Steam rifle/gun: Her original firearm type; used against Kabane and Mima before Dio seeks better weapons for her 23 24 28.
- Flintlocks: Selected at Sabaody for their improved workmanship, range, and accuracy 29.
- Daggers and ammunition belts: Chosen alongside her firearms 29.
- Curved blades: Stored in her pocket space and used to test guided attacks against Marigold 39.
- Two silver Devil Fruit rings: Provide the Pocket-Pocket and Mark-Mark abilities 31 39.
- Kimonos and accessories: Keeps luggage from her original world in her storage space, including a white jade hairpin used for Stussy’s disguise 43.
Relationships
- Saint Dio — Recruiter, patron, and combat-role planner. Supplies her weapons and both ability rings; she comes to trust that his gifts will be useful 17 28 31 39.
- Stussy — Soru instructor and traveling companion. Mumei eagerly learns from her and later helps her blend into Wano; Stussy also uses Mumei’s account of Mima for her own plans 18 21 43.
- Mima Karyotori — Rescuer, former combat teacher, and cherished elder-brother figure. His betrayal turns him into her opponent during Kongoukaku’s fall 21 23 24.
- Ayame Yomogawa — An older-sister-like companion. Mumei rescues her, and Ayame rejects the idea that Mumei knowingly enabled the invasion 24.
- Boa Hancock — Comrade and Haki instructor; corrects Mumei sharply when she becomes distracted during training 35.
- Boa Sandersonia and Boa Marigold — Fellow combatants rather than close playmates. Marigold serves as the test opponent for Mumei’s combined ring abilities 39 41.
- Shyarly — Her first playmate of the same age. Their shared curiosity helps them bond, and Mumei takes an older-sister-like role when introducing her to the surface world 41.
