Background / History

Orphanage Childhood

Su Yu transmigrated at age five into the body of a young beggar who was subsequently taken into the Holy City Orphanage. He did not know his body’s parents or what Martial Soul he might inherit. His knowledge of the original story included Hu Liena and Xie Yue’s expected Martial Souls and talents 1.

The orphanage served as a talent-selection institution for Spirit Hall. Children with suitable Martial Souls and innate Soul Power could attend Spirit Hall Academy; those with poor prospects would eventually become servants after turning twelve. Determined to avoid that future, Su Yu secretly offered incense to numerous gods on the night before his awakening 1 2.

Awakening and Discipleship

His Martial Soul initially appeared to be an unimpressive sapling, leading the awakening deacon to dismiss it. The discovery of innate full Soul Power reversed that judgment and brought Su Yu before Bibi Dong. While waiting for the audience, he awakened the Invincible Shinobi World System and obtained its beginner rewards 4.

After demonstrating living wooden vines that could absorb Soul Power, Su Yu became Bibi Dong’s disciple alongside Hu Liena. Both moved into the Pope Hall and enrolled in Spirit Hall Academy’s Martial Soul Class to study theory under Xu Yan 6 8.

Before obtaining a Soul Ring, Su Yu defeated Zhang Hao by surviving his flames and draining his Soul Power. A month later, Bibi Dong personally escorted Su Yu and Hu Liena to obtain their First Soul Rings. Su Yu persuaded her to consider a thousand-year ring only after an examination confirmed his exceptional physique 9 10 12.

Qian Renxue’s Departure

Su Yu initially clashed with Qian Renxue while defending Hu Liena. After Bibi Dong stopped the fight and slapped Qian Renxue during their ensuing argument, Su Yu recognized the affection and resentment beneath the mother and daughter’s hostility 17 18.

He later comforted Qian Renxue, explaining that Bibi Dong’s painful past might account for her distance. Their conversations developed into a friendship centered on a secluded meeting place. Although he warned her against infiltrating the Heaven Dou Imperial Family, she remained determined to earn her mother’s approval. Su Yu promised to care for Little Gray and brought the animal to see her off 21 22 24 25 28.

Forest Training and Freshman Competition

Xiao Yi assigned Su Yu and Hu Liena five days of forest training, including the task of killing a Soul Beast at least eight hundred years old. They coordinated their restraints, charm, and close-range attacks against several beasts before defeating a thousand-year Golden-Eyed Tiger. Its third eye yielded an External Soul Bone, which Hu Liena agreed suited Su Yu better 30 31 33 35.

During the academy assessment, the pair shifted from hunting token-carrying beasts to taking Command Tokens from other teams. They finished with more than two hundred tokens. Su Yu subsequently defeated opponents including Zhang Hao and Tuoba Yu, then overcame Hu Liena in the final individual match to win the Freshman Competition 37 38 40 43 44.

Heaven Dou Mission

Three years after the competition, Su Yu had reached rank twenty-six. He traveled to Heaven Dou City with Yue Guan to recruit Dugu Bo, using his knowledge of the poison afflicting Dugu Bo’s family to open negotiations 44 45 47.

Su Yu offered treatment, a position in Spirit Hall, and academy schooling for Dugu Bo’s granddaughter. Dugu Bo agreed to let him select herbs from his garden if he cured the family. At the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, Su Yu identified Chaos Twin-Life Grass, a herb capable of evolving the two Martial Souls of a twin-Martial-Soul cultivator. His latest documented scene leaves its harvesting interrupted by Yue Guan’s request for the singular velvet sky chrysanthemum; neither the cure nor Dugu Bo’s recruitment is yet confirmed 47 48 49.

Appearance

Su Yu is introduced as a boy of approximately six or seven, with healthy wheat-colored skin and lively, clever-looking eyes 1.

  • Sharingan: His eyes display a single black tomoe when first acquired and two tomoe after his Second Soul Ring 7 43 44.
  • Brow mark: Absorbing the Golden-Eyed Tiger’s External Soul Bone leaves a pale golden mark between his brows 35.
  • Clothing: Wears clean, practical clothing at the academy and blue robes when seeing Qian Renxue off 8 28.

Personality

Su Yu is mischievous and enjoys provoking familiar people. He repeatedly teases Hu Liena, hides behind her to aggravate Xie Yue, and needles Qian Renxue about her defensive manner. His humor can also be opportunistic: he gets Hu Liena to massage his shoulders before explaining the value of External Soul Bones 1 20 21 34.

His ambition is rooted in a refusal to accept a powerless future. He eagerly embraces the system’s rewards and firmly argues for a stronger First Soul Ring, but supports his claims by asking Bibi Dong to examine his body. Bibi Dong also praises him for defeating Zhang Hao without becoming arrogant or complacent 1 4 10 12.

Beneath his teasing, he is attentive to other people’s distress. He notices Bibi Dong’s discomfort around men, recognizes Qian Renxue’s longing for maternal affection, and offers reassurance without celebrating her conflict with his teacher 11 18 21 24.

In dangerous situations, he favors preparation and leverage over panic. He avoids fighting beside a river where noise might attract beasts, exploits the assessment’s permissive rules, and remains composed when Dugu Bo threatens him 30 37 47.

Abilities & Skills

Wood Release

Su Yu’s elemental Martial Soul generates and controls wood. Its living vines continuously absorb a restrained opponent’s Soul Power to strengthen themselves 6 8.

