Still, after thinking it over, Yu Ziyu felt he had gained quite a lot this time.
After all, he had planted a useful pawn deep within humanity.
At that thought, Yu Ziyu called softly, "Qing'er, how are things on your end?"
"Uh..."
After a moment of silence, the white figure leaning against the tree pouted and complained, "I got into a vehicle, and I've been bouncing around ever since."
As she spoke, Qing'er added unhappily, "Master, do I really have to keep controlling this body?"
"Yes, you do."
Yu Ziyu chuckled, his voice brimming with satisfaction.
Even he had not expected the girl named He Ling'er to awaken an elemental talent through a twist of fate, much less catch the eye of the group's leader, Yan Gaoyuan, who had specifically requested that she be sent to that mysterious department.
And what did that mean?
All he needed to do was put his heart into nurturing Qing'er, and an excellent pawn would emerge.
When the time came, he would be able to learn about all sorts of developments among humans immediately through Qing'er.
Moreover, he had already confirmed it with Qing'er.
As she was now, Qing'er could control that body for over ten hours.
When Qing'er was not controlling it, the body would fall asleep.
This would form a cycle, allowing "Ling'er's" body to maintain a normal routine like anyone else.
Looking at the somewhat reluctant Qing'er, Yu Ziyu could understand how she felt.
Controlling it like this was probably quite a burden for Qing'er.
With that in mind, Yu Ziyu smiled and said, "Qing'er, as a reward, I'll give you some life essence regularly."
"Really?"
Qing'er's eyes widened, and she suddenly squealed.
"I keep my word."
"Yay, yay, yay... Thank you, Master! Thank you, Master!"
Dancing with joy, Qing'er, dressed in a white dress, wore a heartfelt smile.
Life essence was a treasure of great importance to her.
It could accelerate her evolution while nourishing her soul... One could say that this treasure held an extraordinary appeal for her.
While Qing'er was dancing with joy, aboard an armored vehicle traveling along a muddy road, the mouths of the two fully armed special forces soldiers in the back seat twitched hard as they watched the little girl suddenly fall asleep again.
"Could this little girl Ling'er have narcolepsy? Why does she sleep all day long?"
"Sleeping is fine. The problem is that she always falls asleep suddenly, without any warning."
"Uh..."
In a rare moment of silence, both special forces soldiers looked utterly helpless.
But a moment later, as though something had occurred to them, they exchanged a glance and saw amusement deep in each other's eyes.
It really had been a long time since they had seen such an innocent little girl.
Besides, according to Boss Yan, this little girl was extraordinarily gifted. Unless something unexpected happened, that gathering place for geniuses would have another "monster."
"I've already thought of her future title."
With nothing else to do, one of the special forces soldiers suddenly joked.
"What?"
"Sleepy Girl..."
"Uh... Sleepy Girl is a bit much, isn't it? I think Yanfei would be better. That name sounds nice."
"Yanfei? That name has something to it. Say, buddy, you really do like Ling'er, don't you?"
With a chuckle, the special forces soldier said nothing more, though the faint flicker in his eyes seemed to be saying something.
That night, moisture hung in the air.
Several hours had already passed since the humans' departure.
Just then, as though sensing something, Yu Ziyu suddenly raised his eyes.
Through the thick fog, four enormous green wolves limped toward him.
Blood was still seeping from wounds of varying sizes, making them look particularly gruesome.
The Wind Wolf leading them held something resembling prey in its mouth.
On closer inspection, it was actually a honey badger several sizes larger than normal.
At the moment, however, this honey badger was in a terrible state.
Wounds covered its body, and some of its vital areas even had fist-sized holes.
Even more alarming was its abdomen, which looked as though something had pierced straight through it, leaving it bleeding nonstop.
"Growl..."
Whimpering softly, the honey badger still tried to struggle, its eyes fixed on the direction it had come from.
"Thank you all for your hard work this time."
Sighing inwardly, Yu Ziyu found the sight somewhat hard to bear.
The Wind Wolves were all right. Faced with human bullets, they had suffered only minor injuries at most.
But the honey badger he had tricked had fought a truly brutal battle with the man named Yan Gaoyuan.
Especially at the end, when a human shell had hit it head-on, leaving it barely alive.
Yet even in this state, the honey badger, blinded by hatred, had refused to leave, its scarlet eyes filled with madness.
Had the highly intelligent Wind Wolf not used the thick fog as cover, seized it in its jaws, and decisively withdrawn from the battlefield,
this honey badger would most likely have died fighting.
"Ah."
With a sigh, Yu Ziyu slowly extended his countless branches.
Then, the countless branches wove themselves into an enormous hand and took the honey badger from the Wind Wolf's mouth, as though cradling it in his arms.
"Growl, growl, growl..."
Lifting its head, the honey badger looked toward Yu Ziyu's branches and growled incessantly, its body struggling without pause.
But its severe injuries made every growl sound like a mournful cry, each more sorrowful than the last.
"Don't move."
Sending a message through his branches, Yu Ziyu bound the honey badger in layer upon layer of branches, regardless of whether it could understand him.
Then, one by one, his branches slipped into the honey badger's wounds like nimble tentacles.
Whimpering softly, the honey badger continued to roar.
But a moment later, as intense pain struck, its entire body began trembling.
Just bear with it.
With that inward whisper, Yu Ziyu used his branches to extract shell fragments from the honey badger's body.
The shell fragments were all drenched in blood, and some were even lodged in the honey badger's bones.
If they were not removed, the honey badger's wounds would probably struggle to heal completely.
And this was only because the honey badger had become a Mutated Beast.
An ordinary beast would have died long ago.