  • Soul Power drainage: Can exhaust opponents without requiring a conventional Soul Skill, as demonstrated against Zhang Hao 10.
  • Regeneration: Severed or damaged vines sprout new growth, allowing persistent restraints and broad arena coverage 40 41.
  • Resilience: His wooden defenses withstand Zhang Hao’s flames and Xie Yue’s Moon Blade attacks 9 40.
  • Environmental sensing: Detects unusual movements in surrounding plants to help locate Soul Beasts 37.
  • Limits: Stronger opponents can break his constructs; Bibi Dong breaks his vines with a surge of power, and Qian Renxue escapes them using Angel’s Blessing 6 17.

Demonstrated Techniques

Technique Application
Great Forest Technique Produces rapidly extending vines from his arm for binding targets and draining Soul Power 6 8.
Wood Locking Wall Raises wooden pillars that bend into an enclosing defensive wall 9 40.
Cutting Technique Fires wooden spikes that grow after impact, causing extensive internal damage 12 15 33.
Four-Pillar Prison Erupts large timbers from the ground to immobilize a charging target 31.
Uchihagaeshi Weaves thick vines into a shield capable of intercepting Xie Yue’s Moon Blade 40.
Thorn Killing Technique Uses thorned vines or wooden strips to bind opponents, including through gaps in Tuoba Yu’s scales 39 42 43.

Basic Sage Body

A growable physique enhancement obtained from the system’s beginner gift pack 4.

  • Combined with medicinal baths and training, raises his physical fitness to a level comparable to a Soul Elder’s while he is still rank ten 10 12.
  • Enables him to withstand a thousand-year First Soul Ring 12 15.
  • The system states that absorbing a certain number of Soul Rings will further evolve it; no later Sage Body evolution is explicitly documented 6.

Sharingan

A growable ocular ability whose evolution is linked to the number of Soul Rings Su Yu absorbs, rather than a requirement to suffer personal loss 6.

  • One-tomoe application: Repels Hu Liena’s Demon Fox Charm and traps her in an illusion 43.
  • Two-tomoe evolution: Occurs after he absorbs his Second Soul Ring 44.
  • Future threshold: The system estimates that Mangekyo Sharingan requires at least Soul Emperor cultivation; Su Yu has not reached that stage in the documented chapters 6 44.

Mind’s Eye of the Kagura

A sensory technique awarded after a system mission 25.

  • Initially detects movement and activity within five hundred meters 25.
  • Has a stated maximum range of ten li 25.
  • Distinguishes Soul Beast movement, vegetation, and even insects beneath the soil; Su Yu uses it to scout routes and locate shelter 30.

Tiger Flame Demon Light

An offensive Soul Skill granted by the Golden-Eyed Tiger’s eye-type External Soul Bone, rather than by a Soul Ring 35.

  • Fires a concentrated golden energy beam from between his brows 36.
  • Remains in contact with Bibi Dong’s defensive barrier for several breaths but fails to penetrate it 36.
  • Bibi Dong expects its performance to improve with greater Soul Power and proficiency 36.
  • The External Soul Bone itself has growth potential, a property Su Yu explains before absorbing it 34 35.

System Knowledge and Restrictions

The Invincible Shinobi World System supplies rewards, technique memories, and information about how his abilities interact with Soul Rings 4 6 25.

  • Soul Rings: Improve Soul Power quality rather than grant him conventional Soul Skills; his First Soul Ring also strengthens Wood Release 6 15.
  • Permitted ninjutsu: Wood Release, earth-attribute, water-attribute, and neutral-attribute techniques 6.
  • Knowledge is not mastery: The compendium includes advanced techniques such as Wood Clone, Wood Dragon, and Wood Human. His documented attempt to form a Wood Clone remains incomplete 4 19.

Combat Instruction and Specialized Knowledge

Su Yu supplements his supernatural abilities with tactical judgment and knowledge of the world’s resources 30 34 47 49.

  • Teaches Hu Liena close-combat techniques that she later uses against him 43.
  • Coordinates his restraints and piercing attacks with her Demon Fox Charm 31 32.
  • Explains External Soul Bone growth and the relationship between a bone’s abilities and its originating beast 34.
  • Identifies Dugu Bo’s hereditary poison backlash, describes its symptoms, and outlines two treatment approaches; successful treatment is not yet shown 47.
  • Recognizes Chaos Twin-Life Grass and its strict suitability for cultivators with Twin Martial Souls 49.

Relationships

  • Hu Liena — Childhood friend, fellow disciple, and regular training partner. Affectionately calls him “Brother Su Yu,” defends him from Xie Yue, and willingly yields the offensive External Soul Bone to him 1 31 35.
  • Xie Yue — Childhood acquaintance and teasing rival. His protectiveness toward Hu Liena repeatedly puts him at odds with Su Yu, culminating in an eagerly anticipated academy match 1 40.
  • Qian Renxue — Initially an opponent, later a friend and confidante. Su Yu comforts her over Bibi Dong’s rejection and warns her about the danger of the Heaven Dou infiltration mission 17 21 24 25.
  • Little Gray — Qian Renxue’s companion. Su Yu promises to feed and care for it during her absence and brings it to her farewell 25 28.
  • Yue Guan — Senior escort and ally, addressed by Su Yu as “Uncle Chrysanthemum.” Accompanies him to negotiate with Dugu Bo and later asks him for the singular velvet sky chrysanthemum 45 46 49.
  • Xiao Yi — Forest-training supervisor. Observes Su Yu and Hu Liena from concealment and approves of their composure and adaptability 30 31.
  • Dugu Bo — Prospective recruit and conditional partner. Offers access to his herb garden in exchange for curing his family’s poison 47.
